Conventional Shots and Narratives for my genre

Made with Padlet

For this task I went on padlet.com and had to find the different types of camera shots that are utilised within my music genre. In this instance I am doing the band called Cage The Elephant which is a group of people based on alternative rock. We looked at different music bands which have the same genre and conventions of Cage The Elephant. We notice that they utilise a lot of different editing and camera techniques to manipulate someones emotions, even if the individual watching the music video is unconsciously oblivious of the editing & camera shots meaning. These shots are also a plan of my shot list I will use for my groups performance shoot next week.

Initial song ideas for a video – Mini pitch

Here is a word cloud that I made to describe the words of the music video I have chosen:

Narrative and what will happen:

What I want it to be about two friends that have known each other for a while, one of the, being really struggling financially then there is an anonymous man who offers a bounty worth £1,000,000 if he kills his friend.

Narrative exploration

1: Man finds someone he likes, she likes him then she moves on and the man gets angry.

2: man gets angry at his job and gets fired, then lives freely.

3: man is painting the stars that sung in the music and at the end it is completed.

Three of my own ideas:

1: Man climbs up mountain
2: Man explores jungle
3: Man lives his last day doing whatever he can.

Narrative Sequence

Here is a narrative clip I have made of scoring a basket:

In Adobe Premiere Pro, I’ve learned a variety of editing techniques, such as adjusting the hue and saturation of the movie to make the colors more brilliant. I also learned skills like editing, filming, and various camera settings and movements. The abilities will assist me in preparing for my upcoming music video. But it’s critical that I collect decent clips because it’ll be difficult to enhance the clip with editing, unless I spend more time learning more editing techniques. We also broke the 180 degree rule about 10 seconds into the video. This rule applies when recording one side of something and then filming the other side, resulting in an uneven/strange look. For instance, if you were recording one side of a live football match, you would know which team should be shooting in which goal, but if you were filming the other side, they would be shooting in the opposite direction, which could be confusing. Now I will remember for next time to not make this error in my music video.

Previous Student’s Work – Assessment and Critique

My favorite music video from a previous student:

The reason I like this music video so much is because there are a lot of quick and short cut edit’s, an example of this is at 12 – 13 seconds in the video. They also had an effect where one of the cuts it out of focus but then instantly starts to focus. I also like how well they’ve utilised their tripod in lots of cuts. This is good in music videos because by stabilizing your footage with this equipment you will make your shots clearer, more professional and not distract the viewer. The setting to do with MES shows that he looks like he is trapped in a room and he is trying to find a way out.

My peer assessment on previous students’ work:

Music Video Form & Conventions

Here are the 3 music videos that I have chosen to analyse:

I’ve gathered three separate music videos from three different genres. In order to obtain a better knowledge of the conventions inside a music video and how they may be separated into story and performance, as well as how they are utilised, I have dissected and analyzed each music video on the document above.
