Critical Reflection Essay

How do your products represent social groups or issues?

I aimed to represent the star as playful, youthful and mysterious. I was able to achieve this in the Digipak through mise-en-scene, which helps evidence Dyer’s star image theory. Inadvertently I was evidencing the extraordinary side of  the paradox of the star by doing extravagant and excessive unique make-up consisting of bright colours and contemporary shapes helping connote the playful and individualistic theme of the artist. I aimed to also represent the star as mysterious; through posing and lighting I was able to achieve this. The star was not in a regular normal standing or sitting pose and instead was posing with her arms up or turning in certain ways with the lighting of neon lights projected onto her; the audience would have decoded this pose as one that has connotations of power and enigma. Due to the use of lighting the star seemed to be staring at her own shadow which helps show the star’s ideology and connotes the symbolic code (as proposed by Barthes) of introspection; conveying the idea that the star is in her own mind. The genre was indie pop which we aimed to represent. Indie is authentic and honest whereas the pop aspect is popular, modern and up to date where both of these genres convey the artist’s persona, being shown through her slightly quirky, vintage clothes shop costumes and extravagant make-up, yet still being able to be represented as relatable and authentic, this could also be seen as a cultural code as proposed by Barthes, as only certain audiences would appreciate and read this correctly. The indie pop genre can be argued to have a semic code of being free wheeling and organic; Using distorted fonts mixed with the classic fonts and a range of colours varying from neon pinks, blues and greens to them switching to dark reds, browns and black helps connote the stylised aspect of the genre, linking back to the semic code of being known for being free wheeling and organic. The use of distorted fonts could also show a symbolic code with the audience seeing this as a representation of something controversial or playful.

How do your products engage with the audience?

Engaging my audience was the main aim when creating the social media page. My audience are typically young females who are playful and have a desire to fit in with all the new trends and crowds. I ensured my SMP contained all the elements that Blumer and Katz would argue are essential elements to engage any audience such as social interaction, entertainment for the audience, create a sense of personal identity and inform the audience. These all needed to be incorporated into the SMP; as Hall argues if the repertoire of elements is ‘off-piste’ then the audience could not get a preferred reading of it and reject the text.  An example that provides social interaction for the audience are highlights/stories. I used highlights named ‘Q&A’ to allow the audience to have a more personal relationship with the star allowing them to ask questions directly to the artist. This provided social interaction for the audience whilst also supplying information to the audience as the star could reply to any question asked about future releases, merchandise and more. Another example which provided a personal identity for the audience was releasing merchandise for the audience and posting about charities the artist supports. By creating merchandise the audience can purchase and wear it creates a personal identity for them as they can now wear clothes that represent the star; someone they look up to and find personal connections in. By having the star post publicly about a charity she supports it allows the audience to one, be informed about issues whilst also again, creating a personal identity for them as they idolize the star and can now understand what they support themselves whilst also getting influence from the artist. Finally to engage a wider, larger audience I posted a video teaser for the upcoming music video, and posted highlights including a countdown of the release of Maeve’s upcoming album. By doing this it created a build-up and excitement for the fans which could cause them to talk about the artist more creating social interaction for the fans whilst also engaging a wider audience for the star.

How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?

I researched multiple indie pop music videos and quickly discovered they are mainly performance with some features of a narrative (70:30). The music videos for the genre mainly consisted of a colour theme of  light pastel colours which seemed to be created by putting a colour filter over the video; the videos also tended to have a positive, happy narrative throughout. We followed these conventions whilst also subverting them at points. One convention we followed was the 70:30 performance narrative layout. Most of the video consisted of our star lip-syncing in different looks whilst containing a few scenes scattered throughout in a non chronological order of the artist telling a narrative throughout the video. Another convention I followed in parts of the video was the colour theme of light pastel, dainty colours usually in a high-key lighting for example and the beginning of the music video the artist is sat in the setting a field of white daisies on a sunny day in the costume of a flowy white dress. By using these elements which Lacey would say are the repertoire-of-elements it allowed my target audience to see what they expected to see. Altman would also argue this is a blueprint for a conventional, successful and easily recognisable indie pop video. Following the conventions was successful for my music video however I also challenged them. Instead of having the recurring theme of happiness and positivity with a colour theme of light colours I went against this by having part of the narrative scenes and performance scenes featuring the artist in low-key lighting with her dressed in the costume of dark black clothing with dark make-up; to also subvert the convention of positivity the artist was shown covered in blood implying a negative emotion and feeling to the audience – something they wouldn’t expect to see in an indie pop music video.

