Pitch + Feedback

This is our pitch to our teacher on our ideas and ambitions for our music video. We presented this to our teacher and received feedback on our ideas and suggestions to further improve our work. Our pitch consisted of how we envisioned MES, Shot ideas and locations. We also added features of our impressions of the song through synesthesia.

Here is our Slideshow!

This is a video of our pitch to our teacher, In this we showed our teacher our ideas for performance, narrative, setting and MES. We showed her our thoughts for the song and themes and ideas for the video. We explained our visions for the video and how we are going to make our star seem extraordinary and ordinary and how we will split focus 50/50 from performance to narrative. We analyzed the features of conventional indie rock and based a lot of our ideas of that so that we can stay conventional and remain relevant to our genre.

Test Shoots

For this task we had to film 15 seconds of our music video in practice for lip syncing, transitions and editing. We went out and filmed a bunch of clips and then went back and edited them in premiere pro. This task was useful as it gave me a grasp for forming coherent transitions with lip syncing lining up and it also gave me a further insight on the variety of potential angles I can use to convey the tone of the song. I think this task really helped me with my filming and editing skills and has prepared me for my actual shoot.

Here is our final result!

Overall I think this short segment is quite good. It has a good use of fast pace editing at the start and a consistent tone which works nicely.

What went well?

  • Coherent Lip syncing so it lines up with the song nicely
  • Good acting, the star is putting a good amount of effort so the video looks convincing and energetic
  • Fast pace editing at the start lines up with the beat of the music which helps the video flow
  • Use of whip pan transition makes it more interesting and fast paced

What could have gone better?

  • We could have done a longer segment so that we could fit in a wider variety of shots as we had more shots but not enough time to utilize them properly.
  • Better use of mise en scene in terms of location and costumer in order to convey the star as both ordinary and extraordinary.
  • Better lip syncing 0verall. Our initial effort was good but it can still be improved for sure.
  • Less jumpy editing and a wider variety of angles so that we can diversify our shots and portray our star in a multitude of ways.

Overall I think that this task was very useful as it has given me a huge learning experience for filming and editing a music video. It has made me more aware of the potential shots and editing features which I can include to help portray my star and genre in a conventional yet unique way. I think this post will really help me with my music video as it has given me a micro dose of each task I will need to do in my music video so it has helped me visualize and boost my confidence in the creation of my music video.

Visual Shot List For Shoot 1 (Performance)

This is our shot list Padlet!

This Padlet is to help me understand how I’m going to film my performance for my genre and how I will convey my star as extraordinary and ordinary, how I will use different shots which will be conventional of my genre and how I can use a repertoire of elements to accurately portray my genre and star. By analysing different uses of cinematography and editing within other videos from the genre I can work out what will work best for my video and has helped me visualise how my own video will look.

Made with Padlet

This post was very useful as it has made me more aware of the conventions used in indie rock music videos.  Analysing the different features and how they convey the performers in an extraordinary and ordinary light has helped me to think of ideas which I can use for my own video.

Perfect Production Group

This is our Group agreement document.

In this task we had to analyse the strengths and weaknesses off our group and figure out how we are going to tackle potential troubles and how we intend to share responsibility.

This task was very useful as now I have a visual sheet describing our teams strengths and weaknesses and our goals to be successful. By doing this I can have a better idea of our plan and it is clear to each member how we intend to share work load and responsibility. By knowing exactly what I am responsible for I can easily see what I need to do and avoid a clash via poor communication or unclear roles. This task relates well to transferable skills of organisation and planning and will be very useful for the creation of my music video.

Permission From Artist

In this photo you can see that I have messaged Catfish and The Bottlemen asking for permission to use their song in my music video.

This is important as due to copyright and respecting the rights of the artist. Had I not messaged them I risk getting sued or getting our video taken down so this is important to do.

This task was important as it shows how necessary it is to ask permission and how important it is to ask permission.

Final Song Choice

The song we chose for our final song is Rango by catfish and the bottlemen.

