Chosen Adverts

Any conventional magazine includes adverts to interest the target audience as well as raise awareness of a product/service for the Business or Company. I have used Pinterest to support me with my research.  Out of all my options, I have chose these two adverts for my music magazine as they are conventional to my genre and interest my target audience.

Rita Ora Live in Bangkok 2019 | Eventpop อีเว้นท์ป็อป | Eventpop

Dr Martens - L Y D I A W H I T M O R E

These were my final advert choices for my magazine. For my first advert I have chosen the Rita Ora tour poster advert because I know my target audience will be interested as she represents pop which is the genre of my magazine. The second advert I chose was an advert on Doc Martens, this advert constitutes the fashion trend during the 90s. My target audience are mainly young people that listen to pop music and enjoy going to concerts and festivals. This is why I have included a advert with details of a concert as I know my target audience will be interested.

This is my second draft of my double page spread for my music magazine. I have changed many aspects and have listed them below;

WHAT’S NEW:

  • I brightened the image of my model so it wasn’t as dull
  • Changed the colour of the questions
  • Added lines to enhance the shape of the image

WHAT’S NEXT:

  • Move the writing of “Zoe Carre” more to the centre of the pink block
  • Move the circle up more

This is my second draft of my contents page for my music magazine. I have completely changed everything on my contents page and feel much happier the way it is now.

WHT’S NEW:

  • Both images and the placing of them
  • Changing of text colour
  • Layout of the text and images
  • Added in coloured shapes to make it more exciting and bold, it adds colour and fun to the page which fits in with my genre

WHAT’S NEXT:

  • I want to move the image of my model down so that it looks as if she’s sitting on the floor as opposed to floating on the page
  • I want to brighten the image of my model so that it doesn’t look as dull
  • Remove some of the text down the left hand side of my page as I’ve written some word twice
  • Move the writing next to the small image so that it fits into the circle proportionally

Second Draft Of Front Page

Above is my second draft of my front cover for my music magazine. I changed a few elements within my magazine to make it even better, however I am not 100% happy with this draft so I would life to change a few things. I have listed the aspects I have changed, and what I want to change for my third and final front cover.

WHAT’S NEW:

  • I have added more cover lines to make the front cover more interesting
  • Removed her last name so that it’s just ‘Lucy’ as it’s more catchy
  • Moved the image of my model slightly

WHAT’S NEXT:

  • Adjust her tan so that it’s even throughout
  • Add more spacing between her name
  • Potentially get rid of “The UK’s NO 1 pop magazine’ as not sure if it looks too much

First Draft Of Double Page Spread

This is my first draft of my double page spread for my music magazine. I have used InDesign and Photoshop to produce this. There are lots of aspects that will need changing and editing, however I am satisfied with it as a first draft. Since my model’s trousers are green I decided to use that same colour as a background behind the text of her name, however I still want to keep to the theme of using pink as this is what I used for my front cover and contents page. Below I have listed elements I am happy with and things I want to change to improve my double page spread;

3 elements I am happy with;

  • The placing/positioning of my model facing the article.
  • The colour palette of green and incorporating pink to match my first draft and contents page.
  • The text of “An insight into Celebrity life” as it frames the face nicely.

5 elements I need to improve on;

  • More text down the side of my model, as currently it is an awkward space. Potentially moving her into the middle more so I can have text each side of her.
  • Add more pink onto the page to add a variety of colours but also so that my front page and contents page all match.
  • Add a quote said by my model to the pink circle.
  • Change her name to “Zoe C’ or something similar as it is a more catchy name for a star.
  • Add an eye catching title to the page.

Overall I am really pleased with how my images have come out despite the lighting in some pictures. I have a good selection to choose from for my contents page and double page spread. My favourite images have been shortlisted and are shown below;

I have chosen these images as these are my favourite from the shoot, this is because my model is positioned in a way that shows off her outfit in different angles within the photos. I am pleased that I used the white studio as I managed to get clear images with a plain background that allowed the green, flared trousers to really stand out. I am aiming to use one of these images to engage with the target audience as I am planning on having my model cut out and looking towards the article, this will make my magazine interesting and also make aware to the audience the the star is engaging with the magazine too.

Production Meeting Agenda For Second Photoshoot

To prepare for my second photoshoot for my double-page spread I have created a production meeting agenda so that I am ready and well organised so that everything goes according to plan. I have added in accessories, outfits, makeup and hairstyles, props and the locations of where I will be shooting. By using this time to fully plan out the essentials of a shoot it will benefit me when coming to completing the shoot so that I get the necessary images needed and that everything runs smoothly.

Draft Feature Article

I have drafted an interview for my double-page spread and used the sheet below to help me plan.

FIRST DRAFT

“A New Life”  Interview with Zoe Carre

All that’s been spoken about recently is the 23 year old, internet sensation Zoe C. As a teen, at just 18 years of age Zoe set up her own Youtube Channel where she would upload videos of her singing the music from her favourite artists Whitney Houston, Britney Spears and The Spice Girls. After 5 years of hard work and practising it led to her writing her very own song called ‘All It Takes”, her new hit single has reached number 1 in the charts, which is a huge achievement in itself. Being as young as 23, Zoe is going to have great opportunities coming her way. After years of singing her dreams of being a 90’s pop star was well underway, and that this was just the beginning.

I managed to sit down with Zoe myself and ask her a few questions about her new life as a young female singer and what inspired her to write her own music. For all the desperate fans out there, the wait is concluded as I will be bringing you the latest information. So, without further ado I welcome Zoe Carre.

  • How has your life changed now you are in the public eye?

