Star Image – The performer

Star Image – The Performer

This is our collectively made mood board of Images, Articles, social media profiles and twitter posts from our star image, Mitski.

We created a collage surronding our star image representing the Mise en scene through album covers, articles and pictures. This gave us better understanding and knowledge of our artist which is beneficial in the making of our music video as it allows us to portray Mitski in the re creation of her song and to sell the star image.

Made with Padlet

Reflection:

Having watched a serious of music videos and focusing in on different shot types we created a padlet by doing this it allowed us to have a visual representation of all the shots we wanted and needed within our music video that we used for specific scenes.  Having made a pre visualized checklist of the shots we needed, benefited us when filming our music video as we knew what and when we wanted to use when it came to the time. Knowing how using different shots can create different meanings through research before our shoot we had a good set idea of what shots we wanted to use in specific areas of different scenes.

Positives:

  • We are portraying the songs name “washing machine heart” in our song by having our end killing scene using the washing machine to cover up all the mess and blood caused.
  • Using the lyrics in the song “not wearing my usual lipstick” and then showing in our music video the man coming home from a night out with a different persons lipstick on the collar of his shirt then the lipstick his girlfriend normally wears.
  • The main singer in our song is also the main character in our narrative sequence which lets the audience know she is the main star and the focus of the music video

Targets:

  • In our initial idea we had to much detail in our narrative so when filming we will need to prioritise the key points within our narrative and leave out extra little details we wanted to add.
  • We need to make sure our actors portray the message we want them to by looking into detail with their outfits and body language
  • Making sure we incorporate different angles in our narrative sequence to focus in on details within it to show the main key points for example close up of the murder weapon to indicate the significant of it.

Above is a signed agreement within our group of how we plan to share responsibilities and collaborate when producing our music video. Having done this agreement within our group its allowed us to know who is doing what and when and being able to share responsibilities within the group to ensure everything goes smoothly. This also allows us something to look at when we have a disagreement or not know what we are doing.

Final song choice

Final Song Choice

Once myself, Belle and Emma were put into our music video groups we listened to a variety of songs through our own personal pitches and songs that had been done by different artists. Once we had listened to multiple songs we shortlisted 2 or 3 and we made the final decision to do Mitski song washing machine heart. We had set on this song due to having an instant narrative pop into our head with a good story line we thought would be achievable as well for this song. The song fitted our indie alternative genre which benefitted us when creating our narrative as we didn’t want to keep it plain and simple.

Reflection

Story Board – Before creating our video we created a story board consisting of all the different shots and angles we wanted to include when filming our narrative sequence. Doing this allowed us to remember every every angle needed for each scene to make our sequence come together. When creating a short sequence it is important to use a wide range of different shots to allow the sequence to flow.

Tripod –  Using a tripod when producing our short sequence allowed us to get steady focused shot. Having the tripod to place the camera on allowed us to frame the right positioning and angle within the camera.

Adobe Premiere –  After going over all our shots we had created we launched the app adobe premiere to put the short mini videos into a 30 second sequence. Having used this app and learning the basics prior to putting our videos in it allowed my group to accomplish a clean flowing sequence whilst using the editing techniques along the way.

Overall doing this mini narrative sequence allowed me to gain better insight when using a tripod and camera and using adobe premiere to edit my footage and to produce a small narrative sequence. Having this knowledge will help me along the way heading towards making my music video.

Reflection:

In this task I chose three music videos that I analyzed for narrative and performance.  Doing this task I was able to study in detail specific moments in the music videos that pulled everything together. Having a music video that is all narrative allows the artist to portray a deeper meaning to their song and have the opportunity to create a story to go alongside their music .  Within the narrative music videos they really focus in on MES, focusing in to the specific details such as costume and makeup that’ll go with the genre and storyline within the music video. Moving forward towards my own music video I have learnt the key conventions in making one and how much detail you have to put in to make your narrative and performance perfect.

Camera

  • Throughout this specific music video the variety of angles, camera shots and framing captures each moment perfectly. Specifically close ups on the lead singer really draws the audience in to listen to what he is saying and the meaning behind the facial expressions gets portrayed clearly with the close ups. An example of a low angle shot (at 0:46) allows the audience to get a full wide looking shot of the people dancing and expressing their emotions through movement and the rhythm of the song.
  • The camera always being set a certain angle whilst shooting a specific part for example at (0:12) when they did an extreme close up onto the drum they stayed at the certain angle, which follows through throughout the whole camera shooting, having this being done it allows the audience to be able to focus on one specific angle without the camera being moved around

Editing

  • Frames within a frame
  • Cutting frames from one to another
  • The editing at (2:35) with the castle in the background can be seen clearly by the way they edited that specific person at the time to be almost transparent with only his head being clearly visible as well as the illusion in the background of another person going through that transparent person doing completely different movements whilst the camera is still being shot at the exact same angle

Mise-En-Scene

  • Costumes representing tribal culture giving a deeper meaning throughout the song representing the tribe
  • The specific body image look they went for e.g. marks on the chest, laid back scruffy hair, facial markings showing the specific details they tried to achieve
  • Accessories around the neck signifying the importance throughout tribal culture
  • The cave man look was achieved throughout the narrative implied but props and setting going with the stereotypical theme of a caveman, the dark caves, writing on the walls and singing around the fire.

Reflection:

I chose to research Lana Del Rey , I looked at several different news articles and headlines written about Lana Del Rey to get a better understanding on what I can write about my star image and how to make it more interesting for my audience. I also had a look at different magazines that Lana Del Rey had been featured in and the different conventions the magazine used to make it stand out. I found that Lana Del Rey  gets presented as a down to earth, empathetic and creative person which all the headlines and articles suggest. When Lana Del Rey gets featured in magazines it is often that they write an article regarding her personal life and what the latest updates on her are so that their audience stay engaged.

I then planned out exactly how I wanted my star image to look including their hair, makeup and clothing and all the other small details that will bring the whole look together. I then added aspects of Mise-en-scene in order to really make sure my star image fits the profile of Indie Pop. I also thought about the different connotations of my star image and how I want certain Colours to represent a certain mood and feeling. I was also looking at the different lightings and body poses and how that will bring together my final star image.
