Detailed Music Video analysis

For this task I was required to complete a detailed analysis of a music video I chose the song I was going to analyze from a group of options. I chose to analyze Wildest dream by Taylor Swift. I’ve heard many of Taylor Swifts songs in the past so I thought it would be a goof and interesting song to analyze and to watch one of her videos from a media perspective. I knew that what analyzing this music video I would be looking our for key conventions such as, genre, MES, narrative, performance, star image and many more. I then wrote down the things I found and saw and  filled in  the table shown below.

In conclusion, this task was use full and I feel widened my skills of analyzing. It allowed me to watch a music video I hadn’t seen before and look at it in a new way and to think more in detail about what is going on within the music video as well as looking at the MES used. I’d never looked at music videos in this way before, this will help me when it comes to creating my own music video as now i have an understanding on how to do this I understand the different conventions in music videos, how they are created and the meaning behind them. It has helped me in deciding if I want my music video to be amplified, disjunctive or illustrative and what each of these look like.

Final Song Choice

Our Song choice- After me and my group pitched our ideas to each other, we talked threw each others song choices and decided on one song, this being ‘All Goes Wrong’ by Chase & Status. I had already heard this song beforehand but hadn’t really listened to the lyrics before but I think it will work well with the ideas we have planned for our video as well and the makeup we plan to use. It is not a well known song and has a duration of 3 minutes and 22 seconds which is in the perfect amount of time for this task.

Why we chose this song-

We can use our star image to perform the lip-syncing in the beginning scenes, then moving to colorful explosions when the beat drops and the chorus begins, this will make a contrast from when it goes from a slow beat to a fast one.

The lyrics in the song we’ve chosen have a deep meaning and the singer has a dramatic voice which opens up many opportunities for us to experiment with our star image. The song also has a strong chorus and has a variety of rhythms and tempos which we can work with to make our video the best we can.

Initial song ideas for a video – Mini pitch

Before deciding on one individual song in my group, we all made our own mini pitches with a song choice of our own and ideas we feel we could use. We then pitched these to each other while discussing each one to get a full idea to how we imagine it to look we did this by using synesthesia, we did this by getting a piece of paper between our group and as we listen to the song we wrote down words that came to our head and what we could see by just using our ears, some examples of the words we came up with were, graveyard, sad, desperate and many more. we also discussed talking about star image, camera angles, extraordinary, ordinary, variety of shots, transitions and paradox of the Star in our group.

After looking over everyone’s mini pitch we decided to use lois song choice with Holly’s makeup and outfit choice making it something we all like as well as including all of our ideas.

coverage, star image, cut to close up, lip sync, extraordinary, ordinary, variety of shots, transitions, paradox of the Star, Richard Dyer. Edit to the beat.

Perfect Production Group

Our Group Agreement

As my music video project is a group effort, my group and I spent some time together sharing our ideas and communicating our thoughts to each other. We also knew it was important to discuss each others strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the skills we have. We then completed a form, where we wrote our strengths and weaknesses we discussed. We then signed the form in agreement, working together and staying dedicated to our project.

How will this help us manage the project?

It was extremely helpful for our team to discuss these things with each other as we now have a clear understanding of who will be good at certain areas of the project and who will struggle with other areas. This means we can organize ourselves efficiently and plan ahead for certain roles. Between the three of us, we were able to agree that we have a wide variety of transferable skills which will benefit our group hugely. It was also helpful to discuss who is best at different areas of filming, editing and directing roles to help us organize ourselves for when it comes to the production process.

Music Video Form & Conventions

For this task I Watched 4 music videos from different genres from the blog post and took notes about their form & content, I then filled out this table with everything the video showed.

Band / Song Duration (time) Content Ratio

Narrative : Performance

Genre MES – how is it relevant to the genre or the narrative? Describe the type and structure of Narrative and how it links to themes/lyrics

(Illustration, Amplification & Disjuncture)

Star Image: What does the video tell us about the star/artist/band? What adjectives would you use to describe them?
She and him

In the sun

2010 50 50 Alternative/Indie This music video is set in a school where everyone is dancing and singing apart from one man, they all seem to be following this man.

They are all wearing at least one bright color apart from the one man, this makes him stand out.

The only narrative used in this particular music video is dancing around a school and following a man. The girl- Happy, fun, bright, joyful.

The man- Bored, likes being alone, quite.

sabotage

2021 50 50 pop This music video is about a girl who is sitting in her house which becomes full with flowers which she then rewind by blowing things up then the floor becomes flooded with water then sets on fire and burns down.

Mes is used in many ways in this video, a big out being costume and she is getting messy but she’s still wearing what looks like an expensive dress.

The narrative in this video was a huge part of this music video as aot was happening and it was hard to take your eyes off it. The narrative goes with the performance very well and when she sings the words ‘savatage’ things blow up. Brave, uset, fearless, strong

Lover of the night

2012 100 0 Neo-Folk, Rock This music video is about a man who talks to himself and does everything alone but still seems happy, we then get to know that this man is blind, he then leaves his house without his cane and dangerously runs up to a ciff where we think he will fall but instead he stops. The narrative in this video links to the lyrics showing the story and meaning behind the words used. Relaxed, happy, smartly dressed. Professional, sad, broken down

Keep your head up

2011 100 0 pop This music video starts off with a man walking through the woods blowing bubbles, barefoot collecting water, this suggests that he’s homeless  The narrative in this music video sets the scene and tone of the music, for example its quite calm and slow then it gets faster and so does the video. Calm, bright, story telling, relaxed.

This task has been really helpful and a big insight to planning and what is needed to make a good music video as it has given me an understanding of the concept and meaning behind music videos. I now understand that a music video can either be a narrative, performance or both depending on which suits the song and story line better. I also know that the role that genre plays in this as well as how the videos are filmed and the MES used. This will much help when it comes to making my own music video as I now know what it takes to make a good video.
