Genre Analysis of Pan’s Labyrinth

How it fits the genre of fantasy

  • It has a conventional location of a forest as well as ancient architecture.
  • It has conventional characters such as the mythical creatures which are the fairies, the faun and the pale man.
  • It has conventional events such as when the main character Ofelia has to prove her worth by completing three tasks.

How it is different from the genre of fantasy

  • One of the differences is the conventional story because the ending of the film is very different to most fantasy films. During the ending the hero Ofelia dies and does not defeat the Captain who was the villain.
  • Another difference was the conventional iconography. The features used were a similarity however the difference was the dagger confused the audience as they questioned what its purpose was.
  • Another difference was one of the conventional locations. Usually the home of the main character is peaceful and a safe place however Ofelia feels scared.
  • Also one other difference is that it borrows heavily from the war genre.

Reflection

The conventions in our genre poster, which is romance, refers to the repertoire of conventions in the films. Firstly we identified films that fall under the genre of romance and then created our poster focusing on the common themes, symbols and the plot of the story. The first theme that we identified was love. The conventions we drew were hearts, some full and one broken, which symbolise connected love as well as love that has become broken. Love is portrayed through all romance films usually between the two main characters. Another convention we drew was a love triangle. Again love triangles are usually a common convention in romance films which include ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ and ‘Sweet Home Alabama’. The convention we used to portray the theme of marriage was a lady’s hand with a wedding ring on her ring finger. Many romance films have married couples or a couple who get married in the film such as ‘Four Weddings & a Funeral’. Some conventions we drew were focused on particular films such as the slipper that refers to ‘Cinderella’, the ships that refer to ‘Titanic’ and the dancing couples that refer to ‘La La Land’ and ‘Dirty Dancing’.  Other conventions we drew were love letters, a disapproving father, lips and candles which we expect to feature in the genre of romance.

Reflection

The micro feature that initially attracted me to this film ’21 Bridges’ was the star Chadwick Boseman, who has recently been in global news, unfortunately because of his death. The macro feature that attracted me to ’21 Bridges’ was the genres action and thriller because they are genres that I usually enjoy the most.
