Critical Reflection

Name: Annabelle Webb

How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?

How do your products represent social groups or issues?

How do your products engage with the audience?

Creating a branding is very important in the media industry because it allows the star to become recognisable in a unique fashion as well as helping to build a relationship with our target audience, eventually turning them into loyal customers. All of the products in a package work together to create a sense of significance and represent the artist. De Saussure would agree with this and say that having a clear signifier allows the products to be signified, therefore encouraging a preferred reading.

Evidence of our own products working together to create a sense of branding is highlighted when the star image of a quirky, rebellious and grunge character is represented across all products. These were key descriptors we formulated when creating our mission statement at the beginning, which helped us a lot to design the overall branding as it allowed us to deeply express eccentric themes.

Our mission statement reads “Our mission is to give the youth the confidence to stand out through our bold star. We want them to feel a freedom of expression in how they dress as well as also being able to flow freely while listening to our pioneering, alternate and infectious synth tracks”

This is emphasised in the music video through the star’s punk outfit and heavy makeup. Our star’s alternative style is reinforced through the social media page, where she can be seen playing music at the famous Trinity Lutheran Church, which is a place that is very popular amongst our psychographics of the youth punks. While the social media page connotes our star’s uniqueness it is also a juxtaposition because to our star’s social media on there she can be seen as both ordinary and extraordinary. For example, there are posts which show the star relaxing or having fun with friends. This is relevant to Dyer’s paradox of a star which states that the star needs to be relatable to the audience yet offer something that they do not have, in order to be deemed as ‘special’ or ‘interesting’.

We researched inspiration for our music video by watching indie synth pop videos. This helped us to gain ideas and grasp the very specific concept. I found that in order to meet the conventions we had to look at the repertoire of elements proposed by Lacey for our genre.  Lacey’s theory considers the repertoire of elements that work together to suggest media belongs to a particular genre. He doesn’t see genres as fixed but as a dynamic, which is changing over time. We noticed that the style of the music videos were often filled with bright colours, had very drastic high-key lighting, and included lots of different special effects. These features all help to sell the star’s image. Selling the star is one of the most important aspects of a rising artist and in order to do so we made sure that our star was represented well through the mise-en-scene.

When it came to producing our own video we incorporated the high-key lighting and played with the colours in the video by adding a pink and other various different coloured tints. Including special effects was something completely new to us but we knew that adding them would be worth it. These conventions will have an impact on the audience because the bright colour scheme and effects convey feelings of happiness, joy and contemptment. We represented our star through her costume as we opted for two main outfits. One was a more dull, office style outfit which contrasts the outfit change. The second outfit our star wore was a black lace dress, with a big fur leopard print coat and platform doc martens. The reason we included multiple different outfits is because we wanted to reinforce to the audience the star’s unique and eccentric personal style.

We used these conventions when we edited to the beat of the song as it engages the audience and creates excitement in a memorable way. Most videos from our genre are performance based, however we decided to challenge these conventions by creating a video that includes both performance and narrative. Despite this not being something that conforms to Altman’s blueprint, which says that different genre’s offer audiences different pleasures. We felt that including both would attain Altman’s theory because having the opportunity to express conventions through both allows us to clearly represent the expectations of our genre to the audience. We c

hose to challenge conventions because we found that in the music industry, producers make the same old material without being adventurous and in order to stand out it is important to break the norms.

Representing our star in a significant way is essential when it comes to creating a successful promotion package. Our star is extraordinary and recognised for her quirky and eccentric style, therefore it is very important that this is highlighted through our digipak.

Our star clearly conveys Dyer’s ideas about the paradox of a star when she is seen on the digipak acting both ordinary and extraordinary. For example, she is exemplified as extraordinary on the social media page when she is invited to play the keyboard at a famous church, the same image is then used on the digipak. Additionally, her ordinary side is highlighted through the behind the scene shots from the digipak photoshoot on the social media page. These photos are significant because they allow the star to be represented as more authentic, therefore creating a stronger relationship with her audience because they trust her. Through our digipak we wanted to express our star’s character as light hearted and buoyant. To evidence this we included what Barthes would call narrative codes. This is evident when our star is photographed behind a black background with high-key lighting allowing the audience to focus on the mise-en-scene. She is wearing multiple layers of jewellery along with a bold, pink skirt. This semic code is significant as it signifies that our star’s style is unique to a distinct group of people who have an eccentric style of fashion. The way we photographed our star is important because she is holding her hand up to the camera which appears mysterious and draws the audience in, this is known as the enigma code. However, it can also be interpreted as a cultural code because she may seem as though she is hiding from the paparazzi. The idea that she is masking herself highlights her fame.

