CCR Essay

How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?

How do your products represent social groups or issues?

How do your products engage with the audience?

Compiling a mission statement for our artists, before producing the final products, allowed us to create a successful brand image, following coherent and consistent elements and themes throughout each product. Freya’ metanarrative of a unique and exquisite character was portrayed throughout all three products, helping our target audience to immediately recognise the star’s brand within any product produced.

We produced our package for our artist and ensured all three products fit with our mission statement which we used as a foundation for the overarching brand image for our products; ‘ Freya offers a multi-genre vibe into the pop world. Mixing R&B soul, pop and electronica, Freya’s emotive atmosphere and tones give an ethereal and quirky performance style, providing fans with an ocular kaleidoscope with a multi-coloured and freaky aura. This new album ‘Faces In The Crowd’ features the new hit song ‘There Isn’t Much’ along with the most unique new songs. This extraordinary album is destined to rise to top of the charts, connecting emotionally with fans all across the world, leaving everyone to want more’

A coherent and consistent brand image is essential when representing a star image and creating a brand package for them, therefore it is important to portray our mission statement within all our products. The products linked towards the brand and followed a theme, being intelligible, in order to allow the audience to easily recognise it and therefore link it to the star image and R&B/pop/electronica music genre. Within the media I  wanted to display our star as ‘emotive, ethereal, quirky, freaky and unique’ as seen in our mission statement. All three of our products; music video, digipak and social media page demonstrate cohesive designs and elements to portray this mysterious atmosphere linked to our star’s character. It was therefore imperative that we used the various forms of media language to appropriate to the varying platforms e.g fonts, camera movement, designs, which were all designed to convey the same star image and genre When  creating our brand it was important to follow, as Lacey states, the repertoire of elements for the R&B/pop/electronica music genre, however it was also possible to challenge these technical conventions to make our products and brand ‘the same but different’ giving it a unique look. To gain our preferred reading (Hall) from our audience, as producers we need to create a clear meaning through our images and media texts so that our audience can denote them and gather certain connotations which in this case would be an ethereal atmosphere. De Saussaure describes these elements as the signifier and the signified which both contribute to the audience gaining our preferred reading.

One of the main ways we portrayed our star was to represent her as having a kaleidoscopic and exquisite nature, connoting her classy and mystifying character. These attributes were evidenced in all three of our products. The music video featured a party scene, giving the impression of a drunken feeling through the use of special effects giving an edgy and trippy feeling. As well as this bright colours and a fast pace of edit was used throughout to highlight the energetic feeling. Throughout the digipak this ambience is also portrayed through the use of photography and graphic design. The bright colours featured across the digipak connote an fun and energetic feel along with the bold sans serif fonts connoting the mysterious approach through the use of a ghosting effect on the front pane. The star’s expressionless tone creates an uneasy feeling, with the use of direct mode of address to help entice and hook the audience into the image. ‘Eyes’ are a common theme throughout the brand package, which is seen with the middle of the digipak. The use of effects and digital design has enabled the eye to project a ‘psychedelic’ and ‘freaky’ aura.

The SMP also uses this brand image of an ‘eye’ within the star’s merchandise and events. The UK tour has been named ‘all eyes on you’ following the common theme, making the brand coherent. The paradox of the star, proposed by Dyer, shows both an ordinary and extraordinary feeling. Ordinary is shown throughout her loving nature and interactive personality with her fans showing how much she cares for them whereas her extraordinary nature is revealed through the exciting announcements, collaborations and events that have been made apparent on her Instagram page. The social media page highlighted Barthes idea of narrative codes; a semic code is seen throughout the kaleidoscopic setting within the images connoting an ethereal aura towards the artist. In addition to this a enigma code is used throughout the social media page with the use of the other two products being featured, creating suspense towards the release of the artists new album, ‘Faces In The Crowd’- again highlighting on a common theme of eyes watching you. The Instagram page also follows the coherent theme of bright colours similarly seen within the other products in order to portray the quirky and unique character as stated within our mission statement.