How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

The mission statement of our artist features descriptors of youthfulness, controversy, mystery and authenticity; the products in our package create a cohesive representation of these descriptions of our artist; Dyer’s Paradox of the Star is shown through the artist’s features as it shows both sides of being ordinary and extraordinary. Our brand needed to be recognisable to the audience so I needed to blend the three products; Digipak, social media page and music video so that they are easily distinguishable in the same campaign. For example some of the star image my audience would expect to see was the artist’s raw authenticity with controversy tied in to represent the young, unapologetic side of the star. This was evident in the music video; the artist sat in the setting of a field of daisies dressed in white  connoting a pure youthful feature to the stars persona however also in the music video including frames zooming into the artist showing her face and body covered in the prop of splattered blood with a emotionless look in her eyes connoting back to the descriptor of the artist being controversial. However in the digipak this was juxtaposed by using the symbolic reference of the artist being  playful and amiable with bright pink neon lights projected over her. The semic code of relatability and young expression and the cultural code of the setting are all clear examples of what Barthes would term the narrative code. Our audience will be able to decode the idea that although the star has an extraordinary side of uniqueness and out of the box creativity, the star also has the ordinary side of being young and authentic with flaws. The music video and digipak were vastly promoted on the social media page also helping create a brand. Fans would expect to be excited and teased over future releases and future projects whilst also consuming the star’s ordinary credible teenage self. The social media page also created a sense of involvement for the fans with them being able to actively absorb the descriptors of the artist on a more personal level. Having a clear and understandable mission statement allowed me to easily create and assign a brand to the star whilst projecting this through the three products; it also helped me send out the same message throughout all the products by using integrated advertising. For example, having a similar colour theme throughout the music video, digipak and SMP of bright neon colours which were used from a projection light allowed the audience to have a clear preferred reading; this was also evidenced by the use of quirky and different camera angles used throughout the three products, specifically high shots. The goal was achieved as Hall says having a clear preferred reading allowed me to encode the same message throughout the three products for the audience to decode and understand the same narrative and ideology; these stemmed from the descriptors in the mission statement.

Social Media Page Final Draft

Below is our final social media page for our artist Maeve. Click on images to access full social media page.

New Posts

For our final draft we added four more posts. The first post consisted of three images from different parts of the ‘killing boys’ music video by Maeve. The post promoted that that the music video was released and explained how fans can easily watch the video.

Our next post was promoting the release of Maeve’s new album ‘Adolescence’. The post consisted of the album cover, inside left pane and back cover with the tracklist. We wanted excitement and interaction over Maeve’s new album so in the caption we asked fans to comment their favourite songs from the album. The post also informed fans where to listen and download the album.

Following the album release we posted a tour poster for Maeve’s Europe tour. The tour poster matched the genre and star image of Maeve, with the caption helping inform fans where they can buy tickets.

Our last post for the social media page was a Grammy nomination for Maeve’s recently released album ‘adolescence’. In this post Maeve showed gratitude to her team and fans by thanking them in the caption. This post was beneficial as it showed Maeve’s ordinary side by her thanking fans and her team but also showed her extraordinary side by showing how big of a star she is by getting nominated for high profile awards. We believe this was a good final post as it is a good round off to show the artistry of Maeve.

New Highlights

For the finishing touches on our SMP we added more highlights and stories so we could keep fans updated with information and news about Maeve without overloading her page with posts.

Some changes to the highlights we made were adding two more new highlights which were ‘merch’ and ‘action aid’. We also added thumbnail  images to all six highlight categories in order for the fans to find information more efficiently.

In our ‘merch’ highlight we added two stories showing Maeve’s merchandise. This was a successful highlight as it told the fans the merch was available now and included a link to Maeve’s website to show where the merchandise could be bought.

In the ‘action aid’ highlight we added two stories. One personal story written by Maeve saying that all net proceeds from the sales and streams from the single ‘kiwi’ on her new album ‘Adolescence’ will help fund action aid. The second story promotes a post on action aids own Instagram helping her fans find out more information. This was a successful story as it informed Maeve’s fans whilst also showing her fans her morals and beliefs.

Website

A marketing strategy we used for our artist was creating a website. This is a useful tool for her fans as it allows them to access all of Maeve’s information in an easy and quick way. By adding a link to the website in the bio of Maeve’s Instagram it makes the website visible to fans when they first click on her page.

The website includes: A home page featuring images of Maeve and promotions for her such as her tour and a image promoting her album which is ‘out now’. An about page which informs fans about the artist including the mission statement for her helping old and news fans have a clear understanding of what Maeve and her music is like. The Adolescence page features the front cover of the album and all the tracks which are on it. The killing boys page features an image from the music video ‘killing boys’ with a YouTube link to the video. The tour page features the tour poster for her 2022 Europe tour with all locations and dates included. Finally the shop page shows all of Maeve’s merchandise with prices and images.

