Question 2: How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text? FLIPSNACK AND SCREEN CASTIFY COMMENTARY

Component 1, Creative Critical Reflection 1

ScreenCastify commentary:

My magazine is a bright and fun pop music magazine which I named Deluxe. This is the mission statement I have come up with for my magazine: “Think of Deluxe and think of the magazine that gives you quality and quantity. A magazine that fulfils your desire for fun, fashion, festivals and much more! Immerse yourself in the music world in an energetic, vibrant, interactive way. The best way to keep up to date in the pop industry.”

I have chosen my brand values in line with my mission statement – they include accuracy, attention to detail, excellence, up to date communication and passion. These brand values will make my magazine distinct from others because It will keep the public updated on the latest music news and serves customers first. I have made sure my magazine is also of good quality to make it stand out further. My magazine is aimed mostly at young teenage girls. I used the website ‘Yougov.com’  to look at characteristics, demographics and psychographics of certain pop artists fans. I found out that the majority of the fans and supporters were women. This type of audience would buy my magazine because I have used bright colours, easy language, big pictures to attract attention and interest from this particular group of people. It would attract attention because bright colours are suited for my particular genre of pop as lots of colour is used in this genre to give of a fun, happy and energetic vibe. Easy to read dialogue will attract teens because there is not so much to read and it’s language which they relate with. I think my target audience will enjoy the Q&A as I have layed it out in a simple and easy to read way. Competitions will also attract the audience into reading further. I have also made sure to use MES which suits the genre of pop when taking my main star images to make them come across as more desirable because fashion which is similar and worn by fans grabs the attention of the audience. By my magazine being more desirable and eye-catching it makes the audience then take action by sharing my magazine by word of mouth and also sharing on social media and by recommendations. I have looked at the uses and gratification theory to get a better understanding of why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy needs. To satisfy my target audience’s needs I will include competitions and activities they can engage with so it’s not all passive. I have also included adverts which relate to my target audience to grab attention.

I would choose ‘Conde Nast’ to distribute my magazine because all the magazines they have distributed are very well known and very popular by the public. For example ‘vogue’ which is one of the biggest magazines and most heard of. If I chose this publisher I feel like my magazine would have a better shot at becoming the most popular and talked about. I would hope my magazine attracts famous pop stars. One of my ads is an album cover by Taylor Swift and the other is advertising a beats speaker. Both of these ads attract my target audience as they are both related to music and Taylor Swift is a very well known pop star who is liked by most of my target audience.

For my magazine to be successful in the digital world I am including specific links to the stars instagram’s so the reader can engage and look further into that artist’s work and music. Websites which link to certain festivals and tickets of particular stars. To link my magazine to the online world as well, News stories about particular celebrities will be used which can then be looked at in further detail online. Qr codes which link to tickets, online competitions, playlists/albums etc. By including Qr codes it allows readers to engage and look further into particular areas of my magazine. It is also a quick and easy thing to do. By linking it to social media it will allow even more people to potentially get to know about my magazine and also be able to interact. I will also include freebies and competitions to help gain more interest and attract a larger audience by using these. In recent studies it has been proven that magazine sales have fallen dramatically because of the digital world. In order for magazines to still be successful it is important to include the digital word inside magazines to grab the reader’s attention. Social media has a very big impact on marketing and is a very good way of  promotion. In order for my magazine to be successful, ads of it on social media platforms will help increase sales massively as it can be shared around quickly and efficiently. The audience’s participation and interaction play a big role in marketing as word of mouth really helps to sell a product. The more people that interact with a magazine the more successful it is likely to be. Putting my magazine digitally online and using a paywall may also be a good idea as the digital world is taking over and people are more likely to read something online than they are to go and buy a physical copy.

My image that uses mise-en-scene to communicate meaning

Component 3, Creative Critical Reflection 1, Preliminary Print Tasks

Made with Padlet
Each group  got allocated a music genre, my group got Punk.
We then made a mood board about Punk music and added images, key words, ideas, fonts etc to do with the genre. This mood board helped our group to get a good idea of the type of clothes/ makeup they wear and will also help me with making my own media because adding denotations and connotations has given me a deeper understanding.
We then had to get someone in our group to dress up like our music genre, we then took photos of him standing in different places and positions to see what worked best:

Here is a picture of some of the adjectives which were used to describe Brandon. Words like: confident, ignorant, dark.  Some of the words which were used were what we were trying to go for and represent him as.

Here is my final image from the shoot. This is my favourite image from the shoot because it represents our theme of punk really well with the clothing. I also like the angle which this photo is taken at, it has been taken from below looking up which gives the impression it’s from a fans point of view and he is performing on stage. The guitar implies he’s peforming. However to improve this image I would take it in darker lighting as punk is quite dark.

MES is very important to convey meaning because costumes, makeup, lighting, posture etc all help to build a picture and create meaning. From looking at MES it will help me in the future to make my own magazine as I now know that all these elements are very important when taking a photo.

Hello Media Studies

Component 1, Creative Critical Reflection 1

By taking GCSE Photography and Graphics I have gained creativity skills and research and planning skills. Both Graphics and Photography have improved my research skills because we had to do a lot of artist research and analysis. I also had to plan out layout of slides and pieces of work. My creativity skills have also improved greatly from taking both these subjects because they are very independent subjects and I was left mostly to come up with my own ideas. Graphics has also taught me basic technology skills such as web site design, design programs such as 2D design which I used a lot in graphics to make nets for packaging. IT has also helped me with technology skills.

I have also previously taken part in the business challenge which has helped me gain good organisation and time management skills as you have to be very organised when running your own business and timing is key. It has also helped me with transferrable skills such as teamwork skills because we had to work in a team and make sure all of our ideas were incorporated. It also improved my communication skills as we had to sell and promote our products to the public.

I’m really looking forward to A level media and I’m hoping to improve my creativity skills even further and get a better insight of the media in general.

I am a media prosumer

Component 1, Creative Critical Reflection 1

The media is the means of communication that reach or influence people widely. Media such as: newspapers, radio, Tv magazines, social medias, internet etc. These types of media are linked to personal identity, entertainment, information and social interaction.

Here is a collage of all the media I consume on a daily basis and gives a good idea of  what entertains me. After looking further into the media I consume I found out that the most I engage with is either for my own entertainment or for social interaction.

My favourite form of media is snapchat because it allows me to communicate quickly with friends at any point of the day. I use Snapchat purely for my own social interaction and entertainment. I also use Netflix quite a lot and usually watch more series than films because I like how episodes are short and more intense. One of my favourite series at the moment is Outer Banks which is a teen drama/ thriller.

By creating this collage I know have a deeper understanding of what media is. This knowledge will now help me with making my own music magazine as I now have a better idea of the different links to media. I now know for my magazine to be popular I need to ensure that my target audience are entertained, informed, able to socially interact and also opportunities for them to reinforce their own personal identity.