To gain an understanding for the chosen genre of our music video it was vital to conduct relevant research of the typical conventions seen in Pop/R&B music videos. From doing this we were quickly able to gather a wider range of knowledge from analysing  professional music videos of what our audience would expect to see. We noticed that our chosen genre  includes both narrative and performance aspects, commonly having a typical theme of relationships and love.  Throughout the process of analysing videos we were also able to highlight the common use of MES; bright statement costumes, low & high key lighting for different scenes, emotional performances, bright makeup and high energy dance performances .

These  are all considered to be the ‘repertoire of elements’ within the Pop/R&B music genre, a theory proposed by Lacey, which establishes that there are always common elements we see throughout similar media text so that the audience accept it. Altman would also argue that these elements are the blueprint for a successful and conventional Pop/R&B music video. A particular video I analysed within my research helped me to establish the genre further, ‘Dusk Till Dawn’ by Zayn & Sia  heavily featured a narrative focussing on love and relationships whilst also including performance based footage with amplified moments..

We chose to follow the common technical conventions of form  to allow the contract (audience) to identify the genre through two elements, semantic and syntactic, suggested by Altman. Their shaped expectations of the text will give them enjoyment when met, helping to avoid the potential for the audience to reject the text. Some of these elements included having both narrative and performance sections, lip syncing, editing to the beat and a variety of shot distances and angles in order to follow the repertoire of elements for our chosen genre. Researching the conventional shots helped to understand what footage we needed to film before even starting to produce our music video; close ups, mid shots, long shots, peds etc. However in order to make our music video ‘the same but different’ and stand out from others within the industry we decided to slightly develop the typical conventions but not to the point where the target audience would not be happy with the product. We followed the theme of love however with a slight twist, the narrative highlighted the characters misery and loss of a past relationship and even though she could have everything she could want from others perspective, inside she was not happy. This does not directly link to the typical love stories most music videos of this genre feature but instead allow a slightly different approach whilst still keeping the product conventional. As well as this the costumes and makeup were challenged as we wanted to portray our star image in a classy,  elegant  and extraordinary way whilst still keeping a fun nature. Researching the star, Emeli Sande, helped us to understand how star images and their metanarratives are connoted within the media. Therefore our star was dressed in a long black dress with natural hair and makeup, portraying her in a sufficient and put together way helping her to be seen as a role model. Our music video followed a linear structure whilst including amplified moments, such as the party scene, due to the narrative nature of the video, helping to keep our audience engaged and hooked, minimising confusion. We feel these elements would be a welcoming addition to the typical conventions seen in other professional music videos and our target audience would accept the text even with the slight challenges.

Representing our R&B/pop star in an enthusiastic, playful, mysterious way within all of the products was vital in order to create a successful package for our star and brand. Our star is known for her ethereal vibe and atmosphere with her metanarrative connoting a classy, edgy character. This clearly evidences the extraordinary aspect of Dyer’s paradox of the star as she displays extreme opposite personalities.  This is seen in particular on the social media page where the star is seen as caring and interactive towards her audience portraying her as ordinary but also extraordinary with her talent and performance skills being showcased..

Within our digipak I wanted to represent our star image as an exquisite and mystifying character to hook the audience. Therefore I developed the technical conventions,  repertoire of elements and the use of media language of fonts, colours, images and print design within the digipak to match this representation. The star is photographed using a close up image of her face, using direct mode of address helping the audience to feel a sense of connection towards the star whilst signifying a compassionate and connecting personality. De Saussure suggests that these elements are known as the signifier and signified, in other words denotation and connotations which enable the audience to understand the image and understand what certain media language (codes) represent.  The lighting is soft yet has a cool tone helping to connote that mystifying energy towards the audience, clearly showing a symbolic code (Barthes). The back cover of the digipak reveals a vibrant ‘wacky’ image giving a more artistic approach towards the album. These colours may also display, as Barthes says, a semic code, referring to the connotation that the bright colours and patterns denote the star’s playful character, helping the audience to to read through their understanding of narratives and learn more about the star image through the use of design. The sans-serif prominent font highlights the importance of the star within the music industry, whilst also connoting the ethereal approach through the use of a ghosting effect, seen on the front of the digipak.  The font is contemporary and youthful helping to reach her target audience demographic and connect with them. This would be, as Barthes suggests, a cultural code implying mystery and an ethereal nature; however in other cultures this may be decoded differently due to headscarf seen on the star and may portray a Middle Eastern vibe. This can be applied to Hall’s theory that different audiences will decode products in different ways due to their cultural backgrounds, therefore the producer may not always achieve their preferred reading. Due to this encoding a message to an active audience may not always be successful in some circumstances. All these elements mentioned above have allowed me to represent the R&B/pop star in our product in the way that we hoped for and have gathered our preferred reading.

