RISK ASSESSMENT

This is our Risk Assessment that we all had to contribute too in preparation for our performance shoot on Tuesday 22nd June 21. With this we were able to identify ways in which we can prevent any risks or accidents from occurring. We agreed as a group the necessary precautions we need to take when travelling to and from the filming location, when we are shooting, and the travelling home/school. By carrying out this task, it helps us prepare for the day, how we will get there, travel and how to approach the concept of filming our performance section to complete our music video.

STAR IMAGE – THE PERFORMER

With this, we were asked to create a mood board as a group, using the software Canva, to broaden our knowledge and understanding of our performers star image, ensuring that an ordinary yet extraordinary feel is communicated through to our target audience. We used adjectives such as, curious, anger, cheeky, relaxed, mellow and energetic to describe quotations, images and album covers to connote the star image provided by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. It is essential for us to convey a metanarrative through the performance, returning back to research from Richard Dyer, ‘Paradox of The Star’ – a powerful star image (acting in ways similar to an audience and regular people, yet possess something we do not have which makes them special) through visual representation. With completing this task, it will aid us when carrying out our performance shoot as we want to represent the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in the most accurate way possible. By doing so, we will be able to portray to our target audience a similar composition standard.

OTHERSIDE – TEST SHOOT

In the process of creating our music video, we were expected to take part in a ‘test shoot’, where we took a collection of different clips using a variety of shots and transitions, for example, over the shoulder shots, close ups, and wide angle shots. We were required to have a performer, conveying our star image accurately, whilst lip-syncing to our chosen song, ‘Otherside’. Once filmed and put together in a matter-of-fact way, we then turned to editing what footage we had gathered from our shoot. Some of our editing techniques consisted of, editing to the beat and contrasting transitions into our piece using the software Premiere Pro, e.g. fading. In order for our test shoot to be successful, we had to incorporate coverage of our star, both performing (playing poker), and lip syncing to ‘Otherside’ in an ordinary way.

What went well:

  • As a group, we were able to put together a selection of clips, using a software called Premiere Pro – this allowed us to import our music and incorporate editing techniques in order to complete our test shoot.
  • Our Mes en Scene, covering our star, was portrayed accurately coinciding with the theme of gambling & addiction – suits, glasses and body position.
  • We included a vast variety of editing techniques within our finished piece, for example, black&white filter, fades, black to black, dissolve etc.
  • The coverage we collected of our star was satisfactory, with clips of lip-syncing and a collection of narrative sections.

What could be better in the real thing:

  • In our test shoot, we struggled with getting the camera in complete focus. A camera being in focus is essential in any production clip, so as of next time, ensuring the clips and images are of high standard will be a priority.
  • As a group, we should’ve collected more images and clips of greater quality, for example, sections involving lip-syncing; we should’ve had more which would’ve made our test shoot clip considerably better. As a result of not having a successful first shoot, we weren’t able to show of our skills to the best of our ability.
  • In our clips, we should’ve included a more vast range of angles and shots – as a result of including many different angles/shots, it would’ve made the final piece a lot more interesting to the audience.
  • Finally, I believe using a different location would’ve impacted our test shoot in a more positive way, as the location used didn’t convey the theme well enough, resulting in the audience not being able to understanding the storyline.

In the near future, when, as a group, we start delving deeper into the process of creating our own magazine, understanding and acknowledging our improvements will be essential. If we do not follow such improvements, our music video will be of a very satisfactory level and as a group we are aiming to prove and show off all of our skills in the work we will produce. This test shoot has been a good experience, expanding my understanding as to what is and what’s not conventional for a music video. We are now more familiar to the software Premiere Pro, which will be a common occurrence when we come to creating our final piece – becoming immune to the way premiere pro work, will allow us to use all technical features and conventions to make our final product the best it can be.

 

VISUAL SHOT LIST – SHOOT 1

Our visual shot list was essential in the process of creating our group music video. With this, we had to create, with group efforts, a Padlet which consisted of a collage of screenshots and giphs in response to a performance narrative; we had to include 9, in detail paragraphs whereby we explained how different conventions & transitions have been used to impact the audience or viewer watching the clip. I have broadened my understanding and knowledge of which repertoire of elements are most suited to our chosen genre and what will connote our narrative of ‘addiction’ in the most efficient way. Furthermore to this, our star image for our performance needs to be portrayed correctly, coinciding with our genre, (indie rock) –  with the use of editing and the correct Mes en Scene, we will be able to convey this narrative/performance within our own (group) music video.

