Our Storyboard:

The narrative sequence:

Whilst filming our sequence we made sure that we kept in mind the success criteria to get into the habit of making a video that follows the brief. The brief includes:

  • Filming for continuity
  • Have one deliberate camera movement
  • A reaction shot
  • Use at least 5 different shots and angles

The deliberate camera movement we used was a tilt from the characters feet slowly moving to reveal their face. We also had a eyeline match where the camera followed the male characters eyes to see his friend on the opposite side of the court. we successfully had five different camera shots and angles including an over the shoulder shot as well as a low angle shot of the ball flying through the air. For this task we followed the success criteria and the brief which ensured that we have had good practice for when we have a brief for our coursework. We learnt many things whilst filming and editing this sequence such as;

How to use a tripod:

  • How to connect the camera to the tripod so that it is stable and steady ready to film
  • How to extend the legs of the tripod to make the camera at certain heights.
  • How to extend the neck part of the tripod to extend it to its maximum height.

How to film to edit:

  • capturing good footage
  • having our actors repeat the entire sequence in different angles to ensure we had footage of the whole sequence in different angles in preparation for editing.

How to use premier pro:

  • How to cut
  • How to edit the match on action, such as the handshake , smoothly.
  • How to use the transitions that are already included in the programme
  • How to mark in and mark out to cut a clip

Focus Forward

This task has taught me an incredible amount about the editing and filming process within the media. This task was the first time I have used any of the hardware and software involved, except for the camera itself, during this one task I have already learnt so much that I had no idea about before. This task has helped me to familiarise myself with some of the software and hardware we will be using ourselves when we come to create our own music videos.

The music video:

Analysis:

Camera

This is a screenshot from the music video. This scene is at the very beginning and is the first thing the audience sees. A tripod was used to keep the camera in the exact same place and to steady the camera also. However, what is intriguing is that the camera staying in the same place but the character being cut in different places suggest that they are stuck in the setting and can not escape.

Multiple camera positions and angles are used throughout the video. For example in the screenshot the mysterious and psychopathic creature is stuck behind the bars once again demonstrating being stuck and trapped as well as abandoned. The camera is also seen to be at a canted angle in a few shots which fits the narrative of the music video.

Editing

In this screenshot the character is in three different positions on the screen at the same time. This shows the high ability of editing skills. The centre shot of the character is much clearer than the other two that are positioned either side, this connotes that the music video is going to have a eerie creepy feel to it as well as demonstrating the false reality world this creature lives in.

Another key editing point is when the cutting speed of the video slows down, when the creature has finally escaped. This is then followed by a slow motion video of the euphoric character that is not trapped opening her eyes on the "swoosh" sound in the music. This demonstrates to the audience that the other character may have an idea as to what is going on and that she can see the psychopath escaping. This develops the audiences understanding of the music video narrative.

Mise-en-scene

This chain is a significant prop in the music video as it is used as a dramatic device to amplify the idea that they are trapped and stuck in this dinghy and horrifying settings. Their are also chain like sounds in the background of the music which ties in well with the use of the prop. The metal chain also has a cold connotation as well as discomfort communicating to the audience how much of a terrible life they are living.

The make-up of this character juxtaposes significantly with the make-up and hair of the other. This character is portrayed as an innocent and free young lady who is content. On the other hand, the other character is portrayed as a monstrous, psychopathic creature that is being locked up and trapped. These juxtaposing ideas work well as it gives the audience two different perspectives and two different lives to follow. this proves the importance of hair and makeup in creating a star image.

Assessment Grid

Reflection:

Analysing a music video that was created by students in my position has helped me to understand the assessment criteria. This is useful because we are now mindful of the brief to follow we are making our own videos.. This task has also aided me in understanding the high standard that has been set by previous students.

Our first task of the music video unit was to understand the components of a music video and to understand the reasonings behind narratives and performances in different videos. We then had the task of analysing three music videos, of our choice, focusing on unpicking the elements of performance and narrative in each one to help us comprehend the importance of star image.

The music videos I analysed:

My analysis:

Reflection:

This task gave me a better understanding of what a music video is and the key components and conventions of them. Key conventions where also compromised in some of these music videos however, we could understand why the artist chose to do this some conventions that were broken were; an anachronic music video or a disjunctive music video.
