Draft 4 – Peer Feedback

Above is draft four of my music video. After taking into account my feedback I can visually see that the music video flows fluently and all the gaps are filled. After adding the improvements from my feedback my music video looks much more professional and enticing.

Below is my peer feedback I received from another media student:

Positives:
  • Variety of shots
  • Good lighting
  • Locations and outfits fit the theme of the video
  • Starting shot is a good intro but could make it less shaky by using effects
  • Good low angle shots.
Negatives:
  • Some of the lip syncing at the start aren’t in time with the music
  •  Could improve the quality of the jump cuts
  • Could add in more transitions to make the video more fluent
  • Could add in more shots of the girls to break it up more so it’s not singing the whole time.
  • Maybe zoom in to have more close ups

Below is the feedback Summer received from another media student:

Positives:
  • I really like some of the timing within the shots and how you encapsulate the summer feel, which matches your genre well.
  •  I feel that you have successfully used a varied shot of angles and shots, creating a great momentum and flow to your music video.
  • The mise-en-scene is achieved excellently, and perfectly emphasizes the summer vibe.
Negatives:
  • I think that some of the shots feel slightly out of time, especially at places with the lip-sync, I feel with some tinkering this could be improved.

Lastly here is the feedback that Zoe received from another media student:

 

Focusing forward, we are happy with how far our music video has come from the start. We appreciate all the feedback we have received and will take the comments into account. We are still keen to add a vintage, retro feeling filter as we think this will make it all come together, represents our genre better and be a fun, incising way of splitting our lip syncing clips from the montage. We will use the filter to make the montage clips appear to be in a retro movie vibe, as if they are looking back to the summer when they were having fun with their friends. This will help our audience to feel connected to us as they will relate to missing their childhood summers and will feel nostalgic.

 

Draft 3

 

For our draft three we were lucky enough to get some help and feedback from two men that work at Specsavers who specialise in editing and filming. In our song ‘Chillin’ by Buffalo Huddleston there was a long rap verse which we weren’t too sure what to do with. We knew that lip syncing over the rap would be difficult to make look professional as our model would’ve had to learn it word for word in a short space of time which seemed too far fetched. Therefore, we planned to put our montage clips over the rap. However, we struggled to find enough footage to cover this, and with the rap included our song was nearly five minutes long. So we would’ve needed much more footage to be able to cover this.

Luckily for us, the men from Specsavers suggested cutting the rap out and helped us experiment with it in a way that the song still flowed and it didn’t sound like there was a part of the song missing. As a group we successfully managed to cut the rap out without the change in verses sounding too abrupt.

Mrs Cobb did a screen castify going through and watching our music video. She gave us some useful feedback to improve out work.

Here is her feedback:

  • Shorten the first clip of driving past vistas as it is too short and gets boring
  • Fill in the rest of the blank screens with our montage footage
  • Zoom into the boys lip syncing to create close ups and more of a connection between them and the audience
  • Add a filter around the borders of the clips to create a vintage, retro film feel
  • Play around with the exposure in some clips, as some days we shot it was sunnier than others so some clips are brighter than the others.
  • Clean up the jump cut as it could be much clearer and looks like only two jumps instead of three
  • In some of our clips when our models are moving towards the camera, we could zoom in on the clips as the models move closer.
  • Edit to the beat more
  • Add effects and filters to make it look more professional

Draft 2

 

What has worked:

  • For our Draft 2 we made sure that our models knew the lyrics fluently so we were able to match up the lip syncing to the lyrics better.
  • We were able to edit some of our clips to the beat and transition into different clips in time with the music
  • Our montage is now coming together from all of our shoots. We took into account the MES and used many different locations and costumes to keep our audience intrigued and on their toes.
  • We like how the lighting was bright and sunny which reflects well on the meaning of the song and our genre.

