Conventional Shots & Narratives For My Genre

Component 3, Music Video

To explore and identify key filming conventions and performance styles for my genre, as a group we took screen shots of different conventional shots, frames and angles from a music video in the same genre as our chosen song to give us an idea of how these conventions help portray the music videos narrative, giving us a clearer idea of what conventions to include in our own music video.

Made with Padlet

Narrative Conventions- In my chosen genre, Love, lust and emotion tend to be the most common themes that are represented. These narratives help the artist to convey their star image through acting/performance ensuring their narrative is portrayed well.

Narrative Structure- Most commonly, linear and episodic narrative structures appear in my genre with aspects of performance also.

Performance Styles- My chosen genre music videos often include the performer and actor together in the narrative. Vibrant, fun colours are commonly used as well as interesting, unique locations. During the lip syncing aspects of the music video, the star is commonly seen to be using a direct mode of address when lip syncing, involving the audience within the music video.

By doing this task, I have learnt how cinematography and editing are essential to be able to portray the star image effectively, not only reflecting the music videos genre, but conveying the repertoire of elements for that specific genre, giving the target audience what they expected.

Focusing forward, when it comes to shooting our music video, as a group we will take into consideration what specific conventions will portray our music video and star image effectively and clearly.

Final Song Choice

Component 3, Music Video

After coming together with my chosen group, we collectively decided on this song as our final song choice. We decided on this because the narrative aspect is planned out extremely well with a great idea for the performance element of the music video. On top of that, the conventions are realistic and easy to replicate, making it clearer for the star image on what to do.

Focusing forward, my group will now start doing some ind depth planning (making an agenda) and preparing what is needed for this music video, gathering props, costumes and models for the video.

Initial song ideas for a video- Mini Pitch

Component 3, Music Video

To give me a clear idea of potential music video ideas, I made a mini pitch of a realistic and doable song that I think would be a good idea. Within the slide show, I clearly portrayed my music videos aims: it has a linear narrative with a performance aspect. it conveys a clear, continuous story-line/theme throughout the whole music video and it shows my ideas for MES,location and props.

Focusing forward, I have a potential, well thought out music video idea when it comes to deciding withing my group. It has given me an idea of what needs to be brought together to plan the basics of a music video, expanding my understanding of the music industry.

Music Video Forms & Conventions

Component 3, Music Video

To gain more understanding of the importance of narrative, performance and technical conventions of music videos, we researched and analysed different types of genred music to give us an idea of what we need to include in our own music video.

Each genre will consist of different types of technical conventions in order to fit their genre and sell well to their target audience. MES is an important element when it comes to music videos, not only does it play an important role of portraying the music genre, it is also the artist’s professional brand face. Now understand the importance of the different elements included in a music video, I can use this as a guide for my own music video, giving me an idea of what performance and narrative aspects will suite my chosen music video genre.

Narrative Exploration

Component 3, Music Video

To get an idea of a good narrative for a song, we’ve researched different music videos and their narratives for the video. By doing this, it’s given us an idea of what to include in our music video.

This video is mainly narrative with hints of performance in it. The music video is linear, showing the audience what happens in order that the events unfolded in. The music videos story is about the double standards that often exist between men and women and a story of role reversal. in the music video, she explores what it would be like to do everything he does to her in a day. The ending shows the gender roles going back to normal and the man going to work, not chancing his ways. I feel like this ending suited the music video as it reflects how things are in real life.

This video is an illustrative music video, the music video correlates with the actual music, giving the video meaning. The music video is a combination video, it has elements of narrative and performance, with the actor having an active role in the narrative. The story line of the music video is a boy begging for the girl to take him back which the girl is refusing too. There isn’t a proper ending to the music video, the ending is more of a montage. I feel like there could’ve been better ways the end the music video.

This is an amplified music video, with the music video correlating with the music a little bit. The story line happens in a linear way, the music video takes you through the narrative in the order that it unfolded in. The story line of this music video is about a girl with superpowers who entered some sort of mystical animal into a fighting competition where it won and she vanished the evil boss away. The ending of the video is the boss being attacked by the other mystical animals which personally, I think that was quite a good way to end the video as it fitted in well with the videos theme.

3 Quirky Narrative Headlines

One man party- a boy spends all day creating party invitations, decorates his house and cooks loads of party food for his birthday party when in reality, no one ends up coming to his party

Righteousness of faith-  A girl grew up in a sexist family where they didn’t support her dreams of coming the next president as it’s a ‘mans job’. Once she left home and lost all contact with her family, she chased her dreams and became a well respected president.

Nature Valley- A group of teenage boys went camping for the weekend where they found a waterfall. They decided to go investigate however, they discovered something that they didn’t bargain for…

Narrative Sequence

Component 3, Preliminary Video Tasks

To help me understand how to film successful videos for my digital technology, I’ve created a storyboard about someone creating a paper aeroplane to ensure that I use a variety of shots (match on action, shot reverse shot, peds etc). A different shot is represented by a different post it note, guaranteeing that I show that I can film a wide variety of camera shots.

Evaluation

What Went Well:

  • We used a wide variety of camera shots, ensuring that the audience don’t become bored
  • When editing our video, we used premier pro to edit our shots, trying to transition them into each other as smoothly as possible
  • We layered music over the video which correlated with the story line of the video, keeping the audience engaged with the video
  • We conveyed the narrative fairly well

What We Could’ve Improved:

  • We could’ve improved the focus of our video as it was mainly out of focus
  • We could’ve ensured that the lighting of our video was better as it wasn’t great
  • We needed to stick to the 180 degrees rule throughout the video as it confuses the audience
  • Some of the shots weren’t steady, we could’ve taken advantage of the tripod more
  • The continuity wasn’t portrayed very clearly

Focusing forward, now that we have produced and edited our own narrative sequence, we know the basic skills for our own music video, helping us achieve a high grade.

Previous Student’s Work

Music Video

As I’m making a music video, I need to understand the key assessment criteria for a successful music video. To develop some more understanding, I’ve analysed and deconstructed a previous student’s music video, giving me an idea of what needs to be included to make a top grade music video.

Mise-en-scence

In my opinion, elements of mise-en-scene are very strong in this video, from all of the props to the specific jewellery she is wearing. The costumes and props that were used all had hints of pink in them, amplifying the genre that was trying to be portrayed, giving the costumes and props clear meaning in the narrative of the video. The variety of settings adds excitement and dynamics to the video. As there is no real story line, a variety of settings was needed or else the target audience would lose interest.

Camera

In my opinion, there could’ve been a wider variety of camera angles used, especially some close ups. There was a decent amount of different shots used but they’re not very engaging for the target audience. To engage the audience more, there could’ve been more shots from the birds eye view setting in the music video as it would’ve added some more dimension to the video. Not only that, but I thought it was an amazing shooting location that should’ve been shown more in the music video.

Editing

The editing used in the music video was the weakest element in my opinion. This is because the editing of the clips didn’t really reflect the rhythm of the music, reducing the live performance effect that most music videos aim for. However, the editing of the colours throughout the video was done really well. You can see that there is a pink undertone added throughout the video, emphasising the genre that was trying to be portrayed. Furthermore, the editing of the star image’s lip-syncing was done well, successfully linking the video with the music.

Focusing forward, from doing this task I now have a clearer understanding of what is needed for a top grade music video. All technical production skills and music video conventions play an important role in making a successful music video.