Engaging with the audience is especially important when it comes to creating a successful social media page. This is due to the fact that it provides us with insights into how well our content is resonating with the audience. This information helps us in the future to optimise posts or improve our products and services.

Designing a social media page for our star gives us plenty of opportunities to engage with the audience. Hall’s theory of the active audience tells us the importance of encoding media so that the audience can easily decode it and understand the preferred reading message. If the demographics and psychographics do not receive the preferred reading of the text and instead get the oppositional reading then this could become controversial and result in the star receiving backlash.

Therefore when it comes to our social media page we prioritised spreading clear messages that resonate with our star’s character. Our social media page reinforces Blumer and Katz uses and gratification theory. For example, opportunities of social interaction between the star and the audience can be seen through the caption on our post about uk tour dates where our star is asking fans whereabouts they want her to go next. Another form of social interaction on our page is when we announce a giveaway that fans can enter by liking, commenting and reposting. It is also important to keep our target audience entertained, which is why we released a sneak peek of the music video, this also helped to keep fans thrilled. We always ensured that our audience were informed by releasing information about tour dates, the date of our new album, new merch and any other significant news. The audience learns about the star’s own personal identity through a post where she can be seen having fun with her friends. This shows the star’s genuine side and allows the audience to see how authentic she is.

Final Draft- Music Video

Here is our final draft for our music video ‘Melodrama’ by Annabelle Anduga.

I am very happy with the final product and the changes we have made such as changing the colour of some of the clips to black and white, in order to emphasise their dullness before the outfit change. We were conventional and followed Lacey’s repertoire of elements, which can be seen through the mise-en-scene of our star. For example, in the individual clips of her at the beginning of the video, her outfit is very grunge and she has big punk hair and gothic makeup. We edited to the beat to the song as it engages the audience and creates excitement.

During our research we found that most indie synth pop music videos tend to be performance based however we decided to challenge these conventions by including both performance and narrative clips. This is not something that conforms to Altman’s theory about different genre’s offering audiences different pleasures. Despite this we were confident that including both would still attain to Altman’s theory because having the opportunity to express conventions through both allows us to clearly represent the expectations of our genre to our target audience. Challenging conventions is important because we found that in the music industry producers make the same old material and in order to stand out, you should break norms. Overall, I feel as though we have corrected expressed the indie synth pop genre through this music video.

Final Digipak and Reflection

Here is our final draft for our digipak ‘Melodrama’ by Annabelle Anduga.

I am very pleased with the final product because it significantly conveys the synth indie pop genre. I feel that the change of photos from draft 3 suit the style much more and I feel that if we were to survey our peers again, nearly 100% of them would guess the genre correctly. Improvements we have made from previous drafts include, moving the first image of our star double page spread more to the right so her arm isn’t cut off. While, I liked the lyrics that were on the double page spread we found that with the aditional picture it looked too much and we are aiming for a more minimialistic, modern look so we took them off.

Overall, I felt we did a good job of working together to make improvements for the better and I am very happy with the outcome of our digipak.

Social Media Page Draft 1

Above is our teacher’s screencastify of our first draft for our social media page.

Feedback she gave us includes:

  • Add a butterfly to the digipak
  • Include links for merch, promotions and discounts
  • Release tour dates and link them
  • Add more stories
  • Cross media convergence, her song could be used in a movie
  • Have countdown stories for album release
  • Include clips from the music video

Reflecting on my own work is an important part of improvement so I have filled out a guideline of some of the expectations our teachers expect us meet with our social media page. Here it is:

Pls click to see pdf version

Focusing forward, in our next draft we are going to make sure to include some form of synergy or cross media convergence whether it is a collabaration with a company or Annabelle’s song being played as a soundtrack in a movie. We are also going to aim towards posting more stories so that the audience can get excited for the album release and have a story counting down the days left. We have also planned to have a photoshoot where Annabelle will be on a podcast, which will help to reinforce her interaction with fans.

