The Media Ecology. Map of concepts and mediascape.

Media Ecology is the study of how media and communication processes affect human perception, feeling, emotion and value. Media Ecology influences everyday actions and attitudes in society.

Below is a mind map demonstrating how different aspects of media rely on each other to continue producing content, we linked 8 different aspects:

  • Government
  • Money
  • Audience
  • Technology
  • Distribution
  • Social media
  • Creators
  • Institutions

As a group we were given institutions to focus on, we think it is one of the most important aspects of media. Institutions help to supply and run media content, and with out it there would be nowhere to present and consume media, e.g. the BBC and YouTube.

When I create my magazine I will keep media ecology in mind, as each of the elements will influence how it is made and presented. I’ll definitely think about institutions, to express my understanding and appreciation, as I believe they are over looked when observing how media is produced. By creating a bold and attractive front cover the public will be more enticed to buy the product, and through social media the magazine will be advertised. The magazine will profit from the audience that pays to see its content, allowing more production of the media they want and find interesting.

Below are all the other aspects, showing how each of them link together:
