Production Meeting Agenda For 2nd Photo Shoot And Risk Assessment

This is my production meeting agenda for my next shoot!

For this shoot I am going to go into town and take photos with Jack and Elliot. These photos are for my double page spread so hopefully by getting some photos in town I can get a nice variety of images for my magazine. My double page spread is going to be an interview so I am hoping to get some pictures which will really tell a story or convey a strong message.

This was useful as I now know what I need for my shoot and I have planned out who is responsible so there should be no faults in communication or confusion.

Language Analysis

This is my language analysis of an interview.

Here is the article which my analysis is based of.

The Article

Interview

  • ‘The beat(June 20th, 2015) Adam Lambert : Don’t look back, Written by Shirly Halperin’

  • Who-Adam Lambert
  • What-His personal life, identity, loneliness and struggles and the album. Themes of identity politics.
  • When- June 20th 2015 release of magazine. June 16th 2015 album launch.
  • Where-Hollywood
  • Why-To show his struggles and to show the audience his ordinary life. And to promote his new album.
  • How-Through interviews with the artist

Structure

This article is an interview and I can tell because the magazine quoted the artist’s statements and expanded them. There aren’t specific questions asked but more so the artist has been asked a general question about his album and inspiration and everything else is related to that. “The album is really honest,” he says. “It’s about where I’m at in my life right now.” Where’s that exactly? Lambert is open about being “boy crazy” but ultimately feeling lonely. The magazine is fairly formal but uses modern language in order to appeal with its audience. By being laid out this way it feels more like the interviewer recalling the experience as opposed to a Q and A style back and forth.

The introduction is a summary of the artist and it briefly shows the audience what he has done and what he is like currently. The conclusion is a quote from Adam which wraps up the article nicely and is satisfying and reasonable to conclude.

Presence of Journalist

The journalist is not very present in the interview and it is written so that it feels like the artist is the one talking and the journalist is not talking or asking anything. This is quite impactful as it feels like the artist’s recollection and not the journalists point of view. The interview is written with first person quotes from the artist and a third person narrative over him. This makes the whole article seem like a quote is said and then it is expanded on. The narrative feels like an overview and not biased or personality based.

Language and Aim

The narrator/journalist uses up to date language and terms to relate to the audience such as ‘Boy crazy’ and “banger” he also says “a sexually ambiguous rocker with a flair for operatic shrieks and studded leather outfits among earnest pop singers.”  this helps to relate to the audience’s personal identity. The article is quite quite formal despite this and conveys a professional tone which is factual as well as modern. The recollection fits the genre quite well by using language which is relatable and talking about fashion in the intro is something which would appeal to the audiences’ likes and interests “for a guy who calls his inability to be content his “dark side.”. The interviewer uses similes such as “Glam rock Revivalist” but the interviewer doesn’t use very many similes or metaphors in their article. All the quotes are directly from the artist and represent his point of view and thoughts. These quotes help the audience get the artists point of view which leads them to an unbiased conclusion.

This article aims to inform the audience about Adams life and struggles and it aims to give an unbiased recollection of the events of Adams recent life.

Representation of the performer

Overall the journalist represents the artist in a fair and unbiased way, The journalist lets Adam answer and only narrates to add context and expand on his answers. The journalist represents the star in a pretty good way and makes sure to show his hardships and his successes.

Draft of Contents Page

For this task I had to draft up a contents page. I aimed to use fairly conventional layouts for my genre but stuck to my theme of breaking the punk conventions by adding a pink background. I think it looks quite good and the font and text fits well on the page.

This is my draft of my contents page!

Peer Assesment

My Targets:

  • Replace placeholder text with language which reflects my genre.
  • Cut out model more precisely and with more care.
  • Make sure the image at the bottom isn’t stretched.
  • Make the model a bit bigger.
  • Maybe work on the layout of the text around the bottom.

I think these targets will help my contents page look more organised and professional. Overall these targets can make my contents page more full and appealing and they make the whole thing have a more pronounced and cleaner aesthetic.

I think getting peer feedback is very good as it has allowed me to look at my poster from a more unbiased stand point which leaves room for improvement which I may have not considered. By taking criticism from my peers I can benefit in the long run and get another opinion on my work which is very valuable. This is a very useful thing to do.

What Is A Contents Page?

For this post I had to research contents pages and the way they are designed. I found many contents pages from other titles in my genre and looked at the conventions and other features in order to find inspiration for my own. Below is a slide of the contents pages that I found.

Contents pages are very good as they give an insight into the contents of the magazine and they excite the audience by teasing what’s inside and a lot of contents pages show the audience the next edition which makes them want to buy the next magazine. Contents pages generally include index numbers which say what’s on each page and they include teasers and things to entice the audience.

I think that these are some cool designs which I can use in my own work. I noticed that the magazines use AIDA in order to draw the audiences attention towards the coverlids and Index numbers.