As a producer it is vital to identify your audience and follow from this to create engagement in order to create a successful brand package and market your star image as your preferred reading. Audience engagement is the main aim in any marketing and advertising campaigns, as without their engagement the success of the product will be reduced.  In other words audiences need producers and producers need audiences in order for any product to work, it is a very reliant relationship between the two. Our audience demographics are young adults, primarily females, and the psychographics include having a loving nature wanting equality and fun.

A typical way to reach audience engagement is through the use of online social media platforms, where you can reach mass audiences in little time. Our social media page, produced on Instagram, promoting our R&B/pop star was the perfect place to create audience engagement and an active platform for the fans of ‘Freya’.  Hall describes that to encode any media text with the expected signs and symbols is extremely important so that the target audience can decode the text and understand the message. He explained that in order for us as producers to gather our preferred reading  we need to use the correct signs and symbols to reach this as well as appropriate media language to communicate with them.

Therefore to attain our preferred reading we ensured that we were informed by Blumler and Katz would describe as the essential elements to engage audiences within a media text. These elements are entertainment, information, personal identity and social interaction. Our SMP created entertainment through the use of posts and stories, a bright colour palette and use of both photography and graphic design helps to entertain the audience keeping them hooked with a sense of excitement. One post in particular that created entertainment was our teaser trailer for the new music video, including a snippet of the video, helping the audience to be hooked in and excited for the release. Information was given out to the audience through the use of constant updates of what the star is up to e.g tour dates, magazine appearances, collaborations, charity collaborations, teasers, promos and concerts  as well as direct links e.g website in bio, helping the audience to gain easy access to extra information. Personal identity was also created through merchandise, when audiences purchase items relating to the star this will create a sense of identity and belonging. Lastly social interaction was encouraged as the star was constantly engaging with the audience through Q&A’s, comments and personal direct language. This reflects Shirky’s theory that the interaction between the audience and producer is a two way communication, allowing the audience to distribute their ideas and opinions within the media due to the advancement of the online world, making them prosumers.  All of the examples mentioned above were designed and produced in order to maximise the engagement such as likes, comments, clicks and reviews by our target audience to keep the star highlighted within the media and create successful products.

AIDA was considered within our social media page; attention, interest, desire and action. These elements all help to create audience engagement and we used them through the use of blueprints, design, bright colour palette, direct language, creating a role model and the use of products which the audience can purchase. The page followed a coherent theme creating a ‘brand’ for our star, following an ethereal and mysterious atmosphere and character. This can be seen within the images, following statement outfits, patterns and ‘vibes’ within an image. This also helps us as producers to reach our preferred reading (Halls), of our star’s character towards our targeted audience.

Social Media Page Final Draft

Below is our final draft of our social media page for our multi-genre artist ‘FREYA’. We believe our final product has portrayed our ideal brand package and mission statement we hoped for. We will be able to gain our preferred reading from our target audience due to the technical conventions and media language used throughout the social media page. We chose instagram as our ideal place for our artist to reach their audience as their demographic is young adults who would regulary use this social media platform. The page uses content and has a total of 19 posts using gifs, videos, photos, realms and teasers in order to create a snese of axcitment throughout.

Marketing techniques are vital in order to reach new audiences and market your star. We have used synergy through collaborations with brands such as Urban Outftters and VOGUE, allowing the star to gain new audiences. Within this collaboration the audience is also offered discount codes showing the star cares for her audience, representing her as ordinary ( a theory suggested by Dyer). The timeline of the page is well thought through and creates suspense as it goes along towards the release of the artists new album. Cross media convergence is also seen on our social media page; our star is seen in an exclusive interview with BBC Radio 1 as well as her songs from her new album being used in the soundtrack of a new season of a well known show. promotion of live events has been seen with the release of tour dates for 2023 as well as a collaboration with a sustainabilty charity putting on a live show where profits from tickets go towards the charity. This represents the star as caring and loving showing that she cares for our enviroment. A call to action has been created through direct links; our song and album releases are available on all streaming platforms as well as a website being produced and linked in our bio. The website offers merchandise and information where you can learn m,ore about the artist. Merchandise allows the audience to feel a sense of personal identity towards the star helping engagement ans a sens eof involvement.

