Favourite music videos from former student

What video do I like?

The previous students music video that I like the best was ‘take aim’. I chose this music video because there are a few features that jumped out at me more than the other videos.

Why did I like it?

Firstly the setting and mise en scene  was very good and it matched firstly how the song felt but also it matched what the actors were doing so put simply it fit the narrative and genre well. Another thing I like was the black and white effect on the flashback scene and then it jumps to colour once its back to real life, I think this allows the audience to understand the story  and narrative the video is showing. I also liked the middle and long shots in the more action based scenes, because it allowed the viewer to see the whole situation and adds some scope to it. Another shot that was very good was the close up shots of the body, it is meant to be a horrific scene and it adds to that feeling by being so close. One final thing I liked was the quick cuts when the actors were walking which sped up the sequence but without disorientating the audience.

What could they have done better?

One thing I think they could have done better however was when it came to keeping some shots steady, a saw a few times where the camera would move when it obviously wasn’t meant to, this makes it look less polished and overall less professional.

What have I learned?

When it comes to creating my own music video there are a few things this music video has taught me. Firstly to work on keeping the camera steady so my video looks clean and well executed. Another thing I have learnt is that the effects we will have access to might not look very good so I would either try and improve the effects or stay away from using them.

Detailed music video analysis

To try and create the best music videos we can we first need to analyse some real music videos and hopefully learn from them . The reason we need to analyse these video is to get some ideas of what we want our music videos to be like and to learn what works and what doesn’t as well as some techniques and tips to help us. The first one I have analysed is ‘Thursday’ by Jess Glynne. I have created a document to break down the music video and pick out details from it.

My second music video analysis is on ‘This is America’ by Childish Gambino/Donald Glover. I chose this because it has lots of hidden meanings, metaphors and references going on in the video. I think that I can learn a lot from this music video as it has lots of clever metaphors and references and that is something I would like to implement into my music video.

This is my breakdown of the music video.
