So… I am ready to photograph my star.

Brand Value– The brand value for ‘JUICY’ is to portray style and be a reliable brand which expresses the talent and new music of young artists.

Mission statement-  Juicy’s mission is to provide a stylish and a reliable magazine for our audience. In this magazine we will add interest and new updates on the latest topics that will be a desire for the R&B genre readers.

Camera and mise-en-scene-

  • Setting
  • Lighting
  • Props
  • Acting
  • Make-up and hair
  • Costume

We will make sure that the mise en scene relates to the genre and I will make sure it is planned out and it suits the topic.

Camera-

  • Apperture
  • Shutter speed
  • Distance
  • Framing
  • Shot type
  • Angle

When I am taking photos of my models I will make sure that I capture the image at a correct angle to portray the correct impression of my genre. My model must convey style and interest. I want my model to engage in the expectation so I will convey her to look stylish.

So… How can an image communicate meaning?

There are many to ways in which a image can communicate meaning. Some of the main reasons include Mise-en-scene and camera framing. Mise-en-scene helps convey peoples groups, events and places through

  • Costume
  • Lighting
  • Acting and Proxemics
  • Make-up and hair
  • Props
  • Setting

All the above help create the meaning of the image, for example if you are portraying someone to be happy you will use the mise-en-scene to create that certain feeling. In my magazine I will closely analyse my audience to ensure I portray the right interest for them. Camera framing is also really important as it helps show the image in a certain way for example a low angle shot conveys the model to be powerful and important as the camera faces up on her/him, another would be low high angle shot and that conveys the model to be powerless and not important as the camera faces down on the model. When taking these shots you really need to make sure you concentrate on the angle of the image you are taking as if the image isn’t related to your audience it will confuse them. I will need to take into account of my mise-en-scene and my camera framing to ensue I don’t confuse my audience instead I engage them.

feedback on draft one

MY OPINION

This is my first draft for my music magazine, I believe that my front cover is pleasing to look at because of the colour and the bold masthead. I also think the costume and make-up on my model make my magazine work really well as the image matches the personality to my genre, I also think that the contrast in colour from my model is eye catching.

However, I think that the background colours and costume colours make the front page to basic as there isn’t any colours that pop. I also need to cut my models sock out of the corner as it makes the image look unrealistic. Another issue is the text, I need to choose fonts that relate to each other and I need to add more text at different sizes to make it appeal more interesting to look at.

PEER ASSESSMENT

  1. Likes the colour
  2. Image relates to genre
  3. Needs more writing
  4. Make some text bigger as it’s hard to read
  5. Place image more central and possibly on masthead
  6. Change barcode
  7. Add more colour

second shoot contact sheets

I believe that my production meeting helped sufficiently with the planning of this shoot. The shoot as a whole went really well my models we’re well dressed and positioned to fit the genre. The make up and props (glasses) helped make the image look more appealing and exciting. I had to take into account the position of the models as my magazine cover will be split through the middle so I decided to have one and the other of my models to stand different sides to make sure I had room for my models to be a big part of my page, I also needed to make sure I had room for text. I used a constant light to help with the lighting on my models which helped create a solid light for my image. The different locations that I used consist of Hmv , Market square and the Library I found that the more open space I had the better the lighting on my models, although the Hmv hall was a nice background for my images, as a whole i believe it went well.

Branding Ideas + Mission Statement

The name I chose for my music magazine is ‘juicy’ because the name creates interest and it’s catchy. It relates well to my audiences ideology as it implies there is something important to which grabs the readers interest.

This is a word cloud I made it includes words that describes my target audience and how I want to portray there interests in my music magazine to make it different and intriguing to read. In my magazine i will ad adverts that are significant and other information such as new music releases to keep my audience up to date with the latest. My magazine ‘Juicy’ seeks to interest my audience through the music. images and captions that will engage the right attention.

My Audience Profile

Audience Theory

When doing this I had to engage with my audiences ideology. I had to identify their values, attitudes and beliefs. This helped me recognize the demographics of my audience and work out their interests. Stewart Hall stated that this creates the preferred reading match. He also mentions the Oppositional reading this shows the difference in interests as there values, attitudes and beliefs are different. There is also another category of audience mentioned by Stewart Hall called the negotiated reading match they share some interests but not all they overlap. Broadly speaking we all identify our interests through the ideology theory.

Communicating my Brand

This is my pinterest mood board it includes the types of things i’d like to include in my magazine, it consists of the styles and different ideas I want my model to convey. The things that will portray my model in a certain way are clothing, hair and makeup. I also added colours and other inspiring magazine covers to help inspire me. I found making a mood board a great help it gave me a different view on my artist and it gave me a front seat view on things I need to keep the same.

Print Media that Communicates Meaning

In media each session has a direct meaning which indicates a message, weather it’s things such as colour lighting or font style each element creates it’s own perception. Each is an element of ‘Mis En Scene’ which indicates meaning to the audience. MES consists of costume, hair, colour, props, lighting and location.

This is my analysis of ‘MES’ on a tour poster.

Technical camera terms

During one of our lessons we learnt the ways of a camera..we got taught the important procedures such as focal length, shutter speed and ISO. The focal length is the length of the aperture an that is the hole in which light is passed through, shutter speed is how fast the shutter closes when in progress of taking the photo.

some of the basics we learnt that we should use when using the camera are –

  • Turn the camera on
  • Check the battery is working okay
  • Check there is a SD card in the camera
  • Select manual or automatic
  • Menu button to change aperture and shutter speed
  • Check ISO is on automatic settings
  • Take lens cap off when in use and leave on when we aren’t using the camera

We made contact sheets to help identify which images that we took were good and which that didn’t really work. When taking the photos we needed t remember key identifications that help the image create meaning and a story they include the following..

  • Position
  • Angle
  • Distance
  • Models pose
  • Expression

Through our contact sheets I can see that some of our images were very over exposed, some also turned out blurry and out of focus. Some had to much light whereas others had to little. To ensure my next shoot is better i will adjust the shutter speed and ISO number and make sure I help focus the lens.