The page represents the star as both ordinary and extraordinary; she is represented as ordinary through regular interaction with her fans as well as givinginsights to her presonal live through Q&A’s, quizzes and posts. The engagement and interaction reveals that the star cares for her fans and has a loving nature. To contrast this she is also represented as extraordinary within her charcater; she is seen is statment outifts, amazing settings, working with famus brands. Artists make very little profit from online steams and it is therfore important to promote physical copies of products. therefore it is mentioned that you are able to but the album on both CD and vinyl on our website. As well as this large scale print advertising has been used to promote the album release in London. Finally the star demostrates her care for charities and political issues. Sustainabilty is a main focus throughout the social media page, with her clloabing with CoolEarth and becoming an abassador for the charity. She also regular shares important posts from other content makers about this topic, enabling her to share her views and opinions on current issues around the world.

Social Media Page Final Draft:

Overall myself and my partner are very happy with how our social media page has turned out. We belive we have hit all points on the assessmne the sheet and will encourage as much engagement and interaction as possible. The page is choherent and fits within our brand and design package well, being consistent throughout all three products.

Digipak Final Draft

Me and my partner have now produced our final draft of our digipak. Overall we are really happy with how this product has turned out and we believe it connotes the brand we wanted to portray perfectly. Our brand portrays our star in an ‘ethereal, mysterious, quirky’ way which has been portrayed within our digipak. The digipak uses different types of media language to portray this brand. The bright colours give a kaliedescopic aura along with the unique designs connoting our brand. The digipak is coherent, following a consistent colour palette throughout which is vital in order for a successful brand package. The bold, modern sans serif text inlines with the demographics of our target audience- young adults (primarily females) as well as connoting a spiritual feeling through the use of a ghosting effect on the front cover. The desings are simple yet effective, creating excitment and attraction throughout.

The paradox of the star, proposed by Dyer, is represented as extraordnary within our digipak. Our star is seen with an expressionless tone on her face, portraying a sense of mystery. The effects and distinctive designs represent the fun and energetic nature of our star’s character. As Barthes sugeests, narrative codes can also be seen within our digipak. The headscarf on the artist may connote a Middle Eastern vibe towards specific cultures whereas in other cultures this may be read as a statment and classy piece giving the star a sense of style. In order to gain our preferred reading, a theory suggested by Hall, we needed to ensure the correct ‘vibe’ was portrayed and did not represent a Middle Eastern atmosphere. Therefore we did this by using modern sans serif fonts and within the rest of the digipak, highlighted the almost ‘pshchedelic’ and ‘freaky’ aura of the star.

Our star follows a multi-genre vibe as mentioned in our mission statment and we believe our digipak supports this statement perfectly; you are able to gather different genres of music within it through different technical conventions and elements. For example on pop digipak is is common that the fornt uses a close up of the star’s face using direct mode of adress in order to entice and hook the audience in. R&B digipak’s often feature god-like images portraying the star as very extraordinary whilst creating a feeling of power. Lastly electronica digipaks give of a hallucinogenic ambience. All three of these genres are represented within our digipak through the use of common technical conventions.

What Has Changed Since Draft Three:

  • The title of ‘Freya’ has changed fonts to be inline with our social media page and othe products making her brand name coherent and consistent.
  • The middle left page’s colour has been changed to have a slightly more blue tone in order to follow the colour palette of the digipak.
  • The eye featured on the inside right has been edited slightly differently. Colours have been mixed to give a more exciting and psychedelic approach. As well as this the framing wround the eye has been edited to make it look as though it is almost closed behind soemthing.
  • The spines have been chnaged to inclsude the common font for ‘Freya’
  • The ‘Freya’ on the tv screen has been made more visible in order for the artists name to stand out.
  • The ‘Freya’ on thr frotn page has been centered.