Here are my drafts of the layout for my contents page.

I think that these are safe and conventional but they are effective and catchy. I think the layout is conventional in the lay out and the picture placement. I think the inclusion of pugs is conventional of the punk genre and the inset images are also common. I think these are effective as the picture is quite big and eye catching and the the index numbers are clear. The pugs and inset images are also there to grab the audiences attention.

I think I will pick the big sketch with the most detail as I think it represents the genre the best. I think the crowded energy helps convey the genre best and it works well.

Here are some of my ideas for eye catching titles for my contents page.

  • New punk music on the horizon!
  • 4 Amazing pop punk artists new on the scene!
  • Punk breakthrough incoming!
  • How to breakthrough in the pop punk scene? (exclusive interviews)
  • The secrets behind your favourite artists are finally revealed !

Contents pages are generally

  • Eye catching
  • Informative
  • Attractive
  • Gossip/ juicy
  • enticing
  • Factual

These are some pf the conventional features which make up contents pages. By being enticing and eye catching the page grabs the audiences attention and sparks curiosity which makes them want to read the magazine. By adding a question in the title it implies that there is an answer inside which makes the reader curious. By being informative and factual the audience knows that the information is true and relevant. By adding gossip and other things it can also spark a readers interest.

Overall I think that this task was useful as by planning and researching I have discovered conventions and features which I would not have originally thought to use. This task has helped me improve my planning skills and has helped me to visualise my own contents page.

Draft Of Front Page And Self Assessment

This is my first draft of my front cover! ^

I think its quite effective and appealing to my target audience. I have made a slide which analyses in detail the features and details.

My 3 targets for changes I will make are

  • A bigger front cover star
  • More text on the page so there is more to see
  • Adjusting the layout so it is a bit more crowded similar to more conventional punk front covers and so it looks a little more full.
  • (extra) Cut out my model better

Overall I think that reflecting on my work was a very handy way to see where I can improve and change my work. I have identified some areas where I can improve and I think I have found some areas to improve my work. This was very useful to gauge where I am at with my real front cover and I have a good idea of the ideas I want to implement into it to make it very good.

First Shoot Contact Sheet

For my first shoot I tried to stick to punk conventions whilst also experimenting. I had my model in multiple poses and makeup options and I aimed to capture an energetic and rebellious feel. I used Mise en scene to portray to the audience what kind of feeling I am trying to convey and I used makeup subtly but I think I used it enough so that it sticks to punk conventions. I did two shoots overall and  because of some confusion  I had to change model but this is my final model.

Here is all my photos that I got!

These are some of my final choices for my front cover.

I think these do the best job of conveying the punk genre. My models face is snarling in some which works well and there is a sense of chaotic energy to a lot of them. The only current issue is that some photos have a bright reflection on the guitar so they may not be suitable for the front cover. I think this shoot went quite well and I feel much more confident and competent on a camera since doing this.

So What Am I Up Against-The Competition?

This is my Piktochart of my competition. In this task I created a Piktochart and filled it out with what I have found about my competition in order to highlight what I can do to beat my competition.

If you are struggling to see my Piktochart here is a link.

By doing this I have insight on what my competition do in order to appeal to and inspire fans. Hopefully by doing this I can have a deeper understanding of my audiences likes and dislikes and what I can do to appeal to them and win over my competition. By making sure I know what my competition do I can aim to do the same but better and with more. I am going to use a lot of audience interaction and involvement and hopefully this will make them feel more involved and a part of the community.

Production Meeting Agenda For 1st Photo Shoot

This is my production meeting agenda.

For this I have played out what I need for the shoot and who is responsible.

I have decided to go down a more modern route and will bring in fake tattoos, a guitar, a cap, a chain and some rings, eyeliner and a short sleeve black shirt in order to show off the tattoos.

I think by planning out my entire shoot I can be certain of what I want and I can also make sure I am ready and organised. By doing this it should mean that nothing gets confused between me and my model and there is no miscommunicated.

Masthead Designs

Mastheads are a very important feature as it is one of the first things that our audience will see. It is crucial to create a design that conveys the genre its trying to represent.

For this task I had to create my own Masthead designs and I chose a multitude of designs ranging from conventional and stereotypical punk designs all the way to more modern and trendy looking titles.

This is how they turned out!

Here are some fonts which I chose on Dafont.

I was aiming to go for the modern and digital pop punk style and I think that these represent a glitch effect which is like a glitch in the system or an outlier which represents the punk genre and its fans which is why I think it will be a good choice.

I think, for my final title , I will use either this one for a Da font font.

Or I will use This one for a normal font.

I aim to experiment more with the Da font and normal fonts and I will use in design to alter and change my fonts by adding effects and outlines.

Overall this was very useful for my magazine as without an appropriate and appealing masthead I cannot hope to appeal to my target audience and my mission statement and message may be lost in translation when the audience gets the wrong idea from a masthead.