“Well, just simply walking to the shop I get noticed. I hear my name being shouted and people trying to take pictures of me, it’s absolutely crazy and a bit scary at the same time as people know where I am and try to follow me around, so I really don’t feel like I have much privacy anymore which does give me slight anxiety. So I do try and avoid going out on my own, I feel much safer when I’m with a family member or a friend”.

  • When was the first time you got recognised in public?

“The first time I got recognised was when I was in my local town in Manchester. I was with my boyfriend and a group of young people approached me and asked if I would take a picture with them, of course I did and they were so lovely. However it’s still very surreal to me that I am now others Idol’s, as I still have them myself!’.

  • What will we be seeing from you in the near future?

“Well, at the moment I’ve only created 1 song, but hopefully when I have written more then I would love to create an album. I have always dreamed of singing on stage at my own tour so this is my next goal for the future. It would definitely be a huge achievement and I’m going to work towards it”.

  • What advice would you give others who are wanting to become songwriters?

“For me, I engaged in something that was my passion and what I wanted my songs to relate to. In this case it was that lifted the spirits of others and made them happy. Once you find something you can express your feelings to, the lyrics will come naturally to you. This can either be passed experiences or even dreams of yours that you can make become real through the love and passion of songwriting. You need to really be in the moment. The key is to not think too much into it or overthink it otherwise you will be constantly changing it when actually it probably will be perfect the way it is.

  • Who inspired you to become a singer?

“I’ve always had a passion for singing, I’m always listening to music whatever I’m doing. But my favourite singer is Whitney Houston and she was the one that inspired me to put my voice out there and write my own music. Personally, I find her songs very meaningful and I hold them close to my heart, so when I wrote my own song ‘All It Takes’, I made sure the lyrics I choose represented confidence, happiness and resilience, as these are the things that inspired me to write my own song and I hope that this song can inspire others to do what makes them happy.”

MP3 RECORDING

I have recorded myself reading out my first article as it will be useful for me to listen back and notice any mistakes or changes that need to be made.

It was great to catch up with Zoe and find out how her career started and what’s in store for her. We at GKP can see how enthusiastic she is about her singing and music and we wish her the best of luck for the exciting times ahead.Next week we have Annabel Creed joining us to bring us all the newest gossip on her new relationship. See you next week!

Langauge Analysis

Within a music Magazine there is a double-page spread usually featuring either an interview, review or an article based around a Celebrity. These elements contain different meanings and objectives whilst also using dissimilar language features and techniques such as headlines and titles in order to seek the attention of their target audience. The topics/storyline included must have a particular balance of being informing and well entertaining in order for the audience to gain interest and continue reading.

I have chosen to analyse an article that contains an interview, as it’s a possibility that I will be including one in my music magazine for my double-page spread. By reading through and understanding the different journalistic techniques used I will gain an understanding of what elements to include in my own interview and how to lay the article out. This will give me a wider range of inspiration and will support me with producing a well informative, entertaining and professional article.

Below I have analysed the journalistic language used within a 2015 Billboard double page spread featuring Adam Lambert, ‘Don’t Look Back’ by Shirley Halperin.

The above magazine article is about an individual, Adam Lambert opening up about his struggles of stardom and reflecting on his career, sexuality and relationships with others whilst being in the music industry. Firstly, Shirley Halperin uses an enlarged image of Adam Lambert to instantly indicate to the audience the article is about him, with his name and the article storyline next to him. The opening introductory sentence quotes “It’s hard for me to be happy with things”, this correlates to the story he explains further on in the interview.

As the reader, we know that this article is about an interview that has taken place because of the direct quotes weaved throughout the article. The article is written in third person and laid out in 3 columns, telling Adam Lambert’s story in chronological order with an image of the star singing, positioned in the middle of the page surrounded by text- giving the reader a more visual image of Adam Lambert performing on stage. The text written on the image states exactly when and where the image was taken and giving reference to who he was playing with; ‘Lambert (left) on stage with Queen’s Brian Maylin Amsterdam on Jan. 30.’ This allows the audience to really involve themselves by taking in the information being explained and understanding the pressures of performing and giving the audience what they want, forcing the audience to feel a sense of sympathy for him- as well as this the audience have a deeper insight into the vunerability he is feeling when other well known celebrity names are mentioned during the interview, big names such as Caitlyn Jenner and Sam Smith and the similar struggles they have faced whilst being in the spotlight as they’re stories have been visual in the media previously. Having the whole interview being written out in third person gives the ability to the audience to be inside of the stars thoughts and feelings and give deeper experiences of the scenes that are currently present in his life.

Throughout the article we are unaware of the presence of the journalist, which can be slightly unconventional to the usual ‘interview style’ however we do know Shirley Halperin is behind all of this as stated on the first page. This means that all Adam Lambert’s answers constantly flow into the other providing us with one story by leaving no breaks for the questions being asked. This actually gives the story more of a personal feel helping the reader engage with the star on a more one-to-one level which allows this to give a different view on celebrity life, showing that although he is a Celebrity and appears to be extraordinary he is just like any ordinary person.

The journalist has used different language features such as alliteration and metaphors to convey who Adam Lambert is as an individual. Using words such as disconnect, unsettled and lonely is giving specific emotions on how the star is feeling and allowing the reader to feel sympathetic towards him. Overall most of the language used, especially at the beginning is quite negative and disheartening however as we come towards the end of the article we see that the conclusion becomes positive with Adam Lambert explaining that “Life’s about exploring new things”. In my opinion the aim of this article is to show others that although things can be tough at different times during you’re life, they do get better and the way to overcome this is to look on the brighter side of life by getting involved in new things and experiencing new experiences. Lambert then states “Like, what’s next?”, this rhetorical question is the last line of the interview and has the most affect because it shows how far he has come and what is next for him as a Celebrity.
