Music Video Draft 4

Our Music Video Draft 4:

This was the final draft of our music video, we attempted to follow the feedback we were given by our peers. We removed the tear effect as we only had enough time to add one of these and it was out of place with just this one random effect in there. We also added the fade out as the video was ending and we had to add a fictional name for our star as we obviously couldn’t use the original artists name.

Teacher Feedback – Screencastify

Targets for improvement:

  • Don’t include unnecessary shots of the star in the middle of the narrative.
  • Try to include more of the ring and show close ups of it.
  • Try not to draw on shots and make quick cuts on the beat of the song.
  • Incorporate shade into our performance and see how this can emphasise our star.

Shoot 2 Reflection

My Shoot 2 Reflection:

In our second shoot we shot the narrative part of our video and we shot the scenes for the performance where our star was wearing gloves, had money and had a bat.

A difficulty we encountered in filming the narrative was when we were near the edge, where we filmed there was a small drop (around 1 meter) on the left side of the screenshot above. The drop itself wasn’t the problem as there was railings up but the problem was that there was modern cars on the road where the drop is. Which obviously we couldn’t show in our video as it wouldn’t set our class gangster theme if we had a Fiat 500 in the background. Other than this I feel the shoot did well and we didn’t encounter any other problems and overall is was very happy with how the narrative shoot turned out.

We also filmed a bit more for our performance in the black room at school, when we filmed with the bat we had to be supervised in the studio which did make me feel a bit rushed for time although I’m still happy with the shots we got and think they came out well. Using the props, in my opinion, went very well. We got a nice variation of shots with the bat and the fake money. In this shoot we also got some shots of our star with gloves on and some shots of him putting on the shots, these were my favourite shots from our shoot as I feel like they really give that anarchic gangster message that we needed to incorporate into our music video.

Music Video Draft 3

Our 3rd Draft of our Music video:

Targets for improvement:

  • Need to put more of our footage in and spend less time on what we already have.
  • Try to play with the speed a bit, (eg speeding up and slowing down certain shots.)
  • Add some close ups that better show emotion.

Things we are doing well:

  • Pitch black background is very effective with the use of the spotlight.
  • The part where the narrative and performance are faded is good.

Specsavers Feedback

During one of our lessons we had two professional editors come in to give us feedback and tips on our editing.

Lenny taught us all about adjustment layers, these are like effects you can make but instead of having it on a single clip you can drag across your timeline and apply the effect to everything. For example, we are doing our music video in black and white and in our draft 1 we were individually applying the black and white effects to each clip. But now we apply the effect to the adjustment layer, just once, then we can stretch this out  and it will apply to every clip. This is a massive time saver.

Lenny also taught us how to use solids and keyframes, in our music video we use effects to make the backgrounds around our star darker because in the original clip there was a bit of light that we didn’t want. And from this, Lenny showed us how to make a black solid to just cover up the light we didn’t like but this also led to him showing us how we can mask these solids around our star to give off a spotlight kind of effect. Then with keyframes you can move these solids at certain times. For example, if your star is moving around in a clip but you still want to use one of these effects and want it to track on him, you can use these keyframes to individually move around the star at specific times, this led to me and Tyler finding a setting that will do this for you and make loads of keyframes at once so the transition is very smooth.