Overall we belive our digipak coinsides with our mission statment perfectly. It expresses a multi-genre vibe towards our audience and demonstrates the stars quirky charcater throughout. We are very happy with our final product and believe our target audience will ‘accept the text’.

Music Video Final Draft

We have now produced our final draft of our music video as seen below. We believe that our music video provides entertainment for our audience throught the use of both narrative and perfromance aspects. It follows common technical conventions seen within professional music videos of the same genre (R&B/Pop). The video uses the repetoire of elements, a theory by Altman, for this genre in order for our audience to accept the text and not reject it e.g perfromance and narrative, bright colours, lip syncing, editing to the beat, variety of shot distances and the use of MES.

However to slightly challege those conventions to make our product ‘the same but different’ we put a lsight twist onto the storyline. In pop music videos the common theme relates to relationships and love, therefore to develop this idea we had a story of a character who is miserable due to a loss of a past relationship even though she could have everything she wants surrounding her from others perspective.

Me and my partner are happy with how our music video has turned out and believe we have produced a product which our audiences will accept and gain entertainment from. As well as this our music video helps to create a brand for our star in relation to our digipak and social media page. All three products are coherent featuring bright colours, ethereal atmospheres and a sense of mystery. This is vital in order to create a successfull brand package, good marketing techniques and star image helping to recognise the star immediatley between different products.

The star is represented as extraordinary, a theory proposed by Dyer, as she is seen in a classy black dress prtraying her as elegant and sophisticated. As well as this her performance nature using gestures and movement highlights her as an established star who is confident within her performance. This aspect also highlights De Saussaures idea of having a signifier which signifies a certain meaning which is commonly seen throughout our music video e.g the chracters emotionless face signifies her misery. Narrative codes, proposed by Barthes, can also be found within our music video. For example the ‘in loving memory’ card can be seen as both an enigma code as it isnt showed directly at the start of the video but also a semic code representing the chracaters loss, revaling her emotions and storyline.

(Please not that we have had some uploading issues and therefore areas of the video are not in sync, our orginal video on PremierePro is in sync.)

Please select 1080p HD for best quality.

What Has Changed Since Draft Four:

  • We have played around with the timing ensuring the lip syncing and editing to the beat is accurate.
  • Some clips have been swapped out for different ones where appropriate.
  • It was suggested that we use more close ups, therefore some clips have been zoomed in on to create a more personal appraoch towards the audience.
  • The ‘in loving memory’ card has been shown for slightly longer allowing the audience to gather an understanding for the narrative.
  • Some clips the lighting was too exposed therefore we have played around with the effects and made the exposure as best as it could be.

Our music video follows the vital assessment idea that has been created in order for the music video to be successful. We were able hold a shot steady and if this needed fixing war stablizer was used. However in some clips the video is purposely not completely steady to add effect to the video e.g when she is riding the bike or at the party scene to symbolize the chaotic atmosphere. Framing shots has alos been used within the music video by using a variety of shot distances and making sure the star is always the main focus within the shot. MES was used extremely well within all the different scenes in order to expand on the narrative so the audience knows what is going on as well as to add effect and make it seem more realisitc. Transitions have also been used throughout to keep the audiece hooked and making the video more exciting.

Overall we are very happy with how our final product has turned out and belive it has followed the criteria and tecnhical conventions but can also be seen as ‘the same but different’ making it unique to other music videos.

Social Media Page Draft Two

After finishing draft one of our social media page new posts have been made within the second draft as seen below is the presentation. In order to improve upon our last draft we have included posts relating to debates/politics/important issues. This has included our star raising awarness for the planet and climate change. This has been shown through collaborations with organisations and charities, promoting the star in a kind and caring way (ordinary). One major way we have done this is a collaboration with the charity ‘CoolEarth’ and have produced an animation of a one night only concert which our star will be playong at, where all profits made from tickets go towards this charity. We have also portrayed these important topica through the use of stories; our star has shared other posts which talk about these issues.

Since our first draft we have also included the use of cross media convergence as our star has announced she will be featuring on BBC radio one at a specific time. To ensure the interactions of the target audience our star has shared posts where she interacts with her audience, thanking them for all the support she has recently gained. A vogue feature has also been posted in which an article and interview can be seen within the lastest Vogue magazine. This appearnce helps the media to see that she is an already established artist, featuring in one og the biggest magazine companies. Finally another post which has been made since draft one is a teaser post for the stars latest single, featuring a small snippet from her music video which is going to be released soon. Below you can see images of our draft two social media page.

