Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

Following up from our first shoot for our music video we edited as many clips together that we could to make our first rough cut.

Things that went well;

  • We synced up the lyrics to our models lip-syncing well
  • Since it was all of our first time editing we managed to embed the clips onto the sound track
  • The shoot day was perfect weather for our clips and the summery vibe reflects perfectly to our genre
  • the location we chose and style of our clips so far represent our genre well
  • We got a lot of footage of the chorus of the songs using different shot distances and angles. This will work well as part of our song will be a montage so the main parts that will be performance will be the chorus.
  • Our Mes En Scene all came together well and represents our star image perfectly.

Targets for improvement;

  • our models didn’t know the whole song throughout so we haven’t got clips of good lip-syncing throughout the whole song which made editing difficult as we have some gaps throughout the song.
  • The speed of our models lip-syncing didn’t always match the speed of the music
  • some of our clips were slightly shaky, we can improve these clips in Premier using the warp stabilizing tool
  • After editing and going through all the clips we realised that most of our close up shots were blurry and cut our some of the model at times so our draft one is mainly mid shots and long shots. therefore in our next shoot in a couple of days we will focus of getting these shot distances and varieties of different angles.
  • We were short of time on our shoot day so didn’t have time to go to different locations to show different scenery and make it more appealing to the eye. We will go to more locations on our second shoot.
  • Avoiding getting anything in the background that shouldn’t be there. For example;  camera bag, other people, cars

Product Meeting Agenda – Shoot 1

In preparation for our shoot making production meeting agendas keeps us organised and calm. In these documents we include; where we will be, who we will be with, locations, props, costumes, camera skills and our contact details. Making this ensures that nothing will be forgotten and everyone in our group knows exactly what is going on. We share these documents with our models so that they know where they will need to be, what may be asked of them, what they will be wearing and if they need to bring anything along with them. We can also easily share this with our teachers so that they know exactly where to find us and can easily contact us if necessary. All of these things are vital for a successful photoshoot as it will help us manage our time and not miss any of these essential checks as every detail counts.

Star Image- The Performer

The key purpose of a music video is to promote the artist and represent the specific star image to the audience. How the star image is conveyed will determine the likeableness of the star which will lead to a bigger audience and overall success of the product.

As a group we researched through social media platforms eg. instagram comments, tweets and posts and we discovered how Buffalo Huddleston represent their star image to their audience. We found that their star image holds a natural, genuine and laid back vibe.

Moving forward we will work to constructing our digipak, social media page and music video in a way that our star image is coherent across the products. We will do this be carefully looking into the conventions and repertoire of elements that our audience will be engaged by. We have built a costume for our performance that represents our genre of folk pop nicely and will edit our work in a way that fits perfectly.

Final Pitch to teacher

Once we had finalised our plans for our narrative and performance parts of our music video, we went through our ideas with our teacher and filmed our discussion. This talk was very helpful to us as Mrs Cobb gave us some additional ideas and told us some risks or challenges that we might have to look out for.

6 positives that we came away with;

  • We have access to a lifeguard and a firefighter so we are able to do a scene in a pool and a bonfire scene for our narrative.
  • We have access to many models who are willing to participate
  • our ideas are all achievable
  • We have a good variety of scenes planned to keep it interesting and exciting
  • Mrs Cobb likes the Mes En Scene idea of the performers
  • Good narrative ideas

6 targets and aspects to consider;

  • Add instruments such as ukuleles and bongo drums to the scene around the campfire
  • Change our sea swimming scene to a pool party scene as the sea has risks and safety precautions
  • Make sure to get a variety of different shot distances and angles
  • Remember to set specific days in our Sumer holidays dedicated to filming
  • Complete risk assessments for our pool, fire and cliff scenes
  • Have three main settings throughout the video

Focusing forward we have come out of this discussion with a secure plan that we will try our best to execute well.

Conventional Shots and Narratives for my genre

To explore and identify key filming conventions and performance styles for our genre Summer, Zoe and I created a Padlet, where we analysed the popular pop song ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ by Paloma Faith. We unpicked various camera angles shown in the performance of her music video and explored the significance the different angles had.

This has taught me the importance of using a variety of shots and angles and a repertoire of elements. Every shot has a meaning, in this instance the angles were more simple and had a slower pace of edit which reflects back to the Star Image as her character in the music video conveys a melancholy feeling. Deconstructing this music video also taught me the significance of the five most powerful elements of cinematography; Exposure, Composition, Camera Movement, Camera Angles and the use of Colour. Moving forward into the making of my music video I will be sure to incorporate these elements and convections into my work.

For our genre of pop\folk pop the conventional narratives focus of relationships with friends, family and lovers. This genre also focuses on representing the Star Imagine as independent, strong, powerful and free willed. Moving forwards into the creation of our own music video we will be sure to construct our narrative and and illustrate our performance in a way where the Star Image is conveyed in a way that would be expected to see in a folk pop music video so that our work reaches the right audience and what they would be looking to see.

Final Song Choice

As a group me, Summer and Zoe made a slide of our group pitch. We listened to each others ideas and made a narrative that consists of all our ideas. We chose the song ‘Chillin’ by Buffalo Huddleston as it fits our aesthetic and the song is written about Guernsey so will fit our idea of a beach montage for our narrative perfectly.

We created a plan taking into account Mes En Scene, locations, lip syncing and what narrative would represent our star image best for our genre.
