Social Media Page – Key Terms

In order to gain a better understanding in the vital fundamentals of a social media page, I analysed a social media page for a band within our genre.

I chose to analyse Green Day’s social media page, as I feel their music is very similar to the song that we have chosen, and personally I am a big fan of Green Day. Doing this I was able to find out how they had established a marketing campaign as well as promoting the brand.

The Look Book – The Package

Below is a moodboard including any kind of fonts, images, styles, ideas and colours which we will consider using for our digipak. This will give us a better idea on how to sell our brand to our target audience via integrated advertising, and will give us inspiration when moving on to the designing process.

Focusing forward, we have a much better plan when designing the blueprint for the different pages of our digipak. We have a source of inspiration to assemble a key repertoire of elements within our brand’s style.

Our Mission Statement – The Package Brand

Here is our presentation where we do an in depth analysis on how we need to represent our star, and who we will be up against.

It is important that we recognise our brand, in terms of how we will promote our star, who our target audience are, and how to ensure our audience won’t reject the text. Completing this task allowed us to gain knowledge on how to promote our brand through different distribution methods, and other forms of integrated advertising.

Music Video Draft 4

Here is our 4th and penultimate draft of our music video. We have added in the footage we gathered during our reshoot, as well as some more close-ups of the singer. As well as adding in the missing footage, we made some colour corrections as well as some transitions.

Targets for final draft

  • Alter colouring effects on band shots to make shots more intense.
  • Scale in on shots of singer to make more close up than mid shot.
  • Replace fade to black with dissolve when Man gets in bin.
  • Remove shot of singer walking through frame.

Music Video Draft 3

Here is our 3rd draft for our music video.

We made adjustments to the colouring based on the feedback from Specsavers, however unfortunately we weren’t able to film the rest of our footage to complete our narrative story-line.

We shared our music video with a couple of our peers and here is their review of our 3rd draft.

Targets

  • Film conclusion for narrative .
  • Adjust performance clips so they are in sync with the song.
  • Render clips for the jump cuts.
  • Gather establishing shots to piece together the narrative.

Specsavers Feedback

Members from the Specsavers creative team offered us some advice and guidance to help improve our music video, whilst also teaching us on a few features of Adobe Premier Pro.

Feedback Bullet Points:

  • Use the effect controls feature to change colouring and brightness of the footage.
  • Add adjustment layer to make base effects for either performance or narrative.
  • Gather close up shots of performers and instruments.
  • Aim to get more establishing shots during re-shoot.
  • Write a shot list including experimental shots in case we finish early.
  • Have the model show more emotion during filming, also have him do more actions to show sadness.
  • Utilise transitions by walking towards camera.

Overall the team were very helpful with giving us a better understanding of what we need to achieve for our later drafts, and how to elevate our music video to the next level.

Below are some useful YouTube tutorials that will help us enhance our video.

Teacher Feedback – Screen Castify

  • Cut to first narrative clip whilst guitar string plays.
  • When man walks into camera, use as transition.
  • Long shot from behind, cut to mid shot of stairs, then cut back to long shot to add some variety.
  • Try get some POV shots.
  • Slow motion of tripping over stairs.
  • Cut to close ups, can just film against a granite wall.
  • Delete shot of danger sign.
  • Close up of blazer thrown on floor, cutting to match of action.
  • Close up of bin being dragged across screen.
  • Need to go out and get a few pick up shots: close ups of the man, the bin, the outfit falling apart, POV shots.

What to do to improve

  • Gather close up shots of lip syncing, close ups to piece narrative story together, and film conclusion to narrative.
  • Utilise shots to establish unique transitions.
  • Build more of a connection between the audience and the main star.
  • Re-arrange clips to match the song, e.g. in some shots the drums aren’t synchronised with the song.
  • Use POV shots to emphasise the man’s struggles.

Self Assessment – Previous Students’ Work

Here is a music video made by a previous student. Using an assessment criteria, I will be able to identify what the video did really well and what I can do to improve my own music video.

I chose to analyze this music video since the genre and the type of narrative is similar to my own.

Three good features of the video

  • The lighting in the narrative shots is intentionally disorientating to create discomfort and mystery throughout the music video.
  • The location for the performance works well to create an isolated atmosphere.
  • They use a good variety of shots to set the scene.

How can I Improve my music video?

  • Use effects to make the lighting dimmer.
  • Add some transitions between narrative shots.
  • Use more close up shots of lip syncing.
  • Establish a conclusion for the narrative.

Music Video – Draft 2

Here is our 2nd draft for our music video of ‘The Man Who Sold The World’. We included our shots from our Narrative shoot in Town.

Reflection

Positives

The jump-cuts synchronise well alongside the edit to the beat.

The use of some un-orthodox framing gives a sense of unease, reflecting the discomfort of the man with the bin, which can be seen as crucial to the grunge genre.

Targets for Improvement

Needs a conclusion for the narrative.

Lighting is too bright in some shots.

Drums need to be in sync with the song.

Shoot 2 Reflection

On Tuesday 06/07/21 me and my partner filmed our narrative shot in town. The shot went very well, we got more than enough footage and a variety of different camera angles and locations that will fit our genre.

Here are a few photos taken during our shoot.

We took shots all around town. In crowded areas, narrow and empty streets, and tall sets of stairs. We choose to film in a few places in town which were more underdeveloped since it would be conventional for the rock genre.

What went well

  • We used a big variety of camera angles.
  • The costuming and props went according to plan.
  • The locations worked very well.

What was difficult

  • We had many outtakes due to members of the public interrupting our shoot.
  • Carrying all the equipment was very tiring and time consuming.
  • For some shots we had to wait for cars to pass before we could film.
