Lighting

Lighting can have a significant impact on a scene in a film. Highkey lighting connotes that the scene is meant to be bright and happy, and helps express these emotions with quite bright lights. Lowkey lighting emphasises a lot on the shadows and the dark rather than the light. Expressive lighting can be used to express dark moods and symbolise or obscure something.  Overall lighting can have a large impact on the meaning of a scene as it can helps express lots of different emotions of the scene (such as hapiness or sadness)  without the actor necessarily showing the emotions on their own faces.
