Test Shoots

My group filmed a test shoot where one of us lip synced to the song that we would use for our music video and to get used to coverage of the star. We attempted to use a variety of shots which is an effective way of portraying a star image. We shot the clip outside and used basic Mise En Scene using a plain white location and used a shot of me inside of a freezer to have a variety of settings. I also wore a pair of sunglasses to just add some Mise En Scene and it represented the star as ordinary through minimal costume. We then edited the clip and added transitions, video filters and edited it to the beat and lined the music up to the lip syncing to make the video clean and help practice for editing the real music video to the beat. We felt that this video was one way that the music could be interpreted, as cheerful and energetic.

WHAT WENT WELL:

  • Good range of shots
  • Used basic Mise En Scene (sunglasses and freezer)
  • Edited on the beat well
  • Used basic transitions between clips

WHAT COULD BE BETTER:

  • Clips could be ordered better
  • More Mise En Scene
  • Edit more to make more exciting for the audience
  • Film more shots with movement in for variety.

In conclusion, this video was an introduction into how to lip sync for a music video and how to edit on beat and portray star image through camera shots and narrative for the audience to decode.

Prelim Task Mood Montage

Our task was to film a montage of short clips, and we were giving prompts to help decide a theme, and our montage was supposed to convey these themes to our audience. Our theme was secrecy and subterfuge. We created an initial storyboard which was where we brainstormed our ideas such as what we wanted to film in the clips, what angles we would use and what order they would be in. We were also told in the task brief that we should avoid making the montage into a story which has a star and a beginning so me and my partner decided to film a series of clips that each represented the theme. We tried to make it so they would flow together without making it a story.

Strengths:

  • Me and my partner worked well together, we shared similar ideas and it meant that we both knew exactly what to do when it came to filming and conveying the theme of secrecy.
  • We incorporated the use of transitions for the montage to work better
  • Using a variety of shot distances and making sure each shot was steadily filmed

Weaknesses:

  • Music choice was rushed so we didn’t have time to assess different options
  • There was some clips that we would have liked to include but they didn’t turn out great
  • The clips could have synced in with the music more, for example the clips could have changed on beat

In summary, the nature of this task helped me to put a lot of thought into which clips I knew I wanted to film and if they were necessary and would help convey the theme and the narrative and this skill will be very helpful in planning and shooting my music video when it comes to it. I will also have a better understanding of which types of shot help to set different types of scenes and atmospheres, for example a cut to close up shot allows the audience to see the facial expression of the character and it will help portray the emotion of the character.