What we need to improve:

  • We still have some gaps which we need to fill in for the montage.
  • We need to add in some narrative of the girls earlier on in the video and make the girls and boys evenly shown throughout the video.
  • We need to neaten up the jump cut as it is not clear that it jumps three times
  • Add in more close ups, especially of the boys singing the lyrics.

Teachers comments/feedback:

  • Need to incorporate more close ups of the models singing to make a connection with the audience.
  • Need to reduce the lengths of some of the lip syncing clips and switch between different locations more often.
  • During the opening scene cut out the end section of the clip where there is the car park as it ruins the atmosphere.
  • Need to show the girls earlier on in the music video so that they are well-known and their appearances are fluent.

Focusing forward, we now have lots of feedback to improve on in finalising our music video to make it the best that it can be. After looking at the assessment criteria and receiving our teachers feedback we know what we need to incorporate into our video. We will first focus on filling the gaps and adding in all the features we have learnt from our feedback. We will also add in more vintage and rustic looking filters to make the clips represent our genre and star image better.

Video Narrative Photo Board

As a group Zoe, summer and I made a video narrative story board in preparation for our second shoot. We did this to ensure that we didn’t forget any shots and could see the aesthetic that we’re going for by including pictures. In doing this we remembered to take into account the narrative sense, film to edit, sequencing, narrative structure, narrative themes, cut to close up, reaction shots and a variety of shot distances. In including all these different shots and conventions it will help us to tell our story and portray our star image in a certain way to our audience.

Production Meeting Agenda – Shoot 2

In preparation for our narrative shoot Zoe, Summer and myself constructed our Product Meeting Agenda. As this shoot is for our narrative our costumes and overall mes en scene are really important so we made sure to make our outfit plans clear on this document including pictures of the aesthetic that we are going for to ensure nothing is forgotten. We have shared this document with our models so that everyone is on the same page and there is no confusion with locations, times, costumes, props etc. This document will help us to make our shoot run smoothly, as it will make us organised and therefore time efficient.

Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

Following up from our first shoot for our music video we edited as many clips together that we could to make our first rough cut.

Things that went well;

  • We synced up the lyrics to our models lip-syncing well
  • Since it was all of our first time editing we managed to embed the clips onto the sound track
  • The shoot day was perfect weather for our clips and the summery vibe reflects perfectly to our genre
  • the location we chose and style of our clips so far represent our genre well
  • We got a lot of footage of the chorus of the songs using different shot distances and angles. This will work well as part of our song will be a montage so the main parts that will be performance will be the chorus.
  • Our Mes En Scene all came together well and represents our star image perfectly.

Targets for improvement;

  • our models didn’t know the whole song throughout so we haven’t got clips of good lip-syncing throughout the whole song which made editing difficult as we have some gaps throughout the song.
  • The speed of our models lip-syncing didn’t always match the speed of the music
  • some of our clips were slightly shaky, we can improve these clips in Premier using the warp stabilizing tool
  • After editing and going through all the clips we realised that most of our close up shots were blurry and cut our some of the model at times so our draft one is mainly mid shots and long shots. therefore in our next shoot in a couple of days we will focus of getting these shot distances and varieties of different angles.
  • We were short of time on our shoot day so didn’t have time to go to different locations to show different scenery and make it more appealing to the eye. We will go to more locations on our second shoot.
  • Avoiding getting anything in the background that shouldn’t be there. For example;  camera bag, other people, cars

Product Meeting Agenda – Shoot 1

In preparation for our shoot making production meeting agendas keeps us organised and calm. In these documents we include; where we will be, who we will be with, locations, props, costumes, camera skills and our contact details. Making this ensures that nothing will be forgotten and everyone in our group knows exactly what is going on. We share these documents with our models so that they know where they will need to be, what may be asked of them, what they will be wearing and if they need to bring anything along with them. We can also easily share this with our teachers so that they know exactly where to find us and can easily contact us if necessary. All of these things are vital for a successful photoshoot as it will help us manage our time and not miss any of these essential checks as every detail counts.
