Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

Music Video Draft 1 - Rough Cut

Above is the first draft of our music video. As this is are first draft the clip is only 1 minute long and the transitions and cuts between clips are not very good. However theses cuts and transitions can be improved in are future drafts. I am pretty happy with performance side of the video only a few things need syncing. However the the narrative is the big let down. Of course not all the clips are in it so the narrative but it is difficult to understand. The shots are all too long too so this is something else to think about for the next draft.  As a group we got on well with the software for the editing on premier pro  and got the hand of it quickly. The more we edited the better we got with the editing techniques and how it works.

Our targets for the shoots was too try and convey the meanings of the song through the narrative, showing how this boy is getting treated really badly by a girl but he still loves her and keeps going back to her. We were able to do this by using things like Mise En Scene with using props, make up, costume and lighting also using camera techniques. I feel like from the shoots we were able to achieve this to a certain degree and hopefully the audience understand what we are trying to show.

Targets to improve on for the next draft…
  • We need to sort out the narrative side of the video
  • Don’t have as long clips for the narrative
  • work on better transitions between the band and the performance
  • get a wider variety of angles and distances to show the story better
  • show all aspects of the band playing together and also separately
Conclusion

Our group now knows what to do in order for the next draft to be successful and we have set targets so we can reach them and stay on track. I am happy with what we have done for are first draft, however they is still lots of work to be done. As long as the group all inputs into the work we should be good for the next draft.

Changes since uploading.

Since uploading the first draft of our music video,Youtube decide to take down all student accounts and content. This meant that we lost the first draft of our music video.

Shoot 1 Reflection

Shoot 1 Reflection - performance

This shot shows some of the great shadows we captured in the bunker with the lighting.

A mid distance shot of the band.

A slightly closer shot of the band playing.

From doing our first shoot I am really happy with how it went. As a group we all worked really together and got some great shots for the performance side of the video. The bunker we went to was a great place to do the shoot and the lightning we used gave off some great shadows and reflections on the band.

Some things that went well were …
  • We got lots of great shots of Ollie and Toby playing the instruments
  • The lighting we used was great and gave off some great reflections and shadows which conveyed the meaning of trapped and gave the area some real gloom and darkness to it
  • The location of the shoot was really cool and think will look really good in the video
  • We got a wide variety of distances of the band really showing the performance and everyone playing they instruments well.
  • The costumes of the band were great and linked in well with the genre this adds that extra Mes En Scene for the audience to notice in the video.
Some things that didn’t go to plan were….
  • We could have got a few more shots of me singing the lyrics because we didn’t get as many as we wanted.
  • We could have got a few more transitions and angles to help us transition between scenes
  • We didn’t have many props in the clips which wouldn’t convoy the genre well.
  • In a few shoots the band could have a bit more effort and feelings when playing. This would just give that extra boost extra in the video that we mean what the lyrics are saying and would make the performance.

From doing this shoot I am happy with the out come and hopefully the rest of the group is. I feel like we have enough shots to fill up the performance side of the video and don’t need to do anymore shoots for it. Now we just need to focus working towards the narrative side of the video and the layout we are going to have for that. From this shoot we have represented the star image well in the way we were planning on doing it before. However I feel like we will definitely need a lot more of the star image in the narrative side that is a lot more important to represent it .

Production Meeting for Shoot 1 (Performance)

Production Meeting for Shoot 1 (Performance)

Above is a production meeting document…

This is a really important planning document that our group needs for our first shoot. We as a group now know exactly what everyone needs and and what everyone is doing a at certain time. Without this information being written down we would have no organisation as a group and thinks could easily go wrong. These skills are are useful to have and will help me with planning other things in the future.

Risk Assessment for shoot 1

Risk Assessment for shoot 1

Below is the risk assessment for our first shoot of are music video

I think that it is important that our group does this risk assessment for the first shoot. This because we as a group know what risk might come up when filming and also how to prevent any accidents from happening and preventing them. Without filling in this risk assessment are group would not have been able to film in the cool location that we went to. The use of filming here also means it will make the music video look very cool.

Star Image – The Performer

Star Image - The Performer

The Star image for every band or performer is very important to promote to attract the target audience to listen to them.  Our task was to create a mood board about are start image and find out how they promote them selfs to the media. The Mood board we created is shown below….

From doing this task we have found out about the bands Metanarrative and gives us a better understanding of how they show them selfs to the media and a group. This work has helped our group of what to think about how we want to represent are star image of the band. I think that we should have the band as angry and rebellious. This is because of the song we are using  and how it is about a girl who isn’t very nice and manipulates a guy into doing things and she plays around we him. The reaction of this would be angry. We will achieve this in are music video by showing emotions through the band, facial expressions, the props that we use and how the band looks rebellious in terms of costume. To archive this well we will have to think about Richard Dyer’s Paradox theory about how stars are represented.

