Social Media page Draft 1 self assessment

Below is our first draft of our social media page:

Please click to view the page.

My teacher provided me with some helpful feedback and from this I have been able to construct a list of improvements we should consider making:

  • Add in some reviews eg. on her album or latest appearance
  • Introduce her in the about section of the page
  • Respond to the comments
  • Insert the link to her merch site
  • Dedicate a post to the whole music video
  • Add in an endorsement/collaboration with a brand
  • Comment on the #blackouttuesday post to really home in on her integrity and passion for politics and current debates

My self assessment:

  • Design coherence: I feel that our social media page is coherent with the other media products created for our star. We included the generic colour scheme of neon colours found in our digipak and music video, as evidenced by our cover and profile images.
  • Content: The content of our social media is quite successful at keeping our audience interested so far. We have included a teaser for example, from our music video. However this could be improved upon by adding the full video later on in our posts to ensure our audience are satisfied with an end result.
  • Synergy: We have used synergy in one post so far, as we highlighted a a collaboration coming soon with an artist called Fabrice. We used the caption, “Something big is coming soon…” in order to entice intrigue our audience and create a buzz. We could however add in an endorsement with a popular brand that would appeal to our target audience.
  • Timeline: We have attempted to build excitement throughout our page through the likes of the teaser post for our music video. We do however need to add in our full, finished video in order to satisfy our audience and perhaps could add in a teaser for her debut album much earlier in the page.
  • Cross media convergence: One of our posts so far, has referred to an appearance on Capital FM radio. This is great for her image as it markets her to a wider and larger audience.
  • Promotion of live events: We included a promotion of a Facebook live concert, in order to be politically relevant to the time. We felt this was relevant due to Covid-19 and many artists having to cancel tours and subsequently holding online live concerts.
  • A call to action: There are clear links to points of sale throughout our Facebook page. For example, there is a link to Spotify to stream her debut album and there will soon be a link to her merchandise website where our target audience can buy their merch.
  • Ordinary/extraordinary: Our star’s image fulfils both of these aspects to Dyer’s theory. For example, there is a video post on our page  in which our star announces her stay at home livestream concert. Our star is presented to be very ordinary as she is seen with natural hair and minimal makeup, highlighting that she is similar and relatable to her fans. However, she also appears to be extraordinary as she is discussing her musical talent and success through her cancelled tour and subsequent livestream concert.
  • Interaction/engagement: This is one area we need to improve on. Although she is successful through this video, where she speaks directly to her fanbase, we could perhaps reply to some of her fans comments in order to ensure successful audience engagement.
  • Sell physical copies: Artists don’t make much money from streamed listens, so it is important to link in promotion of physical copies of their music. This is definitely something to consider for our page as currently we only have a link to Spotify to stream her debut album.
  • Issues and charities: We have included one post so far, that expresses our star’s view on currents issues. This was the #blackouttuesday post which refers to the BLM movement. This is successful at representing out star as compassionate and engaged. We could however improve on this by adding a link to a mental health charity as our star’s music video links to this and will further symbolise our star’s integrity.

Timeline and Marketing ideas

As a group, we constructed a plan for our social media page in the form of a timeline. This enabled us to order our posts in order to make the best marketing campaign we could and keep our audience guessing. We have included different types of posts such as introducing merchandisea live stream concert, and teaser for the latest music video.

Below is our timeline.

We aim to take inspiration from other successful marketing campaigns in the music industry such as Lewis Capaldi’s. He was successful as in the lead up to his debut album, he partook in many collaborations where his audience were able to engage with his personality. This was very successful so I aim to take inspiration from this in the form of a Vogue inspired question and answer video or a Google search fill in the blanks video.

Social Media Page Terminology

In order to prepare for constructing my own social media page for my artist I have researched Billie Eilish’s Facebook page. Her music and style is similar to our artist, Au/Ra.

Through this task,  I have learnt about the technical conventions of a social media page which will help me to create a conventional Facebook page. I will need to consider the marketing campaign for my artists page, in order to best promote her and her music and achieve our preferred reading from our target audience.
