NARRATIVE DEVELOPMENT – NARRATIVE SHEET

This is our narrative development sheet used to help create and order a narrative of a shoot and the overall music video. including key components such as MES and narrative ark to form a strong video.

We wanted to tell a story that was appropriate for the lyrics of the song and that complemented the synesthesia of the music with relevant imagery. An article on high-stress white-collar employment and how stressed individuals might become illogical was chosen by the group (which is the name of the song)

It is necessary to take into consideration lighting, props, clothes, and camera angles in order to accurately capture the lifestyle and images we were seeking to portray.

Throughout our story, a guy gets completely absorbed in the demands and expectations of his career, working long hours and overtime in order to compete and grow. However, the strains of daily life take their toll on him, and he loses his cool. He ultimately breaks down, refuses the promotion, and leaves his career in order to seek pleasure without regard for social judgments or financial status, a decision that has consequences.

In order to get this result, we rented the white studio and set up a desk, chair, and office equipment on the table. Our model dressed in a black suit with a white shirt, tie, and shoes to represent someone working in a high-pressure office environment. We made certain that the lighting was natural and evenly spread in order to simulate the illumination of a workplace.

Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut –

This is my group’s first draft rough cut for our music video. Whilst editing we ran along with small issues with lip-syncing the guitar to the track original. For this shoot, we when to Elliot’s my partner for the music videos house where we used his studio and garden as locations.

As a cinematographer looking back at this rough cut of performance for our music video the shot included are used well and make an effective product as all the shots are constantly good with meaning and emotion behind each one. Watching back the footage as a regular member of the group there are a few points that I would change such as costume and other mediums in MES but overall for a half-day shoot, the product came out as planned previously.

Focusing forward on the next shot which will be narrative focus taking away from this one the main facture that we will be taken away is using more MES in the shoot which shouldn’t be a problem due to the planning of next shoot should provide us with a good by-product of the pre-shoot effort.

Shoot 1 Reflection (Performance)

For our first shoot for our music video, we went to Elliot’s house and used his studio, garden and conservatory. for that day we focused on the performance half of the video and shot a variety of shots indoors and out to make a good selection and mix up the locations and lighting, which overall will affect what is connected to the audience and emotions flowing with the lyrics. Furthermore, as a cinematographer, I shot Elliot playing the guitar along with the beginning of the original.

Overall the shoot was good with and was effective in shooting to the plan/pitch we made previously, some minor problems happened such a not take photos of the process and completing all of the performance quicker than the time allocated but this allowed us time to brainstorm new ideas and thing ahead to the editing process.

Focusing forward to the narrative and editing process in this shoot, we learn the troubles of reshooting checking factors such as if the shot is focused or the iso is correct to what we want the image to like on screen. Using these factors in wisdom we will do much better as to the point mention as this showed what to do and not to do.

Star Image – The Performer

This is the star image/performer mood board of Tyler, the creator of a popular musician in the same genre as MASN, our song’s artist, with similar values. The board depicts how they are seen in the media as well as their personalities outside of music.

The artists are depicted as extraordinary in order to make them appear more significant than ordinary people, but they also have the star image of being ordinary in order to make the audience and fans feel as if they are within reach and can be themselves. According to Richard Dyer, this is a paradox of the celebrity since they are portrayed as two separate things, which can confuse the audience.

This is dependent on the artist’s target audience and a metanarrative for how their star image will be portrayed to the general public, as everything these celebrities do is premeditated and designed to get notoriety and positive PR.

He is represented as; humble, inspirational, and unique.

This will impact my music video’s representation of both the artist/ characters and music in the video contributing to the narrative.  They will impact the point mentioned above as from this research my partner and I have learned the cause and effect of artists’ actions and how they are represented through music and the contributing video. As Tyler is represented by the media as humble, inspirational, and unique w are going to base our performers with the same values making to grounded and nice individuals. For example, my performer for the narrative is a stressed businessman who tips over the edge and runs off to find a better life for himself, doing this reached help us find what it’s like to be stressed out at work or in life and how they are represented in the music industry.  Which will give a better effect on the audience and how the narrative is represented and how they contribute to the lyrics. To create an impactful perfomance we are going to carefully select items such as clothing, accessories, props, etc. To convey the perfect star image for the song’s artist.

Feedback summary;

  • Find a narrative that works with the performance.
  • Settle on locations and times to shoot.
  • good ideas and will work well for a music video
  • try not to overcomplicate the narrative

Tasks:

  • plan the narrative
  • make a visual shot list
  • 20-second music video draft edited and uploaded to youtube
  • make group agreement signed and dated

Focusing forward on shoot our music video making and first pitch and getting the feedback from our teacher is highly usefully as we now know and understand the problem raised and can fix them before getting ahead of ourselves and having to make a reshoot as it initially didn’t work.
