Finally, it feels as if we are almost done as we have come out with our fourth draft. For this video, we decided to film some clips to fill in the gaps that felt a bit awkward. I think these clips are perfect as they are the right amount of colourful and creepy, which allows the video to run a lot more smoothly. The use of the projector over her while she acts normal and casual represents her mindset being reflected to the target audience. Use of a projector is really trendy at the moment, so I feel as if they will watch this and be impressed that we are keeping up to date with what is currently going on in the wider media world.

Teacher Feeback

• Scale and position more clips so she in not centred the whole video.
• Slow down the ending scene so the audience can take in what is happening.
• Zoom in on dialogue opening scene to give the audience more of a personal feel to what’s happening.
• Perfect the lip syncing and edit to beat.

Moving on, we are going to listen to our teachers comments and make any changes she thinks it suitable. I am really happy we decided to do this extra shoot as it did not take much time at all and helps a lot more than I thought it would.

Here, we have filmed in a new setting to create a more familiar vibe to the music video, as well as link to the movie ‘Jennifer’s Body’ that this song is linked to.

After completing draft 3, e asked some of our peers to critique our work and tell us what went well, but also if they had any targets for us.

Peer Feedback:

• A large range of shots.
• The lighting helps enforce the narrative.
• Edit to the beat is done well and makes the video more intense and atmospheric.
• Good use of Mise en Scene to capture the genre.
• Wide range of location shoots that match the vibe.

Peer Targets:

• Clean up the edit to beat.
• Get more more angles in as a lot are straight on.
• The black screen at the beginning needs to be filled in.
• Maybe make the lip syncing a bit cleaner.
• Make some of the clips brighter as some are quite dark.

In conclusion, we still have some work to do, but a lot of it is just cleaning up rough edges. There is some things I want to improve on and gaps I want to fill, as well as some extra scenes that need filming.

We have decided we still want more shots to break up the music video and have more diverse shots that tell the narrative while she performs. We have decided to use a projector to project different images on to mia, both sweet and creepy. This will display her different emotions and what she is thinking and feeling.

After this shoot we will edit them into our video to make everything run smoothly and to meet the aesthetics of our theme.

We have created another risk assessment just to be sure nothing could endanger any of us while filming.

We have decided to have a third shoot in a bedroom to break up the transition between light and dark and make it run a little smoother.

In this shoot, Mia will be in a pink lit room, in a casual (yet at least a little dressy for media) black outfit. This will be a link to the movie the song was inspired by, in which the main character is sat in her room on the phone. We will film a more narrative section in this shoot by filming Mia on the phone.

This shoot will allow us to create more of a narrative in our video as well as break up the light and dark theme of the video which at the moment contrasts rather harshly.

After completing a few drafts, a couple of people from the media department at Specsavers came into our lesson to review our work and give us constructive criticism. This was highly appreciated as they are professionals who know the inns and outs of adobe software and they were able to give us a few tips and tricks in. order to help us in our journey of creating our music video.

Feedback:

• We are just slightly off with the beat and some of the flashing clips, so we need to carefully edit to the beat to create a smoother video.
• Some clips went on for too long so make them shorter.
• Maybe film more narrative shots to help the audience understand the transition from dark to light side of the star.
• Make things more colourful and brighter, such as the running scene as it is too dark to see what is going on.

Now, we can use the feedback and tutorials to create another draft that is better suited to our audience. I am looking forward to making some of the colours pop more and hopefully getting more clips as right now it still os very empty and lacks a proper story line.

This is our teachers feedback on our second draft.

Teachers Feedback:

• Watch ‘Not I’ music video by Samuel Becket to inspoire us for the first dialogue scene.
• Edit to the beat – will make the video more energetic and is more conventional of music videos.
• In doing so, cut the clips up and spread them out more.
• Scale and position some clips so that they are less centred mid shots and can be more to the side or close up.
• Film some Point Of Views to make the video more personal and give the audience a greater understanding of the narrative.

Moving forward with this information, we can now go and make new chnages to our music video. Our teachers helpful feedback will guide us futher in post prodcution, but now we can also work on our narrative, like in the introduction diologue scene.

Here we have draft 2 of the music video. It is still a very rough cut and has a lot of gaps which we will fill in over time. But, we do now have what we were aiming for: two different personas for the main star. She appears both angelic and murderous in the clips and at the end we edited the video to the beat. This created the atmosphere of panic and anxiety as she runs from the police. The clips are a bit dark so hopefully we find a way to lighten them.

Self Assessment

• We should make sure she knows the lyrics better as we struggled finding good clips.
• Take more shots without flashing lights as they could be useful and we can always edit in post production.
• It may be useful to try and do some research to improve our skills in editing.
• Get more location shoots with different looks to blend the opposite personas better and create more of a narrative.
• Add more clips from the second shoot.

Self Assessment – Previous Students’ Work

Below is a music video from a previous student that I am assessing in order to get a better understanding of what they did so well and how they incorporated all the conventions of a music video. I chose this video as I think it is similar to ours in terms of themes and genre. The video has a smart way of inserting a more violent underlying theme, while still keeping the video dainty and femenine.

• Their mise en scene is consistent and reflects the genre perfectly, I would assume is is indie/ indie pop.
• They use ann effective variety of shot distances, I especially liked that they used a drone as it shows great skill in camera work and conveys their fairy-like genre.
• The effects are well choses, the pink-glowy filter creates an overall feeling of the video and gives the video an overarching theme.

Targets for myself:

• Include more props in our video that tell the story and imrove the narrative. How are the target audience going to be aware of what our narrative is?
• Film a wider variety of distanced shots, The Love Club used a clever amount of distanced shots, from extreme wide shots to close ups and I think our video needs more of that.
• Use more filters in post production to convey the genre and vibe of our music video. I really liked the slighly blurry filters as they gave the video a more angelic feeling, but we could also use darker filters to enforce the evil side of our star image.

Moving on, I am looking forward to using the inspiration drawn from this process on my own music video and creating a better narrative for our star image and genre.

For our second shoot at Pleinmont, we filmed a more dark themed shoot and I personally think it went really well. It was great to get so much more footage to put into our video.

What went well:

• We got a diverse range of shots and different locations which aided our music video theme as we were trying to get a more creepy dark side of the artist.
• We got a lot more of the lyrics to the song filmed so that we can have a clean transition from light to dark
• The lighting was perfect and we got some unique looking shots just from natural sun light as well as a red and blue light which was similar to a police light.
• The main star was able to look a lot more menacing and evil in this shoot with the help of her black leather outfit as well as the fake blood and shovel which went with our murderous theme.

What could have gone better:

• We could have made sure she knew the lyrics a little better so that it was less stressful for us in post production
• We could have experimented with angles more like close ups and long shots
• Perhaps it would have been better for us to have some actual studio lighting to make it easier for us when it got a bit darker.

Moving on, we will edit the video more to create a second draft as well as have a few more shoots to get some more looks and perhaps build more on the narrative side as we only have performance at the moment.