The photo above is evidence showing that we have asked the band of our song Catfish and the Bottlemen to use their song in our own music video. This is important to do as we don’t want copyright problem’s when publishing are final video, especially after putting in lots of hard work. We also as a group want to respect the artist  and not to take any credit for the video.

Test shoots

Test shoots

Before we start to shoot are music video we have to get a good understanding of the song and equipment that we are goin to use. Our groups task was too film a short 15- 20 second clip of the song and try and lip sync over it. While doing this we also had to try and practice getting  variety of shots, angles and transitions to get a preview for what we could use in the future for the main thing. Below is are final lip sync video….

What we did well ….

  1. We used a good variety of shots and angles through the clip.
  2. As a group we worked really well to prepare and come up with ideas for the lip sync.
  3. I like how we had quick change in shot to go with the beat of the song at the start.

What we could improve on….

  1. Try to get the music more synced with the performer.
  2. Maybe make the video closer to 20 seconds long.
  3. We could have used a better use of MES such as location and costume to show the genre better.
  4. I would have liked if we could have put some high or low angles in at some point to mix it up.

This task has been useful for me and the rest of the group it was task which was very trial and error and learn from the errors. I think it has been good to try to use the filming equipment and software to try and lip sync the song which will been very handy for the final video. I also leant a key feature  for this sort of task to edit to the beat of the song so it looks more professional and a quality video. I also now know what what type of shot or angles could work with the song to show the band and star image in an extraordinary way.

Pitch + Feedback

Pitch + Feedback

Below is our final pitch that we presented to are teacher for our music video.  From our are initial pitch we as a group thought about the decisions that we made and worked together to have the best ideas and improve it for the second draft of the pitch.

Below is the meeting we had with our teacher presenting the ideas we had come up with.

Some positive things that came from this meeting were …

  • We have a strong idea of the performance side of the shoot
  • We know who we are going to have in our band for the performance and who have a music background.
  • The location of were we are going to have our shoot is going to be good for the video
  • Able to understand the themes and ideas we have to work with for our music video.

Some things we need to think about and change before our shoot is ….

  • We need to focus more on the Mise En Scene of are performance – This will give the audience a better understanding of what genre we are try to focus on.
  • To work out what the outline of are narrative is going to be – So we can try a create a story around it and link it in with the song.
  • Think if the performance and narrative of the song are going to link with each other – Many music videos have both performance and narrative aspects to them – The impact of this is it effects the audiences reactions and the feelings to the video.
  • What costumes we are going to use to link with the genre of the song to attract our target audience – If the costumes don’t go well with the genre it will confuse the audience.
  • Who is going to do what when it comes to the time of filming in terms of actors and recording the song – we want are video to be at the best standard so in order for that to happen we need every one to work together if this doesn’t happen this will impact the final cut of the video.

From have this meeting with are teacher we as a group have worked out more what is going to work for us and what we need to change. This was a good way of getting some constructive feedback to the whole group. We can now think more about what needs changing and get on with them working towards the targets and the end goal of shooting the video. I am looking forward to what the next few weeks work brings to our group and how we can tackle the challenges that face us. I feel like our group is working well and will be a key part having a successful  video.

Visual Shot List for Shoot 1 (Performance)

Visual Shot List for Shoot 1 (Performance)

We used Padlet to collect some ideas and camera techniques to get an understanding of are genre for are music video.  This information is see below….

Made with Padlet

I think it was important to do this task because it gave us as a group information on how other bands with our genre film and create they music videos. How they use certain camera angles, frames and shots.  For example for our genre of indie rock they is a repertoire of elements for this genre with a typical band playing together and wearing the same sort of clothes like other bands do bands. I also found out how it is important that bands use cinematography in the videos to promote their star image.

Perfect Production Group

Perfect Production Group

As a group we have created and filled out this production group form showing some of the skills and planning we are going to produce and use. We used it to help us organise and think about the commitments we would need to have starting this music video. Below is the production form…

From filling out this production document we as a group we now know what we have to do to be successful when doing the music video and the commitment that everyone need to put in. It has also shown the groups skills and how we can use them to our advantage in the future. We now also have a rough plan for the production of the video and and some of the roles and responsibilities the group has. I think that from doing this task I have better understanding of the things we new to plan for the future as a group, how important it will be to communicate with the rest of them and if we get stuck we can do back to this form for help.
