This is England Character Analysis

Here is my analysis of the major characters within This is England. For each character I had to look at some of their key scenes and analyse what that established for them as a character. After that I made a table in order to show what relevance they had to the overall story, what impact they had on Shaun and how they reflect the themes of the film.

This is England British Social Realism, Narrative & Genre

Here is an analysis of several british social realism films. The reason I did this is to establish what a british social realism film is all about in preperation for my analysis of This is England. Here I found out that many of these films have overlapping themes of poverty, conflict and class.

This is England Montage

This is a collection of 9 shots from the montage at the start of This is England. These shots show off what England was like at the time of the film being set (the 80’s).

The music in the background of the montage is ’54 – 46 was my number’

Genre: Reggae

The song is about a man getting arrested due to marijuana possesion. Reggae, as a genre, was heavily adopted by skinheads of the time which could be seen as a slight juxtaposition due to the genre having a backgrounf in black culture and skinheads being stereotypically extremely right-wing politically.

The songs timing along with the montage exemplifies some of the more sinister moments, such as someone throwing a molotov cocktail into a crowd or someone being blown up. It is also relevant as the film is set in the 80’s where genres such as reggae were growing in popularity.

Pan’s Labyrinth Final Essay Feedback

For my first essay I think I did very well as I used several links to macro features as well as the contexts of the film. I also used key language throughout my essay to enhance it slightly. This got me a 21/28 which is equivilent to a high H6, nearly a H7. To improve for future I have made a small list of things I can improve upon.
