Development of the Narrative

Upon starting to edit the footage we had collected from our first shoot we realised that our idea for the narrative of the music video was not a big enough idea to cover the whole song.

To fix this issue we came up with the idea that an army man would come into the room of our actor. At this point our lead actor would realise that this is his chance to escape where he is being held captive and has a fight with the army man.

This fight then ultimately ends up with the army man on the floor and our lead actor fleeing the room. We then plan on filming his running for his escape using POV shots to display his state of panic.

Ending the whole video with him leaving the building and leaving the audience with wondering where he is going to go and how he originally managed to end up being held captive in the first place.

We feel that adding this extension to our narrative will give our music video far more enigma and will make the audience want to watch it again which is the aim of the music video.

Draft 1 – Feedback and Targets

Although very shot we are impressed with the speed of edit that we have managed to achieve for the first draft. We collected some peers feedback so that we can develop on the ideas that we have come up with and compile more footage to create a longer sequence for draft 2.

One of the main points that stood out in out feedback it the clothing in which our actor is wearing in the performance section. He is wearing a hooded Adidas jumper with a very bit logo. The large logo takes away from the performance and makes the video look more like an advert than a music video. To remove the brand awareness from our music video we have decided to rethink our artist’s mise-en-scene and will re-film this whole section so that this issue does not continue on into any further drafts.

Targets:

  • Get rid of brand awareness
  • Make it longer
  • Include more variation of shots

Please take a look at some of the other feedback that we received for this draft below.

Shoot Evaluation – Performance

Evaluation of Performance shoot + targets +photos of shoot

Our first performance shoot went very well but we did not get enough close-ups on the shoot. However, we have also discovered that we in this shoot we have made a big mistake in mise-en-scene. So although we have managed to create and collect some good footage our performer should not be wearing a branded jumper.

Furthermore, I would have liked to capture a more aggressive performance as it suits the song and genre better. On the other hand, I am very pleased with how we managed to frame all of our shots. Next time I intend to collect more variations of shots that could be useful to our performance. For example, filming a long distance and close up of the same shot will be good for our music video as it means that we will be able to edit in jump cuts which create a un-nerving feel and a more aggressive performance.

Targets:

  • To film close-ups and long shots of the same shot so that I can edit in jump cuts later on.
  • Do more close-ups of the performer. For example, footage of him just lip syncing into the camera using an extreme close up of just his mouth.
  • Take some POV shots of out performer kicking things around. Shows his anger from his point of view which in turn makes him more relatable to the audience.
  • Take more shots that show off  the setting and the mise-en-scene of the area. For example frame to make the space look bigger but also isolated.
  • Make sure not to include brand logos.

Below is a few different images of how us filming our performance shots at the box bunker.

Music Video – Production Meeting Agenda – Performance

Below is our production meeting agenda for the performance section of our music video. It includes what we need to bring along with us and who is responsible for it. For example, I am responsible for the lighting of the location.

Moreover, it also includes the mise-en-scene for what our actor is going to wear to achieve the star look that we desire for our artist.

Lastly and possibly most importantly it states where we are filming and what time to insure that everyone is at the correct location at the correct time.

Music Video – Shot List – Performance

I decided that it would be a good idea to go through music videos that are of my genre to pick out shots that I found effective. By doing this I have now generated ideas for what shot I can use when filming my own music video to make it interesting but still fit the common conventions of my genre.

I like the idea of projecting light onto my stars face/body in patterns as I feel that it adds a texture to the shot and gives the artist a sense of enigma because of all the dark areas and shadows that the light creates.

Music Video – Risk Assessment

This post includes two risk assessment document that I have filled out for the shoots that we are going to do. By doing a risk assessment sheet I am insuring that everything we are going to film is thought through and the safety precautions needed can be taken which allows for a more efficient filming day.

Music Video Planning – Narrative/ Performance Timeline

Below you will see a timeline for my chosen song ‘Gibberish by MAX’.

This timeline includes both the narrative and performance that I intend to use in my music video. By doing this I am giving myself set goals for the video and allowing myself to create detailed shot lists and storyboards for each of my shoots.

For the layout of the narrative for the video I have decided that the first 2 thirds of the video are going to be in a single room where he is in isolation to show the audience his mental state. This will allow the audience to gain some form of connection with our performer before the disruption happens. Roughly 2 thirds of the way into the video a guard will enter his room and a fight will happen. At this point the audience will notice that he did not want to be where he was and is not escaping. A broken up montage will then be shown to document his escape with the ending being him finally leaving the isolated building.

Performance wise, the shoot will be done inside an outdoor bunker that is box like. This keeps with the theme of the performer being held in small isolated places. His performance in this location will be far more aggressive and the 4th wall will be broken between him and the audience.

Music Video – Permission from Artist

For copyright reasons it was important as part of this process I requested permission to make a music video for the song that I have selected. To do this I searched the artist of the song and went onto his website and looked any form of contact information. I have now emailed his personal agent. A copy of the email is below.

Music Video – Star Image Planning

Music videos are made to promote the the star of the song to increase revenue on the artists songs.

MAX has created a star image for himself that is both extraordinary and ordinary. To make him have a star factor he is shown in videos being the main man. Everything revolves around him. He has a large stage presence that that is powerful and exciting. He achieves this with his extraordinary rugged look that he he uses on stage and in music videos.

He predominantly dresses in black attire. This suits his style and makes him seem more important as he stands out around people in ‘normal’ attire.

However, to make himself have a sense of relatability to him he also posted images of himself doing everyday things.

I have created a pinterest page that is linked in the image below that shows MAX’s star image. It shows both his extravagant and average side to his lifestyle.
