DRAFT OF FRONT PAGE AND SELF ASSESSMENT

How well is the masthead proportioned and how unique is it?

In my opinion, the masthead I choose goes adequately well with both the front covers design and is highly advertising to the audience that I have chosen. Furthermore, I think that my choice in designing my chosen masthead is highly unique and is very recognizable to readers who would be looking for it in a row, as well as to other people looking for something interesting.

Describe how the cover models are framed well and are they large enough to take centre stage?

In my magazine, the model is in the centre of the front cover looking off to the side midway through a natural movement. This shows a sense of humanity they are dressed in anything flamboyant clothes, they are normal clothes in a genre that would be easy to advertise to the may audience, as it shows relate-ability like a mirror of the audience as if they are in a conversation not judge in envy over a fake unnatural dress.

How has DTP been used to integrate text and images?

In my design, I used Indesign to make my front page stand out more using techniques to layout my magazine’s front cover. Such as using different fonts and colour to signify to the reader which of the cover line are the most important/ are related to the model on the cover.

In what ways does the colour pallet reflect the genre?

The Black, reds and whites in the colour pallet communicate excellently to the audience the mood of the genre and the mood of the person on the magazine’s emotions which link to the choice of vocab in the main cover line.

How far does the font choice covey the genre?

Most of the front is emboldened to make them stand out whilst others are more of a son-serif to make the writing stand out against others in on the magazines other heading showing which ones are to stand out more to the audience all of these are used effectively.

How are does mise en scene communicate the star image and genre?

The costume communicates back the genre of alternative/emo rap. it is bold by the dark with a small amount colour on the top to add some depth to the clothes, this also links the red of the masthead and cover lines. The body language is natural and regular, something you know see anywhere. like the genre, it does focus on materialist items so the posture should be aggressive or overly emotional. the makeup is also natural and minor.

What language is used in the cover line and is it appropriate to the target audience?

In terms of language, the cover line is good which attracts the reader and adds a sense of importance to the magazine and in contents. It also includes a quote from the source which convey a sense of personal account, as though she will be confiding the reader on a personal level is a good use of linguistic structure.

What conventional technical element associated with a magazine cover are present?

I think the magazine is clearly a magazine as it has all the conventional features like a masthead, price, barcode, main cover star main and cover lines. all other these combined together are used to entice the reader to pick up the magazine.

How has the use of photoshop helped communicate the star image and genre?

Photoshop was used well to make thing such as her eyes and lips stand out more, using the dodge and burn tool. As well as cut out the model from the original background to make her easier to put over a solid colour making the magazine look more professional.

Five targets to make my Magazine cover better:

  •  Add pugs to fill up the empty spaces.
  •  Promote the magazine more such as giveaways and events made by RipTide.
  • Photoshop her eyes to make them stand out more because currently, they look flat, with no depth.
  • Colour grade the pink dragon on her top to match the color pallet, make it bolder/more of a statement.
  • Make Masthead bigger.

My Audience Profile and Research

When creating my magazine I think is highly important to understand the demographic of my audience and of some of the artist I could feature in the magazine. These key points include age, gender, culture, and generation. below I have attached some demographic on the certain artist (Juice Wrld and MGK) within the genre, I can use these to make a great denotation to my target audience.

For these statistics, I have created a dating profile for a fan of these artists and/or the genre as well as read my magazine. below I have displayed a dating profile that explains her interest, fashion, and hobbies. I also used this dating profile to make a mock-up of the ideal audience so that I could refer back to it for a guide in the future.

As a producer who now knows the audience, you will include all the key components, a repertoire of elements that your target audience will decode for preferred reading.

BRANDING MOODBOARD AND STAR IMAGES

When creating my music magazine, I have created a mood board of ideas and aspects of the genre I have chosen using images I found on Pinterest these include different emo rappers and fashion based around the genre. which will help me advertise to the large majority that listens to this style of music for the magazine the gain attention. Furthermore, I will be able to use the mood board as a reference to what the magazine should involve and look like.

To view the complete mood board that I have put together select the first image to open Pinterest.

I also made a star image profile for one of the main people that could feature in the magazine. In this case, it was ‘Lil Peep’ and his achievements throughout life as well as other peoples thoughts of him before and after his passing in November of 2017. And describes his personality and attributes to his then fans and now society.

In my magazine, I would like feature people that are outgoing, emotional and expressive as well as an underrated young artist that is just starting in the rap though SoundCloud and sponsor them in as many ways possible getting them the necessary attention from studios and companies they could sign to in future using our help. I have attached below a star image presentation of the Idea person or persons that would feature in the magazine.

MASTHEAD DESIGN

For my music magazine which is based on the emo/punk rap genre. I researched different fonts to use for the masthead of my magazine and these are the five main types I narrowed it down to.  As the title of my magazine is ‘RIPTIDE’ I chose to put most of the fonts on a 25-degree angle as it links well into the idea of a riptide with the motion of the waves abruptly out to sea. The mastheads are very important to the magazine as it draws the reader in and shows AIDA modeling.

Branding and Mission Statement

My Magazine is called Riptide Limited:  The word definition of riptide is an area of sea where two different currents meet or where the water is extremely deep. Riptides make the water very rough and dangerous. Which I am using as a metaphor for the pressures of life in modern-day society and how people often are taken out by the tide of stress. This magazine shows that they are not alone and how music can help with these problems.

I have chosen the emo-rap genre because of it’s interesting with interesting characters in it.  With various styles and moods that have can personally understand,  I have researched the genre extensively and have made are word cloud based on the main components in the genre.  As seen below:

My Mission Statement:

‘RipTide’ is to show insight on modern-day issues with youth’s mental health, social pressures, and addiction. We will keep the world updated on these problems and inform you of dates of concerts and albums and EP’s of addicting artists. RipTide also acts as a platform for young anarchic artists coming up through the music industry, as well as a sponsor for small events.

