Sound Effects and Music

In order to be able to add sound to our thriller we used a different software called audacity. On this software we were able to combine the two songs (MP3 files)  and make them fade in and out to each other. We also added dramatic sound effects for the main title to bring emphasis on it.

Here’s some explanations on the tools you can use in audacity

Audacity tools

These tools are the basic tools that are easy to access when on the main screen of audacity. The first one ( the scissors) is a cutting tool which and split the track in to pieces.

The next two icons are copy and paste tools. To use them you have to highlight the area you want to copy and press the first button (the two pieces of paper) then put the mouse in the place in the track you’d like to put it and then press the clip board icon to paste it.

The last two are also very similar, they both make part of the track to silence. Depending on which icon you press depends which part of the music becomes silent. The first icon leaves the highlighted area still in the track but makes everything else silent. The last one makes the highlighter area silent and leaves everything else as they were before.

Amplify

This tool is used to change the volume of track. You can move the blue icon to how loud or quite you’d like the track to become.

Echo

You can make a echo effect by using this tool. You are able to change the time between the echos and how long after the original sound effect the start.

Reverb

This is the reverb effect. Reverberation is very similar to echos but an echo is just a sound repeating after the original. A reverb effect is when the sound reflects off the walls so becomes quieter and  take longer to reach the listener.

Sounds for Thriller

In this task we had to find some sounds that would be good for our thriller. We did this to get a better understanding of what sounds we need for our thriller and how we would be able to make them. As some people are able to make sounds like a gun shot for example with out actually shooting a gun. They may do this by popping a balloon inside a bin.

Below is some mp3 tracks of some sounds that would suit our thriller and a little description.

These sounds are good representation of a door opening and closing.  This would help connote the action code of the characters going inside the house.

This sound would show that the female is turning the radio on. Once you hear this I think we should play some jazz music and then slowly change it to tense music to bring more suspense to our thriller. This would imply the radio turning on as an action code.

This sound of a person walking in leaves and muddy area would help bring our Mise en Scene out more when the man is walking along the path.

At the start of our thriller there is a tap running this sound would be good at representing that. This would convey a symbolic code of purity and peace.

I like this composition by Han Zimmer. It can be very tense and suspicious so would be great inspiration for our thriller. This implies time passing and becoming more suspicious.

I would play this music when the girl turns the radio on and then slowly transition it into a more suspense composition.

Foley Sounds

We recorded some Foley sounds to put in place of other sounds.

Foley sounds are sound effect that are not made by the exact sound of the object in the scene. For example when a person hits the ground you could record a pillow hitting the floor instead.

We recorded the sound of the switch on this speaker to imply that the radio what being turned on with a click.

We have the girl scraping the table with the nail file. To make this stand out more we recorded someone scraping their key’s against the table.

We also recorded sounds of people walking in leaves and on brick to enhance the thriller.

Soundscape Running Order

I made this so we were able to know what order the sounds are in the thirller. It tells us whether we will have to record the sound or use sounds we already have from the shooting day. It also tells us whether the sound is diegetic or non diegetic.

Synaesthesia

Synaesthesia is a term for when you associate more than one sense together. For example by listening to numbers some people taste certain flavors.

Today we listened to a soundtrack and then noted down the pictures we saw in our head and the words that came to mind. From those notes we came up with a list of words and then made a collage out of it. We did this to understand more on how sound can change a the narrative of the film, it could also determined the genre for instance if we play more classical romantic music it may make our film genre romance.

Draft 2 Feedback

We recorded feedback for our titles.

Strengths

  • Clear readable font and size.
  • Good transitions (in and out).

Targets

  • Make the positioning more organised. As at the moment it looks very random.
  • Make the colour of the text more readable to the backgrounds. Maybe added a white outline as it is usually easier to read with that.

Effects and Titles

Once we had finished editing our draft one we looked at adding titles to our thriller. We did this in Adobe after effects, we learnt how to use this and added the titles with transitions (fade in and fade out). Below are some examples of the tools I learnt how to use.

Characters

In this box you can control the font you use, the size and more. We had to make sure that the text was positioned in a place where in didn’t obstruct the background image. We had to make sure that the text colour was readable.

Effects and presets

Effects

In this box you can find the transitions for text we used fade in by characters and fade out slow. We had to make sure that the transitions weren’t to distracting from the film. We also tried to make them connote as suspicion.

Draft 2

This draft includes the titles for our thriller.

Font Designs

For our title we have to choose which font we want to use. Here are the fonts I looked at it includes many fonts including ones that may not suit a thriller.

Font design

From this task I have learnt that the font, size and spacing of the text can relate to the genre in the film.

Titles Research

For our opening scene of our thriller we need to show the opening credits which includes people like the producers, director and actors.  We researched 3 different films to find out the order of the titles and different jobs.

Deadwood

We made this time line by noting what time the titles show and what they say. We also paid attention to the size, font or the text, images and music that were playing as well

Title order

From this work I’ve learnt that the order of titles can relate to a genre. I also learnt that simple can be better as a to much can make ti unclear and too messy.