We chose this song because we think it is;

  • Energetic
  • Summery
  • Deep
  • Emotional
  • Narrative capable
  • Open for interpretation
  • Ambient and vibey

I think this song is good because it has a spacey and interesting feel, I feel like the song is open for interpretation and has many layers of meaning so it will be good for a music video. The song has a darker feel, especially in the bridge section which I interpret as the music decaying the mind as the music becomes more frantic and chaotic. I think this can really help the narrative of the video to have a deep impact and theme. I think this song has enough themes that it can be used to convey many different narratives so it is perfect for a music video and I can already visualise many ideas for it.

Initial Song Ideas For A Video – Mini Pitch

For this task I had to create a mini pitch of a song I would like to do for my music video. I thought the song “Voldemort” by With Confidence would be good as it has a summery vibe and it has a deep lyrical meaning.

Here is my mini pitch!

For this task I implemented the use of syneasthesia which is essentially visualising music through listening alone. From music we can visualise in our heads the setting, artist and mood of video is and I created my word cloud by listening blind to the music and these are the ideas that came to my head.

I think this task was really useful as by creating a pitch I managed to uncover the features of the song and helped visualize my own ideas for the song. This has helped me to develop my creative skills and has allowed me to portray my ideas in a presentable way to my group members.

Favourite Music Video From Former Student

This is my favourite music video from previous students.

Technical conventions – The editing is done well and has a very summery vibe. The shots are varied yet convey the vibe well. Low angles from the drums give detail and the editing during the skating montage being quick conveys the fast pace and summery feel.

Video style – The fish eye camera gives the video a vintage and skater look and helps to add a layer of depth to the video and it portrays the stars as skaters and indie as the fish eye is a common feature of those aesthetics. The cutting to all the band members faces works well to portray the happy feel.

Narrative and performance – The overall video narrative seems to be skating and having fun during summer. The costumes help to convey this theme and the simple clothes relate well to the indie genre. The skateboard props help to show use what the performers enjoy and it helps to further install the summer feel.

Star representation – The stars are showed as talented but also as quirky and fun as we see throughout the video them skating and having fun. The bedroom feel of where the band is playing shows them as indie and relatable as it isn’t a huge stage but somewhere more familiar.

I think this task was useful as it will help me with my own music video as by identifying what I like and dislike about other students work I can see what I want to do in my own and what to avoid. I think this has given me an idea for a more summery music video with more of a montage idea as opposed to narrative and this could be a potential idea I will implement into my own work.

Detailed Music Video Analysis

Detailed music video analysis

For this task I had to choose a song and do an in depth analysis of it and how its features of Mise En-Scene, Camera, Editing, Narrative and structure help to convey the themes its trying to portray.

Here is my analysis of the song “The Pretender” by Foo Fighters.

I think this task was very useful as it has helped me to identify the features which make up music videos and how they are used in order to effectively convey a theme and narrative. This task has helped me think of ways in which I can convey themes within my own music video and it has helped me understand how to utilize different shots and editing styles to convey a mood.

Prelim Task Mood Montage

Prelim Task Mood Montage

For this task we had to convey a theme in a 40 second montage. Our theme was strength and confidence so in order to convey this narrative we brainstormed ideas. We decided on a workout montage and someone overcoming a bully. This gives the montage a small narrative but its not entirely relevant or a story.

Here is our planning sheet.

After this we got to filming.

Here is our final product.
https://youtu.be/A8HTfGIRVUk

Strengths of my montage;

  • Good shot compositions such as different angles and shot distances
  • Good variation of shots – The shots are varied and don’t remain all the same which gives variation to the montage
  • Good montage section – The actual montage conveys the idea well and conveys the theme

Weaknesses of my montage;

  • Too much narrative – There is too much narrative quality and isn’t all a montage
  • Some strange shots – the over the shoulder shorts are strange and the framing is odd
  • Not as smooth editing and transitions in some sections – There is a few areas where the transitions aren’t smooth and natural.

This task was very useful as it helped me understand how to compose shots and transitions. It helped my creative skills in conveying a narrative and it helped me to further improve my knowledge of premier pro and filming skills.

I think this task will prove to be useful when creating my music video as it has given me a further insight of what features to use and not to use in my own work. This task has also helped me understand filming, composing shots and editing which are a crucial part of my music video.
