What is a contents page?

After creating some layouts for my contents page it has allowed me to consider which layouts I prefer. After drawing out some layouts that I like I made a collage of different content pages to help inspire me when I come to making my own. Once looking at them I figured out that they all have certain parts in common which make it conventional to a contents page, for examples they all have page numbers, coverlines and an index. After I have looked at the content pages it has enabled me to consider the AIDA and to create interest within my audience. I want it to attract entertain and also provide information to my readers.

Catchy Headlines

“All exclusive now!”

“Hurry up before it sells out!”

“Last chance to buy”

“Running out soon.”

“New album out now”

Draft of front page and self assessment

After creating my draft magazine cover I looked at the marking scheme for it and wrote down what I had included and what I need to consider when I come to making the proper one. This enabled me to see what I had and hadn’t done and a rough grade of what my magazine cover is currently at.

When I make the proper one I need to improve on numerous aspects of the page such as adding more cover lines and editing the ordinal image on photoshop. After making these adjustments it will enable my magazine to look more conventional and attract a wider audience. It will also allow it to be more professional. I considered 5 targets to give myself to further improve this.

Five targets to give myself:

  • Add more headlines
  • Edit the image more on photoshop
  • Make sure the cover lines are catchy
  • consider and make more layouts
  • Cut out the model more precisely

First contact sheets shoot

I took some photos to go onto my magazine, I considered the MES EN SCENE whilst taking these photos. I will use one of these images for my star image and I used certain costumes and props to make sure that it linked in with my genre. I used the bold props to portray the star as extraordinary but the hand gestures made him look more rebellious giving off the idea that he is ordinary. I made sure that the camera settings were correct in order to take the images so that they were sharp and in focus. When my audience observe this image I want the star to be decoded as bold and confident. I also want them to be able to encode this image. I took this images to ensure that it fit in with the conventions of the genre.

So what am I up against?

By completing this sheet it has enabled me to get a clearer idea of what my USP is and the competition that my magazine is up against. This has also allowed me to think about my target audience and what entertainment they’re looking for. I want my audience to be able to reinforce their personal identity from my magazine and I also want my magazine to encourage social interaction. I will consider how I right my text within my magazine to create  preferred reading. I’ve thought about my AIDA to keep my audience interested. I want my magazine to contain information that educates my audience. This has also allowed me to think about my unique selling point and how I can gain interest.

Mastheads

I looked at different mastheads for my brand to go in music magazine, this way it will help to give me an insight of what fonts and colours will fit into my genre. I will consider AIDA when choosing a font to go in my magazine so that it will fit my audiences interests, attract my audience so that it catches their eye and creates interest.

I created a moodboard based off my genre to give me inspiration into my magazine, I looked at different fonts, layouts within different brands, colours to represent emotions and cover photos of bands; so this could give me a clear idea of what my audience expectations are. I looked at how different symbols and colours detonate different meanings and I will also consider different connotations to add into my magazine.

I chose Oasis as my star image to write about, the paradox of the star is that they can be extra-ordinary and ordinary. I collected different images and news articles to denotate meanings and connotate different colours and how they’re portrayed from this. By doing this it will help to give me an idea about the conventions of a music magazine how to portray my star correctly. I created a slide to help me look at how my star is presented and the different aspects of MES to include within the image. I will explore the metanarrative I will use within my music magazine. I will look at the repertoire of elements within my theme to make sure that it links in with my Indie-Rock. I want my star to be represented as rebellious and confident throughout my music magazine.

My audience profile and research

I researched about Indie Rock bands and looked at what the fans of those bands would typically like. This gave me a general idea of what my audience want so that I can make media specified to my target audience.  I also looked at the demographics of my audience such as age and gender so that I could understand aim my magazine at certain types of people.

This is a personal dating profile from a typical fan of our genre. When I create my magazine I will use certain colours to encode different meanings and emotions, I will make my magzine entertaining to increase social interaction. I will consider the demographics and target audience of my magazine so that it can fit to their needs. By looking at examples of media from producers it will allow think of new ideas and inspire me in this work. I want my magazine to not only attract and entertain people but also to educate my audience within this genre of music. I will think about how I write my text so it is in preferred reading and not oppositional otherwise this can portray my magazine as biased. I will make my magazine clear to read so that is can easily be decoded by readers.

Branding ideas and mission statement

We had to create a word cloud based on a certain type of genre we picked for our music magazine. I decided to choose indie-rock as I feel as though this theme is quite open and I will easily get inspired with ideas throughout this theme.

I’ve looked into several names for my magazine here are a few I have considered…

  • Metro Indie
  • Indie Pursuit
  • Indie Spark
  • Rock Pulse

After looking at different names on the word generator I have chosen upon the name ‘Metro Indie’. My magazine will include concerts and festivals, it will inform people on featured cover stars and details about events. I will make my magazine relatable so it will gain social interaction from the audience and so that readers can create personal identification with the singers featured. I will need to consider my unique selling point which could be that mine may feature new talent enabling mine to stand out against competitors.

“Our business provides entertainment for our audience, we create media that fits in with our audience this will allow them to create personal identification with our brand. Our magazines include vibrant colours drawing in our audiences attention. Our brand creates media that fits in with our audiences needs.”