Evaluation

In conclusion I am very happy with how the final result of the SMP turned out. The page uses all aspects of the Blumer and Katz theory providing entertainment, information, social interaction and a personal identity for fans. A variety of post on the page such as her at home playing the guitar and behind the scenes photos for photoshoots helps show the use of Dyer’s extraordinary and ordinary star image theory. The bio of the page contains all important information fans would needs to know such as release dates and links to important sites. The main aim of our SMP was to release the music video and album in the most conventional and successful way for fans; the music video and album isn’t released instantly and abruptly instead teasers and behind the scenes pictures are posted before the release, helping build up engagement and excitement for fans. The final successful outcome of the social media page is that in her mission statement describes her as playful and youthful which can be seen through the whole of the SMP.

Social Media Page Draft 2

Below is our second draft of our social media page for our artist Maeve. Click on images to access full social media page.

Since our first draft we have added three more posts. After analysing our first draft we came to the conclusion we needed more posts of Maeve showing an ordinary side in order for her audience and fans to be able to relate to her; to achieve this we added a post of Maeve posing with her guitar talking about how she spends her Sunday evening. To build excitement for Maeve’s fans we also added a short gif as a teaser for her upcoming music video ‘killing boys’. Finally we added a post of Maeve on a vogue cover; after analysing our first draft we came to a conclusion we needed more synergy and cross media convergence for our audience. By featuring Maeve on a magazine with an interview included it allows our audience to consume more media of Maeve besides just her new album and music video.

(click on image to access full social media page)

We added stories and highlights to Maeve’s page so that the audience has more media to consume. Highlights are a great way to show fans behind the scenes of the artist, show countdowns to upcoming events or update fans on the artists day to day behaviours. Highlights improve audience engagement with fans being able to contribute in aspects such as a Q&A or polls. One highlight we did which proves successful was our Q&A highlight; this allowed the audience to ask us about upcoming projects and allowed them to know more about Maeve. It helped show us what the audience wanted to see; helping us plan future posts. An example of this was one fan asked about merchandised which we then teased with a highlight post; then for our next posts we knew we needed to post and promote Maeve’s merchandise.

Screen Castify Teacher Feedback:

After listening to our teachers feedback it allowed us to have targets for our next draft. Some of these which are:

  • Reply to fans comments to create a social interaction and show ordinary side.
  • Tease or post a tour promotion to build more excitement for fans.
  • Show Maeve supporting a charity to help show her morals.
  • Promote hard copies of her album.
  • Potentially more cross media convergence – TV interview or radio appearance.
  • Keep the countdown going till music video and album is released.
  • Create a website as a clear call to action to allow fans to see all aspects of the artist; tour, merch, album etc.

Social Media Page Draft 1

Below is our first draft for our social media page for our artist Maeve. Click on images to access full social media page.

The username for our artists social media page is ‘maeveofficial’. This is beneficial for the artist as it is a clear and understandable username; by incorporating the artists name first and then the word official it is easy for the audience to identify this is Maeve’s only and official instagram account. The bio is short and simple; the artists name is stated so again, it is easy for the audience to identify her instagram page. In the bio the only text is ‘Adolescence out 28/12’ this gives the audience only one thing to focus on; her new album and also helps build up excitement and talk about the album and artist.

The profile picture helps connote Maeve’s persona and what she is known for; being playful, quirky and modern. The image is upside down with bright colours making the image interesting which can help attract a further audience to the page. The image only features the artist Maeve and nothing else so again, is helping keep it simple and appealing for the audience.

So far, the social media page only has four posts which are in a good conventional order. The first post including one professional image of Maeve with a clear introduction in the caption helping fans/audiences navigate and understand her page. The next three posts focus on her fans and music, with a post thanking her fans for the support on her music, a teaser for her upcoming music video ‘killing boys’ to help build excitement, and finally a behind the scenes post to help share more aspects of her upcoming music with fans.

Self Assessment

By completing a self assesment for the first draft of the SMP it has proven helpful as I can compare what has been done to make the SMP conventional and helps me identify what I can do in future drafts to make the SMP contain technical conventions that will help attract and reach the correct target audience.

Target For Next Draft:

  • Post more images showing the artists ‘ordinary’ side in order for audiences to be able to relate to her.
  • Use synergy for example get the artist to promote/post brands that would appeal to the audience.
  • Post a Q&A post/highlight so that the artists fans can ask questions and have a personal connection with the star; this will also help show a mix of her ordinary and extraordinary side.
  • Use cross media convergence for example link the artist to other sources of media such as interviews and youtube videos.
  • To help not over posting create highlights to keep audience updated with album and music video releases and behind the scenes.

Social Media Page Terminology

In order to know the key technical conventions of a social media page I analysed an artist social media platform similar to our star image and genre. I looked at their target audience, different marketing campaigns they used and the technical conventions in order for when I make my artists social media page it contains all the relevant conventions and reaches the correct target audience.

