Music Video – Narrative Storyboard

Below is the link to our narrative storyboard. We created this storyboard so we would collect every shot that we needed and thought was essential for our music video narrative. We added the types of shots we would use for example close ups, long depth of field and mid shots.

Creating this storyboard has helped us with the organisation of the shooting days, so we know what to shoot where and when.

Draft 1 feedback and targets

After creating our first draft of the performance section for out music video we decided to get feedback from peers and our media teacher. This gave us the opportunity to see their opinions on our work so far.

We asked for targets on our work so we have areas that we can improve on. Below are the targets and ideas suggested:

*To use more close ups

*Quicker cuts to close ups and different shots

*More movement shots

*Larger variety of shots

*Fast paced editing.

Mrs Cobb’s feedback:

Adam’s feedback:

Ben’s feedback:

From all of this feedback it is clear to us that we need to include more variety of shots, more movement shots and quicker editing techniques to keep the music video flowing, interesting and exciting for the audience.

Music Video Draft 1

Here is our music video performance section, draft 1. We have included basic editing skills into this draft, aligned the vocals to the lyrics of the song and included different angles of shots.

Although this is a rough cut of our music video, I am able to see our potential and how we are going to create a music video to the best of our abilities.

Shoot Evaluation – Performance

Below are some images from our performance section of our music video.

From these image you are able to see how well we worked as a team, and the overall outcome and look of the performance shoot.

What went well during the performance shoot?

Teamwork.

*I believe the part that went the best during the shoot was our team work. This is because we all kept each other motivated, helped each other along the way for example; when I pushed Kris along on the wheeled chair to create movement shots.

Organisation.

*I also think our organisation for this shoot was exceptional, from the thought of emailing the owners of the underground carpark, to the charging of the cameras and lights.

*We organised our band members well too due to asking for the car, guitars and amps to be brought by them.

*They also turned up at the correct time, wearing the ideal clothing and knowing the lyrics to the song.

Filming.

*Finally I believe filming the band play the whole song using two different cameras at the same time worked well as we were able to film the band play in two different angles. We then used one other camera to film movement shots while the other cameras were filming, to make sure that we had enough footage.

*Myself and Chanel were using the two cameras on the tripods and Kris was using the camera on the hand held tripod for movement shots.

What did not go so well during the performance shoot?

Focusing cameras.

*During the performance shoot I believe the top thing that did not go so well was making sure the cameras were in focus the whole time. This has now set us back dramatically as the movement shots in particular are not in focus for the main majority of time.

Continuity

*Another thing that did not go so well was the continuity of shots, this is because we were using an old Mini car as the spot lights in the background of the video. Due to the car being old we were worried about the car battery dying. We therefore had to film some shots without the mini lights on and hope that you were unable to see or spot the difference.

Targets For Next Time

*Next time a target would be to make sure all of the cameras are in focus, so that we get every shot possible.

*If we were to do the performance section again we need to make sure the band are completely confident, know the lyrics and are happy working together.

Permission from Lovells Property Guernsey.

Here I have contacted Nigel Duquemin, the Associate Director at Lovells Property to ask if we are able to film our performance section in their underground car park.

In this email I included the fact that we would more than likely make some noise due to the instruments and I asked if we could park an old car inside.

This is my email:

Here is the positive response that we have had back from Nigel, who seems very keen to help us out with our location.

Music Video Shot List – Performance

Below is a link to my group’s visual shot list. This includes screenshots of Catfish and the Bottlemen’s music videos, where we think the key conventions of a indie performance stands out.

This shot list includes shots that we would like to make a replica of or similar to the actual Catfish and the Bottlemen videos.

For example the harsh high key white lighting coming from spot lights and long lights above the band. Close ups to suggest the main singer is breaking the 4th wall, trying to connect his lyrics and emotions to the audience, and Bright lights purely on one part of the band, to show their authority to their part of the song, whether its a solo or not.

From completing this piece of work I now really understand how indie music videos are made, what camera movements are used and what type of lighting, in this case there was a lot of fast paced editing, quick pans to different members of the band, and lots of high key lighting to brighten the area away from the darkness of the bands clothing.

Music Video – Risk Assessment

Here is the risk assessment for my groups shoot days where we spoke to our teacher and discussed what we needed to look out for before we started filming, to think about hazards and dangers, and ways to keep each other safe.

In this case we needed to discuss the treehouse in particular, due to some possible dangers of the location. From this discussion we have been told to stay away from the edges of the tree house and be extremely responsible at the location.

This is our risk assessment form for the performance section of the music video, where we have looked into detail any dangers of the location. In particular ventilation and cars entering and leaving the car park.

Below is our next risk assessment, putting forward any dangers or hazards when filming Sades’ solo part in our music video. It includes any elements of risk for example sat on a wall with the reservoir behind.

Music Video Planning – Narrative/ Performance Timeline

Below is the link to my groups timeline of planning our narrative and performance for our music video. This timeline shows how our music video will come together and shows you what we will be including in the video.

This has helped my group realise the length of the song and which footage we have taken will go and when it will be used.

We have also crystallised the idea that the treehouse would be best for the narrative rather than the performance, because we have come to the realisation that getting the instruments to the treehouse will be too difficult and quite possibly unsafe due to carrying a whole drum kit.