Social Media Page Draft Two:

Feedback:

In order to understand what is going well and what could be improved upon it is essential to get feedback from others outisde of your production team. Therefore our teacher has put together a screen castify of what she likes about our social media page and what she thinks we could add within our next draft to make it even better.

Screen Castify:

Positives:

  • The page is coherent- it has creted a vibe and brand for the star.
  • Good use of high class promotion.
  • Collaborations in aid of charity raising political issues- helping her star image.
  • cross media convergence has been used.
  • Behind the cenes has been used effectively to entertain the audience keeping them hooked in.
  • The star is seen as ordinary through interactive posts.
  • Brand colaborations and promos have been used which are extremely important.
  • The vibe overall works well.
  • Variety of posts are good e.g videos, photos, goods.
  • The star shows she is ordinary and extraordinary.
  • The website is good and gives a different approach towards the page.

Improvments:

  • Guerilla marketing could be included- one off marketing.
  • More cross media convergence could be included- has the stars music been used for a major project e.g a film sountrack.
  • Release the album when complete.

Focus Forward:

Overall for our second draft of our social media page we have recieved very posistve feedback. We have shown a choherent page that has an overall vibe which is extremely important in order to create a branding image and keep the page organised. Promotion, collaborations, cross media convergence, BTS, star image, variety of posts and a webiste have all been portrayed and produced well within the social media page. These all help to create entertainment, provide information, social identity and social intercation which proves to be very important when creating a brand image to keep your audience interacting with the page.

Within our next draft we will aim to use Guerilla marketing startegies, a one off marketing strategy, which will grab the audience’s attention. As well as this it was suggested that we could use slightly more cross media covergence within the page in order to show how the star is successfull and is used on other media texts and platfroms. Finally we will aim to post the announcment of the release of the album as our final posts for our social media page.

Digipak Draft Three

We have now produced our digipak draft three and it is starting to come together well. Within this draft we have made a few changes recommended from our last feedback. These include ghosting the title more, changing the background to add a halo effect, the inside two panes have been developed after experimenting with different images and the font on the back pane has been played with. For this draft we have put our digipak into an actual CD case, as seen below. Doing this has allowed us to see how it would actually look as a product enabling us to make any necassary changes within the next draft.

Digipak Draft 3:

Digipak Draft 3 In CD Case:

In order to know how our digipak design is represented to our audience is is important to gather relevent feedback. Below is a table which was presented to our peers with different music genres; they were asked which genre they thought our digipak represented. The results showed that we were able to get our preferred reading towards our digipak with the main three genres chosen being Electronica, R&B and Pop, which is exactly what we hoped for. This fits with our mission statement for our star image, as it states Freya gives a multi-genre vibe including the top three most chosen genres. Therefore the representation of these genres is evident within our digipak as the audience were able to guess the preferred reading.

Peer Feedback:

Focus Forward:

We now know that our digipak is on the right track as it displays the genres we hoped for towards our audience. This is due to us taking out the key repetoire of elements (Lacey) typically seen within these genres and used their technical conventions whilst still putting our own twist to it, making it ‘the same but different’. We can now finalise our product making any relevant changes needed.

Digipak Draft Two

Digipak Draft Two:

Producing our digipak draft two we had to consider the reflections we made from draft one. Within this draft we had time to play around with more images taken from our shoot, finding images which we think worked better and showed our photography skills well. As well as this, draft two, includes both inside panes of the digipak as well as the front and back, so we now have a complete rough digipak. This draft is nowhere near perfect but we believe we are on the right tracks of how we want our star and digipak to be portrayed and are happy with our progress made.

As we go along with the production of our digipak it is very important to recieve relevant feedback from others outside of our team to gain an audiences viewpoint on the product. Therefore our media teacher has created a screen castify, giving feedback on our product and what could be changed within the next draft to make it even better.

Teacher’s Screencastify:

Within this screencastify my teacher takes me through what she likes about the digipak and what could be worked upon within the next draft. So far we have recieved very positive feedback on our second draft and will ensure any necessary changes our made next time.

