Preliminary Task

The brief for the preliminary task:

“A continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.

This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.”

I have used the following camera techniques:

  • High angle
  • Mid shot
  • Long shot
  • Close up
  • Low angle
  • Aerial shot
  • Zoom

I used these techniques to create a sense of realism and continuity to create a narrative in way that is clear to the audience, to help them understand what is happening in the scene. This also helps the audience to feel as if they are actually there with the actors through the use of point of view shots and shot reverse shot.

I have learnt to use the following continuity editing rules: Shot Reverse Shot, Match on Action and also the 180 degrees rule which gives the audience the sense of tension between the actors talking.

I used these rules to determine the video ran smoothly and in chronological order making the narrative interesting to watch.

I have learnt to use the following tools/techniques in Premiere Pro:

  • Import
  • export
  • rendering
  • setting point
  • mark in
  • mark out
  • razor tool

I used these tools to import the footage onto Premiere Pro, cut it  and place it together in chronological oder to create continuity .

If I was to do this project again I would do some things differently:

  • I would make sure that we didn’t film any camera techniques that we didn’t need like the Aerial shot we jumped to, I would do this differently because the shots didn’t make sense to the narrative and in consequence making the video look substandard and cruddy.
  • Something else I would make sure I do differently is fixing the break in 180 degree wall we made near the beginning of the video, so that viewers would be able to piece the clips up better.
