SHOOT 2 RISK ASSESSMENT

This is our Risk Assessment that was contributed too by all in order to execute our Shoot 2 narrative for our music video. Our shoot will take place on Tuesday 6th July 2021. With this, we were able to identify key risks that we have to be cautious of when shooting. We have agreed, as a group, the necessary precautions we need to take when travelling too and from the filming location. As a result of carrying out this task, it helps us prepare for the day, how we will get there, travel and how to approach the concept of filming our performance section to complete our music video.

MUSIC VIDEO 1 – PERFORMANCE ROUGH CUT REFLECTION

Our performance shoot took place at the Prison Lanes. This was a great place for us to shoot due to the aesthetic of rustic and abandoned buildings. We all combined our own ideas together to produce a successful set of performance clips for our music video.

Self Assessment:

  • We all contributed our own ideas – agreeing, allowing us to collect a set of clips suitable for our final music video.
  • As a group, we took a vast selection of shots within the area of the Prison Lanes which set off a connection with our theme.
  • We were able to shoot multiple clips of the first part of the song whereby, the quality improved the more we did.
  • Our clip editing provides us with a guideline as to what we would like our final music video to look like; it gives us opportunity to discover how we would like our narrative to be represented within the video.

Targets for improvement:

  • I believe, that for our clip, it would’ve been a more beneficial for our group if we focused on the end of the song a bit more, as we have for the first part of the song.
  • Even though our chosen location represented our genre and themes well, there wasn’t a lot of choice as to where we could film, and we didn’t want to repeat ourselves with the location choice.
  • To finalise our second clips of the song, it would’ve been better for our performer to memorise all of the words prior to the shoot.

Focus forward:

With our focus forward, I believe, for our music video we should immerse ourselves into making sure our star image is represented correctly within our theme of battling addiction. I think, going forward and in preparation for our narrative shoot, we she include a varied range of shots, angles and camera techniques whilst composing our video using advanced editing skills provided by the whole group.

SHOOT 1 REFLECTION (PERFORMANCE)

In order to create our music video, it was vital for us, as a group, to carry out a productive shoot/s, whereby we collect footage, of high standard, to be included within our music video. With this, we had to plan and execute a successful (performance) shoot which required us to select a location, suitable to our chosen genre, with Mes En Scne that coincides to the song of our choice – Otherside. A performance shoot consists of a performer who lip syncs the song, using body composition and facial expressions to imply the themes and issues that occur throughout the song. Below, I have inserted a selection of images which were taken throughout the morning of shooting:

Below  is an image of our performer during the shoot:

This image was taken whilst shooting – it shows a contrast of costume with location and lighting.

What went well:

  • Our planning, prior to our performance shoot paid off – our location reflected the genre of our song well as a result of an abandoned building, submerged in graffiti, lifeless really focused back to the idea of battling an addiction.
  • We were able, as a group, to collect a selection of footage which will be of help when putting together our finalised music video which consists of performance and narrative clips.
  • The Mes En Scene, that as a group, we came to a decision on was effective and played a substantial part when trying to connote important themes and issues.
  • As a group, we worked well together; all taking part in segments regarding production skills allowing us to contribute ideas towards the performance as a whole.
  • A collection of skills came together from each of us within the group, enabling us to produce a higher level piece of work with integrated skills of different formats.

Improvements for next time:

  • I found our clips sometimes lacked skill, for example, our performers head sometimes disappeared within the shot which made it difficult for us to use our clip in our music video this was due to the tripod being positioned incorrectly.
  • As a result of filming in a public area, it was common that individuals would often walk past us when shooting, this meant we would have to stop, let the individuals pass and then continue.
  • Even though our background was very fitting and authentic to our genre, there wasn’t a lot of it to have as our background. We had to find different locations within the area of the Prison Lanes to be able to shoot a number of clips of good quality.
  • I believe that our clips could’ve done with a more varied range of angles, shots and camera techniques, enhancing the themes, issues and meaning of our music video.

