Initial song ideas for a video – Mini pitch

This is my pitch for a music video idea, the song is called ‘The Hype’ by the musical duo, Twenty One Pilots.  The performance would be in the theatre studio so we could use the dark atmosphere, there would be a mini stage and it would look like a small bar that the band is perfoming in. The narrative would be about the main star, the singer of the band, who thinks he is alone because no one else is like him and then he eventually finds a small path that leads him to the place where the performance is happening and he is let on the stage and starts to sing the song and the perfomacne and narrative get connected.

Music Video Form & Conventions

These are four Music Videos that I watched and analyzed to help build my understanding of how music videos are made and what they can infer.  Music Videos are made in three distinct categories, 100% Performance, 100% narrative and a mix of the two at a 50/50 ratio. These different categories create the conventions and are used to help portray the star image and the genre.

This research will help me when consider the different factors and styles of video when creating my music video.

Favorite Music Video from Former Student

Technical conventions.

It has good lip syncing and it edits to the beat. It uses the rule of thirds effectively by keeping the main star in the centre or to the side with loads of lead space.

Narrative and performance.

There is a 50/50 ratio of narrative and performance. The narrative is about someone who quits their job and starts living a comfortable life instead.

How has the star been created

The star has a certain view on life. This is clearly shown when he rips his ID after leaving his job.  The video has been styled with colours and patterns reflecting the ideas that the Star has.

This is my analysis of an old students music video. I like this music video because it has a good representation of the star and the Mise-en-scene is shown very well through the use of patterns and a mixture of colours. Its editing is very successful as it edits to the beat and the lip sycing is done well.  The Camera is used creatively and has multiple interesting angles but I feel like there could have been more close ups.

This will help me analyse, decode and deconstruct future music videos when considering the success criteria.

Preliminary Task, Montage

We needed to create a mood montage and an accompanying shot list and storyboard. This will help me get the basics of what is necessary for a music based video.

This is my mood montage and shot list.

We used the shot list and storyboard to help assist us in getting a variety of shots for our montage and to help us plan the transitions.  We also had to plan to edit for a narrative sense, this would help us convey the themes that we are trying to show. It will also help us to remember to cut to close up when we are editing and filming as well as to make a suitable atmosphere .

Strengths

  1. The music choice fits the theme of the video.
  2. The Editing speed also suits the song
  3. The choice of location also works well.

Weaknesses

  1. The cuts could have been more fluid.
  2. The transitions could have been better filmed.
  3. We could have done better transitions.

Detailed Music Video Analysis

This is my analysis of “Chained to the Rhythm” by Katy Perry. Analysing this video has helped me undertsand how  techniques are used for camera, editing and Mise-en-scene to create a Illustrative, attractive and entertaining music video that folows the conventions and repitoire of elements to avoid a disjunctive music video that avoids the genre.  It also shows how a music video can be created for a specific genre and how it connects to real world issues and highlights them for the public. I also know how an amplified star image can be created and represented in forms of perfmace and narrative environment.
