The Dark Knight Narrative Analysis

In the Dark Knight I don’t think that Batman’s journey is fully completed yet. He doesn’t end up receiving a treasure and returning to his status quo, however Batman does complete a few of those steps in between, wether or not they are conventionally completed like a regular superhero film. Instead of his new life being with a lover or being the loved sueprhero, he becomes a villain. His new life also starts off terribly as he has to take the blame for Harvey Dent’s death, despite Dent not being dead. No real resolution is reached in this film which leads me to believe that his journey isn’t complete and he still has much work to do.

Narrative Analysis Of Pans Labyrinth

Narrative analysis in Pans is very useful to us. This is because the narrative has different themes and different stories running side by side. You have Ofelias story, of her fantastical escape from reality, and Vidals story, fighting the rebels and finding out who the traitors amongst his ouptpost are.

How narrative study is useful for understanding the film:

  • It allows for a deeper understanding of Vidal and Ofelias intentions/ what they are trying to achieve.
  • It helps us understand the structure of each characters story.
  • We can get a better view of the themes of the film.
  • We learn the functions of the characters and what role they play in the narrative of the film.
  • We find out the intentions behind the characters in each conflict.

The Narrative Of Monsters Inc.

The Poster Tarek and I made in class.

In act one, the setup and disruption happens. The setup in Monsters Inc is quite long as it has to make sure that the audience watching can understand. Since it is a childrens film, the setup takes the extra bit of time as it is quite a complicated world that they live in. The setup introduces us to our main protagonists Mike and Sully. It shows us that they live in a world filled with monsters and that Mike and Sully work in a powerstation. This power station gets power from the screams of children. We get shown that some monsters are professional scarers which go and collect the screams. We are also shown how humans are considered to be toxic to monsters as a sock was brought back with one of the monsters and a “2319” was called, which shows monsters in hazmat suits destroying the sock.

The disruption introduces us to a problem that the protagonist/s have to fix in order to restore the things back to normal. In Monsters Inc. this is the introduction of the child Boo who comes into the monster world on Sullys’ tail. Mike and Sully then have to run away from the monsters in hazmat suits who are trying to decontaminate Mike and Sully and get rid of Boo.

Act two is where the climax occurs. Mike and Sully go on a journey to try to return Boo back to her world and room. They go through the factory trying to find Boos’ door and go to many different locations whilst trying to find the correct door. The antagonist of the movie Randall, who is Sullys rival for scaring, is chasing them down trying to stop them from returning Boo. They are also chased down by Mr Waternoose who is the false hero of the movie. The climax shows a conflict between the good and bad, but also how Mike and Sully overcome their own conflict as they split up when in the ice world but Mike comes back later to give something to Sully that helps them finish the journey. This makes Mike a donor as well as a protagonist.

Act three is has the resultion and denouement. In the resolution, Mike and Sully have their light bulb moment, the epiphany which helps them defeat the antagonist (Randall). They setup Mr Waternoose and make all the other monsters realise that he is the bad guy and none of the children are toxic.

The Denouement. This is the ending of the filn and is where the themes are shown to the audience. Monsters Inc ends with monsters realising humans aren’t toxic and that laughter creates more energy than screams do. This can make the audience see a bigger message of not to always believe what you are told be people just because they are of higher status/position.

Genre Poster Reflection

This poster was to show all the things included in a typical heist movie. We used black and white as the movies are normally quite bland in colours, and the poster identifies most, if not all of the common themes of a heist movie. It has the weapons, the planning sequence, something to steal from, the classic tech van, the range of characters you see and the equipment used to break in. It does lack some of the deeper details like the narrative of a typical heist movie.
