Risk assessment for narrative

In the preparation side of my music video, we have to complete a risk assessment of all of the possible risks we could face in the filming of our music video and how we are going to prevent them. We have also secured parental permission from our actors mentioning that at these specific days we would be taking them out to film our video. So we have properly evaluated all of the risks by doing this risk assessment:

Production Meeting for shoot 2 (Narrative)

Shown below is our Production meeting agenda for our narrative shoot:

Our main goal for the narrative is to get all of the shots required to make our video stand out to look at and sort of add suspense to it. These include different movement shots as well as still and have finalised our MES for our model.  Doing this makes us a lot more prepared in what we need and where and when we are shooting this specific shoot.

July 2

Test Shoot

These are the shots that we were planning on doing. However, it might have been quite boring to look at as we have not done any other alternative angles that might have looked a lot better to use in the narrative side in our video. We have to keep in mind different types of media language which would be effective to use in order to attract a large audience in watching our video. Little improvements like including cut to close ups and different effective angles would really make my video stand out from others which is our main goal. We have also focused on the specific type of media language we are going to use in order to make our video stand out a lot more than the others out there.

This clip is following the sequence of the angles increasing interest and engagement in the overall clip:

Without different camera angles:

So overall, the second clip is a lot more boring to look at as it does not use a variety of different shots. This goes to show that by using a variety of different camera angles in our video, would make it a lot more better and more engaging to look at.

Narrative Storyboard and shot list

By having a good idea of what we need to capture for the narrative side of this video is really useful to have as well as making our video have narrative sense to it is really important to have. By planning each shot methodically allows us to feel more prepared and confident in actually filming it (instead of turning up to our shoot and only capturing a small amount of the shots). We have planned each shot (by including a variety of shot distances) as well as including all of the appropriate media language in our video in order to make it stand our from the others. We also plan to include some film to edit in the video to also make the video pop and makes the video slow a lot more. Unlike the performance shoot, we are also going to try to include some reaction shots in it to represent how I feel in that specific moment. So overall feeling a lot more prepared  for the narrative shoot.

Music video Draft 1 – Rough cut

Below is my rough cut of my performance side of my music video:

In my opinion, I think that the video turned out well with a good variety of different camera angles as well as good facial expressions. There are some factors which I would improve on in order to make the video a lot better to look at such as possibly doing the “mysterious” looking scenes in a dark studio to add more mystery to it with the use of lights and darkness. Another idea being to possibly start the video of me singing closer to the camera so the audience could get a better connection with the star image instead of lip syncing further away from the camera. As well as extending a couple of clips as I think some are quite rushed and including possibly more jump cuts in it so it could flow a lot more in the rhythm of the music.

So the main points I need to do in order to improve my video are:

  • Film the mysterious scenes in a dark studio
  • Add the scenes of my singing closer to the camera first (the ones with the sunset in the background)
  • Include more fast paced edits making it flow with the music but also making sure that it does not look too rushed and the audience would be able to see each video clearly.

So overall, with a couple of improvements I think that this video would look good and stand out to the audience who is watching it.

Shoot One Reflection

Here are some screenshots from our video:

Evaluation of shoot:

I think that this shoot went really well, timing it well with the sunset really does give off a bourgeois look to it shown with the colour gold in the sun. I have also tried to experiment with many different angles which I thought turned out really well and cool to look at. Also including many different facial expressions suggesting that I would like to be like them. I tried to also include many cinematic and scenic views behind me (sunset and the sea) as well as the trees to make it stand out a lot more to look at.

What looks good and needs improving:

Positives:

  • All shots contained some scenic vibes to them
  • The way I expressed my facial expressions turned out well as well as general gestures
  • I made the most of the location I was in
  • I timed the body language as well as gestures in time with the music
  • We bought a visual shot list with us in order to stay organised in what we are trying to get out of it
  • I moved around in different spots so it does not look as repetitive to look at.

Things to improve on:

  • Possibly include more close up/mid-shots so the audience are more engaged in me
  • Filming more takes so we could get a more of a variety of shots to experiment with
  • Film a more of a variety of camera angles
  • Film more movement shots other than just tracking
  • Use a brighter costume/suit
  • Film in different times of the day to get a different perspective to it.

Production Meeting for shoot 1 (Performance)

In the preparation in the making of my music video, I have to complete a production meeting agenda so we are more prepared and know exactly what is happening where and when.

We would mainly be using natural lighting, and have responsibilities for the specific props we are going to use. I would be responsible for the prop money and Ash for the balloons. We are going to make sure that we include a variety of different shots and would not require any proper technical equipment in our video.

Star Image – The Performer

We have done some research in articles that talk about him (so how the media portrays him basically). This involves including different tweets about him as well as articles which really represent him and his career in music. Doing this helps us understand that the star is not just ordinary but extraordinary (Dyer).

By roughly knowing how Conan Gray portrays himself in the media, we could also understand his metanarrative. We also have placed words around the photos we have included a word which summarises what those photos represent and connote when looking at it.

We really do want our star to be unique in a way that he is just not like all of the other stars out there whilst still fitting in with the different conventions of our genre. We would like our audience to be engaged with our video to feel comfortable when watching our video as all of the conventions would match with other videos that has the similar genre to ours. Having different conventions to the same genre videos would most likely get the audience to reject the text and not pay any interest to the video, so by having similar conventions would make the audience feel a lot more engaged in the video.

So by having a mood board of images, we have much more of a understanding in what my star is going to wear as well as developing a good understanding in the different conventions that are typically used in my genre I am going for.

By knowing the key conventions and different types of Mise-en scene I am going to include gives me a much better understanding in what I am going to include in my video. This also being beneficial in the making of my production meeting agenda as we have prepared all of the costumes and different types of Mise-en scene we are going to use in the music video.

Conventional Shots for a Performance with in the Genre

By having the appropriate conventions are really important to have as if I did a music video with the wrong conventions/not recognisable then the audience would simply reject the text and not pay any interest in it. Our music video would have to try to include a repertoire of elements in it in order to make it stand out to the audience, I think that our song choice does fit into our genre really well which enables us to have an understanding in what is conventional to have so the audience would sort of expect it and would engage in it a lot more as it would fit into the genre quite well. Having an longshot for an example would reveal the type of costume the star is wearing as well as the stars type of body language the star is using. These are all types of conventions that the audience would be used to seeing in these specific types of music videos.

Shown below is a Padlet we made to help demonstrate the types of camera anglers which are conventional in our specific genre of song we are using:
