Narrative Development

This is our narrative structure plan and description. It highlights the key thematic points of our music video and the themes we are trying to convey. We were able to properly plan out the characters, as well as highlight the conflicts and resolutions. This allowed us to break down the structure of our video which will make it easier to film.

Now that we have our narrative structure plan, it is more clear to us how to convey themes of conflict and disruption. The merge of the different types of narratives will make the music video all the more episodic and it will assist us in being able to create the scenes.

Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut –

This is our first draft of a few shots we got from the shoot. It isn’t the full song, but it has already given us inspiration on what else to film and where to put it.

I believe this went really well for a first shoot. Our actress was lively and photogenic and complied with everything we asked of her. Her make up, hair and outfit as well as the flowery field matched our theme for the light side perfectly and we got very lucky with the weather. We got a good number of shots and she managed to lip sync very well after a few takes. However, next time we may need to get more shots in different outfits, and get her to turn the acting down just a bit to fit the more mellow and vicious scenes. Now we know we need way more time to get the costume, make up and travelling done.

Targets for next time:

  • different looks
  • maybe get a few more performance shots
  • different angles and shots
  • include the narrative story
  • make sure she plays the part we want her to

Shoot 1 reflection

After our first shoot, we came up with a rough cut of shoots in this field. We now know that time management is important and that on top of make up and costume, getting to the places and filming takes a lot of time. Next time, we know we need go earlier in order to prepare.

Here are some shots from the video:

What went well:

  • We got some good shots
  • The make up and costume was well done and well prepared
  • the location matched perfectly

What to improve on:

  • We didn’t have enough time
  • We kept zooming in and moving the camera randomly
  • We could have got more shots

Star Image – the performer

The star image is very important when creating a piece of media, so we had to have a clear understanding of Halsey’s star image before continuing with our music video. We used sites such as pinterest to find photos that best represnt her and took screenshots of articles about the song and Halsey herself.

From the articles, I can see that Halsey is a powerful independant woman who’s music has lots of meaning personally. She is not camera shy and appears as confident and well put together. Her photos present her extraordinary with colourful lights and makeup which create the genre of a sort of indie-pop artist.

Richard Dyer’s theory of The Paradox of the Star included that stars are both ordinary and extraordinary. Her lyrics are heartfelt and meaningful which shows she is just like anybody else, but her powerful persona on-stage and in photos and videos exhibits her as an extraordinary celebrity.

How do you want them to be represented (angry, rebellious, mellow, empathetic, angry)?

I want our star to be represented as aesthetically pleasing and kind, as well as confident and strong. Halsey has a certain persona about her that is both sweet and pure, but also scandalous and edgy, which is something we want to achieve in our video.

How will you achieve this (visual design, body language, gestures, facial expressions, colours, costumes, props, make up?)

We will do this by our actress having two personas: A calm, romantic girl, who wears white and has pretty make up, and then a murderous, all in black and leather girl who desperately seeks revenge. Our mes will be very importanrt when doing this but so will our lighting and scenery. For example, flowery fields in the sunlight for good and dark, moon-lit fields at night for the bad.

Moving forward, i am looking forward to seeing how we accomplish this and creating the two personas for our star image, that will inspire our target audience into both loving the aesthetic and embracing their confidence.

Group agreement

Before going any further, me and my group had to come up with an agreement. This was to just get a basic understanding of our skills and weaknesses to see what each of us could bring to the table and help each other with.

Signing this together as a group shows that we have all made a commitment to each other, and will not let each other down.

Test shoot – lip sync

To get used to creating a music video with our song, we made a very short lip sync video to the chorus of ‘killing boys’ using a variety of shots. This allowed us to work on our camera skills, getting a variety of shots and transitions, as well as our directing skills, in which we guided Sofia’s lip syncing and portrayal of a star image. It also helped us get understand our song and the deeper meaning of the lyrics and what our star image should be like, giving us more ideas on how to create the perfect music video that adds to the paradox of the star.

What went well:

  • We had a good edit to the beat
  • We had multiple shots
  • The song is well lip synced
  • We all as a group developed on our editing skills

What could be better in the real thing:

  • We have better mese en scene
  • We have a better narrative
  • More locations
  • A larger variety of shots and angles

Moving forward, we will now be able to start thinking about the actual music video and the star image we are wishing to present to our target audience. Now we know how to work a camera and edit, we will be able to get a larger range of shots.
