This is my tour poster using indesign, photoshop and my original Mise En Scene image to show how fonts, colours, language and images can all help create a narrative and convey a my punk genre in print.

My self assessment on my punk tour poster:

This will help me in future to create my music magazine because I now know how to use InDesign and photoshop to make my magazine and understand the importance of layout, colour scheme, images and all the conventions and denotations that the poster or magazine cover should consist of in order to be successful to your specific target audience.

We were allocated a specific edition of an up to date magazine. I did the popular Billboard media magazine. my aim was to recreate the layout and to recap on the main conventional design features of a magazine cover using InDesign. We used the InDesign app to find the right fonts, sizing, colours, typefaces, proportions and placing and sizing the image to do our best to lay out the cover with a conventional layout.

In using InDesign I found these parts challenging:

  • positioning the images and text
  • finding colours to match the magazine cover

Parts of InDesign that I found easy

  • sizing the text
  •  finding the fonts as similar as I could to match the magazine.

Learning how to use InDesign will help me for my future posts because I now understand how to use each feature enabling my to make my music magazine to a high standard.

The Camera Talks

The camera talks. For this post we were put in groups and took photos around the school in attempt to tell a story through our photography. To do this we took into account the distance, angle and framing to demonstrate how the camera can make meaning. We used each other as models and used Mise En Scene with the facial expressions, body language, proxemics and gesture to portray the emotions of the model.

I now understand the importance of different camera angles, framing and distance, and how they can show emotions and tell stories of the model. I also now know that Mes Un Scene and camera are a powerful partnership for representing an idea, a narrative.

My image that uses MES to make meaning

Made with Padlet

For this post we were allocated in groups with a music genre. Ours being punk rock. We researched the genre and investigated Mise En Scene to explore the different facial expressions, make up, costumes, props, hair, lighting ect. By researching the genre of music it allowed us to understand the characteristics of punk rock and how they are represented to the audience. My researched demonstrates that punk rock connotes rebellious behavior, gothic style and loud personalities.

This post taught me that in music genres it is important to consider what each thing represents and connote and that every detail is important in order to portray the imagine of the genre to the specific audience.

We asked the audience to tell us the connotations of our punk model. They said that the connotations were: intimidating, scary and rebellious. This shows that our costume, make up and props were successful as they signified the genre of punk well as the audience were able to identify the genre easily and described the model using the connotations that fit with punk rock.

As a result of the audience’s feedback I knew that I was on the right lines with representing the genre of punk in my poster.

A Textual Analysis of a Tour Poster

I now understand that in a media text everything is there for a reason. For this post I focused on understanding that the denotations all have connotations. I explored the connotations in this tour poster and the impact they have on the reader. For example his big smile and messy hair signifies his warm inviting personality and presents him as a fun, confident character. Also the use of eye contact in the poster makes the audience feel more comfortable and connected to the artist.

I now know that when I create media I need to think carefully about all the aspects of my work and how the font, colours, clothing etc impact the message of the media text.
