THE SWEDE VIDEO

STORYBOARD:

For our class swede, we were all put into groups of two or three, and given a section from the ‘Don’t Stop’ music video to shoot and edit.
Me and Lucy were given from 1 minute & 58 seconds, to 2 minutes 25 seconds. Our section was to be challenging, mainly because of the visual effects
necessary to make the green superhero spin in the air (2 minutes 15 seconds).  Click the image to view our storyboard, and view the official video below.

THE SWEDE – OUR SECTION

Here is the final video of the section Lucy and I were recreating. Filming went very well, and the mise-en-scene and actors were great. Creating the green super hero spin in the air shot was
done in Adobe After Effect. We filmed our hero (Liam) spinning around on a computer chair, infront of a blue screen. We then filmed our thug actors falling over in order. The result I think
came out well and quite humorous. A few shots aren’t exact in terms of character positioning or camera movement, this was because we didn’t really include enough detail about camera directions and positions
in our storyboard. Doing so would have resulted in an exact match of all shots. View our edited section below.

THE FINAL SWEDE

Here is the final swede with all the edited sections from each group, all together in one video. I really like how it turned out, and enjoyed production and editing. Watch below.

 REFLECTION

  • Did I learn how the importance of planning techniques like storyboards and shot lists were on the day of the shoot? We left out some important detail in our storyboard. For example, when filming for some shots, we didn’t know which direction the camera was to move in. An improvement we could make would be to put arrows on the storyboard frames which indicated which direction the camera was to move in. Also the timing of each shot wasn’t included in some of shots on the storyboard. This would’ve been helpful so we knew how much time the actors had to perform in.
  • What things do I aim to achieve when planning your music video? It will be important for me to plan my music video storyboard with a lot of detail. Include information on which way the camera should move, include the timings of the shots, and make sure I have a clear idea of what I want the actors to do. Also planning locations will be important, as the setting of a music video plays a big part in the appeal. Finally, mise-en-scene, mainly costumes.
  • List (at least) three things the camera operator should be doing whilst filming performance. The camera operator should be using a tripod when necessary. Filming each shot twice or more to choose the best one, and avoid mistakes. And should know which direction and from what angle they’re shooting from.  The lighting should be carefully positioned so to not create unintentional silhouettes and have poor lighting.
  • How can the director get them to relax and have confidence in front of the camera in order to perform well? When directing performers, what did you learn was useful information to help them achieve the performance you wanted.  It’s important to make sure the actor knows exactly what they’re performing and how they’re doing it. Talking them through the storyboard and possibly acting out what you want them to do yourself could be helpful. Also, I found telling the actors to be free with the performance and not have to replicate the video exactly, helped them to relax a bit.