Digipak Draft 3

Below is our draft 3 of our Digipak and images of it in a CD case so that we could get an understanding of what a real album looks like and how we can improve. Using our teachers feedback we made changes to make the album more conventional and match the brand of our artist more. We changed the front cover image as we felt it didn’t match the genre and the themes we wanted to portray such as youth and mystery; we also found the old front over image was too dull so by adding a bright pink close up image it helps connote the theme of playfulness.

Feedback From Peers – What Genre Does it Represent?

To help us know if our Digipak matches the genre (indie pop) and to know if it helps portray the star image, metanarrative and branding we asked peers to say out of the seven genres which one they thought our Digipak represented

Pop: //////

EDM: /

Rock:

Country:

Indie: /////

R&B: //

Rap/Hip-Hop:

After receiving feedback from our peers it has benefitted us as we have learned our Digipak does show the genre however certain conventions of the Digipak may be misleading of the genre; this will allow us to edit a final draft in order to make sure out star image and branding can help portray across the correct genre of music.

Digipak Draft 2

Below is our draft 2 of our Digipak where we have incorporated feedback from draft 1 to get an improved draft. We have added an inside left pane and inside right pane to make the album more conventional and have played around with new fonts and colour schemes to help match the themes and genre of our artist.

Screencastify With Teacher Feedback:

Targets for Draft 3:

  • Find another font for the artists name (Maeve) for the front cover to add more variety
  • Make the background on front cover pop more – brighten it and potentially add colour behind
  • Make the artist more fresh by editing on photoshop (sharpen, brighten etc.)
  • Enlarge photo on the back cover to make artist stand out more
  • Edit using photoshop to make eyes more white and lips more pink
  • Find a picture to go inside the TV

Timeline and Marketing Ideas

In order to know what posts we are going to put on our social media page we made a marketing campaign of a timeline for each post in chronological order, each post varies with some helping show the extraordinary side of the artist such as photoshoots, video teasers, award shows etc and the ordinary side with posts such as being with family and doing charity work. Planning will also allow us to get the posts up at the right time and be organised. When planning this we considered AIDA and the Blumer and Katz theory where we will be providing entertainment, social interaction, information and personal identity to our artists fans. To help my understanding of social media marketing more and to help when posting on our social media page I analysed three successful marketing campaigns from popular artists. These campaigns featured different marketing strategies such as gorilla marketing, viral marketing and sponsors and promotions.

Post Planning:

Phoebe Bridges did a marketing campaign that had less stunts and instead got her fans involved. Due to lockdown Phoebe decided to launch small competitions and sessions for her fans, she launched the ‘Garden song contest’ where she invited fans to create their own version of Phoebe’s ‘Garden Song’ video. This was a low-budget video and helped show Pheobe’s personality and dark humour. This was a successful marketing campaign and increased the virality of the original video, it also created multiple opportunities to re-push it and resulted in new and old fans to interacting online.

To help build excitement over her new upcoming album Charli XCX archived all of her instagram feed and announced a zoom where 1000 of her fans could join. This helped build up talk and excitment over Charli, helping promote her album. The Zoom code was tweeted one minute before the event began, and on the zoom call she announced the album name and dealine. Each week during the campaign there was a livestreamed Zoom call with guests including Maisie Williams, Paris Hilton which was a huge benefit for Charli as she brought more fan bases together and had people talking about her and the new album.

To commemorate Coldplays 20th anniversery, Warner Music Asia teamed up with Firepit Technlogy to develop an original campaign website for the band’s Asian fanbase across seven countries. Fans were invited to login to the website to enjoy the campaign playlist on Spotify. As Spotify streams increased in a particular country, this was reflected in a brightening of that section of the map. Each country also had an additional progress bar to add a competitive element to fans’ listening experience. This was a successful marketing campaign for Coldplay as due to the competitiveness of the competition it resulted in Coldplay getting more Spotify streams and resulted in Asian fans having more interaction together.

Digipak Draft 1

Below is our draft 1 of our Digipak. It includes two panes, the front and back.

Self Assessment:

Targets For Next Draft:

  • Add more colours to the front page to make it less bland.
  • Photoshop images to make them pop more – sharpen image, brighten eyes etc.
  • Place an image of the artist in the TV.
  • Have a wider variety of fonts.
  • More technical conventions.

Evaluation of Shoot

Overall I would say our shoot was successful, we were organized and had everything we needed and got over 200 images which we can incorporate in the Digipak. The mise-en-scene was almost perfect for the shoot, with detailed modern butterfly make-up and multiple costumes consisting of bright colours it helped us convey our genre. One negative is we did not fully achieve what looks and photos we wanted therefore we are going to do a second shoot in order to get the images we want for example a better front cover photo and more close ups of the star for the inside pages of the Digipak. Another improvement we could do for our second shoot is change the aperture on the camera in order to get more exposed photos.