PRODUCT MEETING AGENDA

This product meeting agenda was completed in order to produce a successful performance shoot. With this, we can look back and refer to what is needed for our shoot, who is responsible for bringing equipment, locations with dates and times and who is allocated to what role. In addition, we need to ensure that our star image is represented accurately throughout the performance using a repertoire of elements and Mise En Scene.

RISK ASSESSMENT

This is our Risk Assessment that we all had to contribute too in preparation for our performance shoot on Tuesday 22nd June 21. With this we were able to identify ways in which we can prevent any risks or accidents from occurring. We agreed as a group the necessary precautions we need to take when travelling to and from the filming location, when we are shooting, and the travelling home/school. By carrying out this task, it helps us prepare for the day, how we will get there, travel and how to approach the concept of filming our performance section to complete our music video.

STAR IMAGE – THE PERFORMER

With this, we were asked to create a mood board as a group, using the software Canva, to broaden our knowledge and understanding of our performers star image, ensuring that an ordinary yet extraordinary feel is communicated through to our target audience. We used adjectives such as, curious, anger, cheeky, relaxed, mellow and energetic to describe quotations, images and album covers to connote the star image provided by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. It is essential for us to convey a metanarrative through the performance, returning back to research from Richard Dyer, ‘Paradox of The Star’ – a powerful star image (acting in ways similar to an audience and regular people, yet possess something we do not have which makes them special) through visual representation. With completing this task, it will aid us when carrying out our performance shoot as we want to represent the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in the most accurate way possible. By doing so, we will be able to portray to our target audience a similar composition standard.

VISUAL SHOT LIST – SHOOT 1

Our visual shot list was essential in the process of creating our group music video. With this, we had to create, with group efforts, a Padlet which consisted of a collage of screenshots and giphs in response to a performance narrative; we had to include 9, in detail paragraphs whereby we explained how different conventions & transitions have been used to impact the audience or viewer watching the clip. I have broadened my understanding and knowledge of which repertoire of elements are most suited to our chosen genre and what will connote our narrative of ‘addiction’ in the most efficient way. Furthermore to this, our star image for our performance needs to be portrayed correctly, coinciding with our genre, (indie rock) –  with the use of editing and the correct Mes en Scene, we will be able to convey this narrative/performance within our own (group) music video.

PITCH & FEEDBACK

Below is our group pitch for our music video, using the song ‘Otherside’ by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. It was vital that our group posed our ideas to our teacher to ensure we were on track in preparation for the production of our music video and that our proposal was going to be sufficient. As a result of completing this task, it broadened our understanding of strengths and weakness carried within the group and what we had to set ourselves in respective to goals and achievements. To add, we also had to add a list of strengths and targets that we are setting ourselves as a group.

Positives(6):

  • We have decided, as a group, on a clear narrative & performance which will  represent our song well as we have based our narrative on the theme of the song – battling prior addictions.
  • Our group decided on basing our music video in a location where low-key lighting has a visual representation to the mood, genre of our chosen song, also conveying to the audience the struggle the individual is facing, e.g. a room with little lighting, high walls and ceilings, a roulette wheel etc.
  • We have decided on the chosen MES for the male/female individuals who will be featuring in our music video (narrative), e.g. males wear full black suits, waist coats, bow ties and females wear black/coloured dresses connoting elegance, importance and the sophistication of the event.
  • We have, as a group, decided that the best way to represent our amplified narrative is to have the narrative coincide with the song lyrics and meaning, by doing so, the audience will be able to gain a sufficient understanding of what is happening within the music video and what this means using props e.g. a roulette wheel. Moving on, something bad will happen to the specific individual as a result of gambling and his reaction will connote the terror and struggle of battling prior addiction.
  • Our idea is something of an intriguing enigma which will hopefully engage our audience.
  • We have a focused but simplistic idea for our music video with an engaging and empowering theme.

Negatives(3):

  • We need to decide as a group what our band/performers are going to wear when being filmed for our music video.
  • As a group, we need to decide what is going to happen regarding our performance – who? what? where?
  • Making a decisions as to whether we want just a singer or a band in our music video.