Positives:

  • The picture on the front pane is good and professional.
  • The echo effect on the font of ‘Faces In The Crowd’ is a good effect.
  • The back panes ‘vibe’ is good and modern.
  • Our teacher is very confident with the front cover as it is simple yet effective.
  • We would be able to enter it now and get a good mark however there are still improvments to be made.
  • Most typical digipak conventions are seen so far.

Improvements:

  • To get rid of text box on front cover- wasn’t meant to be there.
  • Enhance the echo effect on ‘Faces’ and ‘Crowd’.
  • Make sure the artists name is in the middle on the front cover.
  • Can the image be bigger on the back cover?
  • Faces In The Crowd needs to be one of the song tracks.
  • Include the artists name on the spines.
  • Include copyright on the back.
  • Slightly more sophisticated font on the back.
  • The middle slightly takes away the genre of the album and needs to be looked at to make it slightly less dark.

Focus Forward:

Now we have started to make good progress on our digipak, finalising it and tweeking certain aspects will be easy for our team. Generally we our happy with how our digipak is going but there are certain elements which need changing, adding and improving in order for it to be more successfull (as mentioned above). We believe that our digipak represents our star in a mysterious, ethereal and fun way, which we hoped to display within the product. The design and photography is coherent throughout whilst relating to our social media page also which is very important in order to create a brand image.

Social Media Page Draft One

Social Media Page Draft One:

SOCIAL MEDIA PAGE: https://www.instagram.com/freya.official.artist/?next=%2F

Below is a presentation taking you through what mine and my partners social media page looks like so far. Images from every post are included within the slideshow, from tour dates to behind the scenes footage. As we have gone along the process of starting to create our star’s social media page we have learnt the importance of interaction with the audience in order to keep them enaged as well as the use of persuasive language. This helps to keep the audience feeling excited for the products but also portrays the star image in a professional way.

The colour palette of our page typically sees bright colours, especially blue, which helps to follow the theme of our digipak and music video which also heavily feature these colours, helping to create a branding image towards our star. Our page uses typical conventions of a music artists social media page helping to guide the audience and having a well organised layout for fans to follow. Our page includes the use of the Blumler and Katz theory of entertainment, information, personal indentity and social interaction. These attributes are extremely important when producing a social media page for a music star in order to keep the audience wanting more and being provided enough so that they do not reject the text.

Social Media Page Draft One Evaluation:

In order to know what to do next with our social media page it is extremely important to go through an evaluation and make sure you are including what needs to be included and if not, to do this within the next draft.

From this evaluation we have gathered that so far we are on the right track with our social media page as we have accomplished a lot of the assessment criteria already. Within our page we have a good sense of design coherence, content, synergy, promotion of live events, a call to action, ordinary/extraordinary representaion, engagement and political issues (see attachment below). However there are still a few key elements which we will need to include within our next draft such as cross media convergence and selling physical copies for the audience. In order to do this we will have our star featuring in an interview with BBC radio and also to see our star holding physical copies of the album, when released, in stores.

Focus Forward:

The first draft of our social media page has so far been successful and we have been able to portray our star in the way we wanted to; fun exciting, mysterious, ethereal and down to earth. However in order to get our page where we want it to be more posts need to be completed within our second draft inclusing the use of cross media convergence and seeing the star with physical copies of the album. These two essential elements will help us to complete the criteria so that it can follow all the typucal conventions seen on music stars social media pages. Another way in which our page could be improved is to have a wider use of different formats of posts e.g videos, realms, animations and more. By doing this it will help to keep wider engagement within the audeince and keep the page more exciting through the use of different formats.

Overall we have made good progress with our social media page and are heading in the direction we hoped to. We are very happy with the layout of the page and the posts made so far and will therefore continue to do this within our next draft of our social media page.

Social Media Page- Marketing Timeline

Marketing Research:

In order to achive what our targeted audience expects to see and a successful marketing campaign it is vital to research possibile marketing strategies to increase the likelihood of audience engagement, ensuring they accept the text. These may include synergy, guerilla marketing, viral marketing and more. The main use of marketing we will use for our star image is synery- when one or more organisations interact and collaborate, benefitting both sides. This will enable our star to gain new following from demographics of similar intrests to those in her audience and then, in return, it will benfit the brand she is collabortaing with.