Digipak Draft 3

Here is my 3rd draft for the digipak. We used the feedback that our teacher gave us in the screencastify to make the following changes:

  • Change the picture on the double inside spread to something with more colour
  • Used different filters and colours to give it a grainy, more vintage look
  • Changed the layout of the song lyrics for the inside so they’re only on one side rather than scattered across two

Presented above is our digipak in printed form, which is very helpful because it has allowed us to see how visually appearing our album cover is. Now that we’ve seen it in person, we would like to make changes to the placement of the album name of the front cover because it is too high, and as you can see from the picture it is slightly cut off.

Additionally, we’d also like to change the positing of our artist on the inside page and move her more to the left because her hand is cut off in the middle. Another thing we noticed is that the lyrics on the middle page spread are hidden and unable to be read so we name to move them about, as well as making the lyrics bigger because they are also quite hard to read at the moment. Finally, looking at the back cover in person, it looks quite plain so in our next draft we are going to work on adding to that.

In order to gain opinions on what genre people think our album is, we asked some of our peers to take a look and rate which one they feel it is.

As you can see in the chart above, most of our peers felt that the genre of our album is Indie Synth Pop. This scored much higher than any of the other catorgries, with a few voting for edm which is still good to see because our music is a part of that genre too. We found this feedback helpful because it showed us that we had done a good job of expressing a repotoire of elements through our digipak.

Timeline and Marketing Ideas

Social media marketing is crucial when it comes to promoting an artist, especially those who are new and wanting to get their foot in the game, specifically guerilla and intergrated advertising. Above is our timeline that we created in order to keep in track with everything we want to post.

We have incorperated AIDA into our marketing timeline through the eigth post where we plan to post about our merch, promoting it. This will help us when we create our own instagram account because now we have inspiration and don’t have to struggle with ideas for our artist, making it less time consuming and confusing.

Digipak Draft 2

Here is our 2nd draft for our digipak. Some of the changes we have made include adding inside panes, changing the placement of the album name and encourparating the artists name on the front cover.

Screen casifitify of our teacher giving us feedback:

Improvements to be made for our next draft:

  • Change the font of ‘Annabelle Anduga’ on the front cover
  • Inlcude the name of the title ‘Melodrama’ on the back cover
  • The colour pallette for the inside page is too bland- more colour is needed
  • More shaping and layering needs to be done on the inside page

Personally, I agree with all of the advice that the teacher has given us. I feel as though going forward with our next draft I want to work on the inside page in partucilar because I think that it looks too plain and a pop of colour and some better editing would make it so much better.

Audience Interaction with SMP- an Anaylsis

In order for us to create our own social media page it is important to understand all of the technical conventions that should be included. We gained an understanding of this by anaylising the features of La Roux’s instagram, as seen in the screen casifiy above.

This helped us to achieve audience engagement, which is one of the elements of AIDA (attention, interest, disire and call to action). Through looking at her page we saw the Uses & Gratification Theory by Bulmer and Katz and also recognised that the star has a lot of intergrated advertising. La Roux enjoys promoting her new music by posing in the car or even by the fire place.

Social Media Page Terminology

Before we go on to make a social media of our own, for our star it is important that we understand all of the different, technical conventions on a social media platform. I learnt about all of these by anaylsing Lady Gaga’s instagram page. I chose to look at hers in particular because she is a popular star from the electric genre that we are using. From studying her content I noticed that she has a big marketing campaign and also became aware that she has a specific target audience that she markets. Lada Gaga promotes products such as champagne and perfume, which I feel is targeted towards mature females because those are the types of consumers that would be most interested in these products.

Focusing forward, creating this slide has helped me to come up with ideas for my own social media page. For example, similarly to Lady Gaga’s page where she has highlights specifically for BLM, this has inspired me to consider creating a story highlight advocating for issues on our star’s social media page because I aim for our star to be woke.