PITCH & FEEDBACK

Below is our group pitch for our music video, using the song ‘Otherside’ by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. It was vital that our group posed our ideas to our teacher to ensure we were on track in preparation for the production of our music video and that our proposal was going to be sufficient. As a result of completing this task, it broadened our understanding of strengths and weakness carried within the group and what we had to set ourselves in respective to goals and achievements. To add, we also had to add a list of strengths and targets that we are setting ourselves as a group.

Positives(6):

  • We have decided, as a group, on a clear narrative & performance which will  represent our song well as we have based our narrative on the theme of the song – battling prior addictions.
  • Our group decided on basing our music video in a location where low-key lighting has a visual representation to the mood, genre of our chosen song, also conveying to the audience the struggle the individual is facing, e.g. a room with little lighting, high walls and ceilings, a roulette wheel etc.
  • We have decided on the chosen MES for the male/female individuals who will be featuring in our music video (narrative), e.g. males wear full black suits, waist coats, bow ties and females wear black/coloured dresses connoting elegance, importance and the sophistication of the event.
  • We have, as a group, decided that the best way to represent our amplified narrative is to have the narrative coincide with the song lyrics and meaning, by doing so, the audience will be able to gain a sufficient understanding of what is happening within the music video and what this means using props e.g. a roulette wheel. Moving on, something bad will happen to the specific individual as a result of gambling and his reaction will connote the terror and struggle of battling prior addiction.
  • Our idea is something of an intriguing enigma which will hopefully engage our audience.
  • We have a focused but simplistic idea for our music video with an engaging and empowering theme.

Negatives(3):

  • We need to decide as a group what our band/performers are going to wear when being filmed for our music video.
  • As a group, we need to decide what is going to happen regarding our performance – who? what? where?
  • Making a decisions as to whether we want just a singer or a band in our music video.

 

FINAL MINI PITCH

My final mini pitch talks of the finalised ideas for my music video. Our music video uses the song I put forward (Otherside – Red Hot Chilli Peppers), which talks of prior addictions and the battles in which individuals have to go through to be successful. In our music video, we will be representing these ideas through both an amplified/illustrative narrative and performance. We have decided on how our star image will be represented throughout the production, the types of themes and issues which will occur within the video and the sort of promotion the video will provide for our audience. We will be discussing this pitch with our teacher, putting forward our ideas and we will receive feedback as to whether it will be suitable. As a result of completing this task, it aids our group massively with preparation for our music video, becoming more familiar with plans and keeping track of our organisational skills.

MINI PITCH

A mini pitch consists of creating a PowerPoint whereby you decide on a song that you would like to use for your own music video and then describe the type of narrative/performance that you would like to convey; for example, amplified, disjunctive or illustrative, what Mes en Scene you would like your star image to represented, and a slide which includes images/ideas on what your performer/star will wear, use as a prop, location and what makeup is suitable for the genre. I have created a PowerPoint with every aspect needed for a mini pitch, this will then be used to put forward to my group and with that, a pitch will be chosen for the final music video, created, including great detail and presented to our teacher.

MONTAGE PLANNING

The idea of this consisted of constructing a storyboard plan in order to produce a montage in preparation for the planning and creation of a music video. The group and I have chosen to use a variety of shots and angles, e.g. long shot, mid shot, over shoulder shot and close ups; this will aid us during our production of the montage, allowing us to convey themes and depict the story we are trying to address. As a group we have chosen three totally different scenes to illustrate within our, ‘curiosity killed the cat’ montage – venation blinds, phones and tables, each one of these scenes will hopefully represent our topic to our audience, resulting in a successful production.

For this task, we had to take it upon ourselves, in groups of 3-4,  to create a montage planning script in order to create the video itself. After our planning had taken place, we were required to go out and film our very own montage that will be using in preparation for creating our own music videos. To create our montage we had to use a software called, Premiere Pro, the aim was to create a montage using a variety of camera angles and Mes en Scene to convey the narrative – curiosity, nosy, inquisitiveness. Strengths:

  • Great clear use of the varied camera angles used within the clip.
  • A clear narrative, which is easily understandable for the audience watching.
  • Every shot taken was in focus, allowing the montage to be of high standard quality.
  • Everyone involved had a part to play within the montage.
  • Varied use of editing techniques.

Weaknesses:

  • Our montage didn’t include a transition.
  • Use of different locations.
  • Mes en Scene – boring (school uniform)

Within this, I have learnt how to adapt to and approach new software, this being Premiere Pro. I have learnt how to adjust, edit and create one whole clip from  many individual clips, adding music, text and to be able to export the montage to YouTube and my blog. From learning such technical skills throughout the process of creating a montage, I think this will definitely aid me when I come to create my own music video because I will be able to put what I have learnt to use in my music video, allowing me to convey the narrative to my audience.