Brand collaborations will be our main form of synergy, collaborating with skincare, makeup and clothing brands which relate to what our fans are also interested in. This will enable our star to become more well recognised within the media gaining a new audience and following. We will also use another form of a marketing technique known as a merchandise. This type of marketing not only provides income for the artist but also helps the audience to interact with others through word of mouth, the news of new merchandise becoming trendy will help promote the star and her artist. It also helps to portray our star in a positive manner showing she cares for her fans and wants to help them feel a sense of personal identity and connection towards the star.

The album is called ‘Faces In The Crowd’ so a clever way of promoting the album would be too take photos of mulitple people with the star being centre, this may feature within our digipak also. This reinforces the idea of the album but also creates a different and unique image idea which will be havily recognised within the media.

Our Marketing Timeline:

In is important to stay organised throughout the process and by producing this timeline will enable this. The timeline includes different types of posts we aim to achieve by the end of this project, which we believe help promote our star in a positive and engaging mannar.

Within our social media page me and my partner want to include a variety of posts in order to keep our audience engaged constantly. Some posts we want to include are:

It also allows the social media page to create information, entertainment, personal identity and social interaction.

Focus Forward:

Now we have produced a timeline me and my partner feel more organised going into the process of producing a social media page. It has enabled us to have a clear idea of how we will set out our page and what type of posts will be featured.

Audience Interaction With Social Media Page- Analysis

To gain an understanding of how similar artists within the music industry promote themselves within the media and what common conventions are seen on their social media is needed before we start to produce our own. We chose Tinashe’s instagram page to analyse as she follows a similar demographic and target audience that we have chosen for our star. Her general atmosphere and vibe is also how we want to portray our star when it comes to making a social media page. Below is a screencastify of me and my partner’s analysis of Tinashe’s Instagram page, highlighting what technical conventions are typically seen trhoughout her page.

Screencastify of Social Media Page Analysis:

From analysing an already established star within the industry we were able to pick up on the common conventions seen within her social media page and how she as an artist is portrayed to her audience. The singer follows common conventions typically seen on most artists social media pages; close up profile picture, bio information, highlights/stories, post count and follower count. These common conventions help the media to recognise she is an established star and constantly keeping her page active for her audience, showing she cares for her fans.

Her instagram page also follows the conventions of AIDA- attentions, inerest, desire and action, through her unique images and colour pallette keeping a choerent instagram page, acting as a role model towards her fans, keeping a well organised page with easily accessabile links and audience interaction being encouraged. As well as this the Blumler and Katz, Uses and Gratifications theory, is also shown, creating a sense of entertainment, information, personal identity and social interaction. The posts follow a clever use of both digital design and photography skills creating an ‘ethereal’ and ‘mysterious’ approach towards the star’s character. She also is constantly seen to be updating her information regarding tour dates, merchandise, magazine features and more- important in order to create a brand for a star. Personal identity is seen through the regualr interaction with the audience as well as the option of buying merchandise, connecting the star and the audience together. Social interaction is extremely important for a successful social media page and this is seen through comments, livestreams, videos as well as regualr posts, allowing the fans to always have something to talk about, keeping her highlighted and known within the media.

Richard Dyer’s theory of star image is also shown throughout her instagram page with her being represented as both ordianary and extraordinary. The rgualr interactions with her fans create a humble and caring charcater whereas her posts create a sense of excitment through the professional touch helping to portray her as extraordinary.

Focus Forward:

Now having a clear understadning of how artists are able to promote themselves to stay highlighted within the media we will be able to use this knowledge going forward when creating our own social media page for our star. We have gathered an understanding that is important for our target audience to see our star as both ordinary and extraordinary so they can see different sides to her. As well as this is is extremely important to follow the theories of both AIDA and the uses and gratifications theory in order to keep the audience hooked. Regualr posts, audience interaction, marketing techniques, additional information, a coherent page and products are all common technical conventions which we will be inlcuding within our page in order for it to be successfull. This task has also given us inspiration for what we could post on our own page helping to have a clearer idea of our product.