NME Final

In this task we were allocated a magazine to copy and design using in-design and taught how to use the softer wear as we learning about the various tools  and skills you can use to made prints. I was given the magazine front page of Kendrick Lamar published by NME. why aim was the recreate the magazine front page to the finest detail, using the skill i had just be taught. I copy mostly everything apart from the backing image as that didn’t matter in the task that we were given. I started by getting a background image of Kendrick for the magazine then cropped it to fit in the a4 print and adjusted him to make him to where i would be putting the mask head etc.  i then added all the texts and barcode around him as closely to the example as possible for the best result.

Three thing I did well:

  1.  The main cover title is highly eye catching and matches the example and background closely as-well as being proportionate to the rest of the texts.

2.   The cover line fix well around his head and i added a fade from the right side to make the magazine look attractive and high quality.

3.   The NME logo top left is well representing of the real magazine and took along time to find the right font, to closely resemble the original. along with positioning  the date next to the the logo.

Things I could to better:

  1.  I could have chosen a better background image as back and white can be very hard to work around in colours of text.

During this task I learn high important skills that I will be able to use in my own magazine design process.

Links I used to learn about InDesign:

Front Cover Analysis

In this task give some album magazine covers to choose from. Then to annotate and analysis who the target audience would be for the magazine cover. I chose a rolling stones magazine with a E street song writer called Bruce Springfield. We had to try to denote what kind of people would buy this magazine, such as their age, hobbies and/or gender. Then write a brief psychographic on the reader and our generation abbreviation of them. I then wrote about the font, colours and image.

From this task I will be able to get a better understanding of a audience and how to advertise to them specifically in my magazine. By using font,  colours and designs to draw them in and the more captions to add their interest to carry on reading.

My Image that uses Mise en scene to communicate meaning.

Made with Padlet

This is my groups Indie Mood-board. We got this poster via choosing and card at random the reading the name. we found out that the Indie culture is mainly main stream music that isn’t in the top charts and the fashion that they choose is mostly 90s early 2000s, so still main stream but once again not as popular. As seen in the mood board above, we used the website called Padlet to make the Mood-board where we collected images and piece of text that show research into the Indie genre. We also used Google to research things such as style, fashion, music, artists etc. We used the Mood-board later to guide how we dress up our re-presenter for our genre. which help a-lot as Indie is hard to put a finger on at times as it is such a broad Lifestyle.

Genre Shoot.

Post it Man

After the mood board task we where told to dress up one person in our group to portray as an indie fan and then see what other peoples thoughts are on the costume. they shows this by commenting word on a post it note and stuck them to her. there comments included Groovy, Laid back, Friendly and easy going.

Shoot:

Final image

As a group we all decided to dress our actor in these clothes specifically as we thought they best represented the Indie genre. the multiply bracelets on the arms shows a calm and colourful personality. the organic woven hat show connotes a laid back attitude as you main see these types of hat on holidays and in relaxing and stress free resorts. the green and blue tinted sunglasses show of the hipster fashion that my group conclude they genre draws from as well as others. I chose this photo as my favourite/best as it is a mid shot and torso up and the show the whole outfit and her expressions with the captivating sunglasses for contracts.

in this assignment I have learnt how mise em scene can effect the message show to the audience. For example a picture of some in a threatening and aggressive stance/expression would connote to the audience distress, uncomfortably or frustration. Where as if the person was curled up in a corner it would connote sorrow, weakness or pity. I am going to use to include mise en scene to give the viewer on my magazine a more interesting and captivating impression using the method of mise en scene.

Conventional Design Feature of Magazine

In pairs we where told be choose one photocopied cover and annotate it with the main technical design features. Then after we took a to attach to this blog.

We then identified the main design features which are masthead, cover lines, main cover star, bar code, price, plug, pug, insets, and caption. As well as why it is important to understand the basic rules of layout for a magazine cover. Then we discuss how these all contribute in magazines and media.

Main cover line – Mainly in the centre of the cover and is the first thing a person reads of context to the the main image.

Masthead – Mostly at the top of the magazine, the name of the magazine/ company.

Cover lines – A small headline on the the front of the magazine in the centre advertising the story.

Captions – A brief text over of under an image or bigger piece of text that describes what is happening .

Plug – The selling points of a magazine which are made smaller than cover lines, usually on the side of the magazine.

Pug –  Usually on each of the magazine at the top, could be advertisements or sales.

Main cover star –  The main person on the front of the magazine

Inset – An inset in the magazine.

Issue date –  Tells you when to product came out.

Price –  Tells you the amount of the magazine.

The Camera Talks

For this task I was put in a group of 3 and was told to you use one of ourDSLRs and take at-least 50 photos around the school that attempt to tel a story. using. distance, angel and framing to show how the camera can make meaning, as-well as use each other as models. we used Mise en scene to take the pictures in particular body language, facial expressions, posture, proxemics and gesture.

We tried to use:

Angle – high, low canted x 3, aerial

Distance – ECU, MS, LS, ELS x 3

Composition – rule of thirds, lead space and depth of field x 3

The main three Shot that are in the spread sheet above:

Two shot , which is two people and mostly with one foreground with one person looking away from the camera and the other slightly out of focus which adds enigmatic or mysterious feel to the picture.

Aswell as the the two shot we also used the extreme and regular close ups which allows the person looking at the image read the emotion and venerability of the image and make us imagine what is happing in the foreground.

When creating my own magazine front cover I will be able to use all of the Mise-en-scene that I have learn in this task to make to image more eye catching to my ideal audience which I would have chosen advertise to. These techniques include position, lighting, setting, angles and facial expressions too  conveys to the audience clearly.
