Draft of Front Page

Below is my first draft for my music magazine front cover that I have created on Indesign. Here are my peers’ responses to it

Pros:

  • Star image is appropriately dressed to fit the genre
  • Colour scheme of the magazine fits the genre

Cons:

  • Change the layout of it
  • Add more cover lines
  • Add a barcode

My targets for my newly improved magazine will include a change of some fonts and designs and perhaps the alignment of the headlines. The newly improved magazine cover will also need to include a barcode

First Shoot Contact Sheet(s)

Below you can see my cover sheet in which one of these images will be the cover photo for my music magazine. Overall I think my photo shoot was a success as I ended up with over 100 images to choose from for my cover even though some images were not in focus or were too dark.

Under my contact sheets I have added the images which turned out the best to fit my genre and style of my music magazine. I will later use photoshop to my chosen image to make it e.g brighter or enhance the colours.

Mast Head Designs

Below are 5 different Masthead design ideas that I could potentially use for my front cover of my music magazine. The fonts and colour match the associated genre of music which is pop, I know this from my previous research.

I think that the second and fifth are the best as in my opinion they are the most conventional to suit my genre of my music magazine.

Production Meeting Agenda for 1st Photo Shoot

Below is my first agenda for my first photo shoot, this focuses on the model I have chosen which is Laura and focusing on her outfit , makeup and props etc. The aim of this shoot is to get comfortable using the camera and its different features which can be used to enhance the image and make it more outstanding and to get used to the different lighting techniques using the equipment in the studio to produce the best possible image. This time was also used to get an idea of what kind of image I want my front cover to look like.

Star Image – theirs and mine

Below is a presentation on a music artist which I chose which I thought best fits my chosen genre which is pop. I chose the artist Ariana Grande as in my opinion she suits and best fits the ideal person to attract my target audience and because she is one of my favorite artists of all time.

Richard Dyer

Richard dyer is a media theorist who looks at the paradox of the artist which are:

  • Extraordinary – the talent the artist has
  • Ordinary –  how us as an audience would be able to relate to the artist as a ‘normal’ person

We also looked at his metanarratives which are of the following:

  • Music
  • Performance
  • Concerts
  • Social media
  • Articles

I have created a moodboard below to indicate what style and image I want my star for my music magazine to look like. I will have one female model as pop is mainly directed towards female teenagers and over. I am choosing a bright (preferably pink/purple) outfit for my model as this fits well with a pop themed magazine. In addition I am adding jewelry and makeup to my model as this gives more of a vibrant and poppy image to attract the audience.

Communicating my Brand

The task this lesson was to create a moodboard of different images relating to my chosen genre for my music magazine.

I have created a moodboard from Pinterest of images relating to the music genre pop which will be very useful in moving forwards.

My moodboard contains examples of:

  • Different magazine covers of pop
  • Different pop artists
  • Colour Pallets
  • Different magazine page layouts

My Audience Profile

Below is a dating profile that I have created about someone of my target audience for my music magazine of the genre Pop.

I also used YouGov research to create the dating profile finding the demographics and psychographics of my target audience of the genre Pop. I did this as when creating my music magazine I will need to encode information that my target audience will decode.

It is important that my audience decodes what I have encoded as this will ultimately be their preferred type of reading.

Branding Ideas + Mission Statement

My chosen genre for my music magazine is pop music as it is what I listen to often and and it is recognized all over the world. The name of my music magazine is called ‘Sweetness’ which I think is a good catchy name for an audience as it connotes tenderness and positiveness. This will attract all ages which will gain more popularity and pop is more well known

Mission Statement

Sweetness is a unique virtual world where you can bury yourself in the latest gossip that we share. This is for the pop lovers. Sweetness highlights the key features and top stories of different pop artists and exclusive news. It gives you the opportunity to e.g. listen to newly released music every week and to get more involved with your interests. You will hear the latest interviews , release tour dates etc.

This will inspire young people and help with their identity and self encouragement.

A Front Cover Analysed

In this lesson I have learnt and understood how every aspect of a magazine cover contributes to the appeal for a target audience. For instance the target audience for the particular magazine shown below was teenagers-middle aged men.

When coming to producing my own music magazine I will remember to use the new skills that I have learnt which are the skills of audience profiling (who the target audience is) and textual analysis (the content in the media). This will be extremely useful as it will help market my magazine to my target audience in order for my magazine to be as successful as possible.
