Music Video Draft 3

This is our draft 3 of our music video.

Here is the feedback I received from my peers.

Pros –

. I really enjoyed the range of shot distances used
. I like the tension that was built up through the video
. The drums, guitar and lip syncing went with the music
Cons –
. I’m not sure about the black and white filter in the performance section. Possibly, instead you could use a filter with a dark concentration on it.
. The shot of the baby becoming blurred is slightly shaky and I think it may need to be replaced.
. I think you need more of a variety of shots whilst lip syncing.
Overall, it is really great and looks very professional.

I am glad to see that some of the things we edited have been noted in our peers reflection. Some of the things we changed from draft 2 to 3 are.
  • Got rid of some of the grainy shots as they are only used once in the video and it is not consistent.
  • Made some continuity edits, mainly singing.
  • Improved syncing in general.
  • We pushed back some scenes to establish the boy and girl better.

The feedback we have received has further improved our outlook and has given us more suggestions and ideas for our final draft. Our feedback indicates that we have a solid video which could be improved with a few more tweaks which is good because it means our work so far has been improving with every draft.

Music Video Final Draft

Here is our final draft for our music video!

Overall I am very pleased with how our music video came out, we took onboard the criticism given to us by our peers, professionals and teachers and integrated them into the final version of our product. Our video has gone through a lot of changes but I think we have ended up producing a professional and enjoyable video.

Teacher Feedback – Screencastify

Here is our teacher feedback on our second draft of our music video!

Summary

After watching our feedback video we have really been able to think about what we need to improve on and what is good. Following what our teacher said it is clear that we have some very solid performance shots which are synced well and have a well thought out cut time which lands on beat with the music. Our editing pace is chosen well and also reflects the feel of the song. Overall we can confirm that our performance is the best part so far but we need to diversify the showcasing of instruments and not use the same shots. Some suggestions we have taken on board for draft three is the further establishment of the girl in order to make it clearer her importance and link to the other half of the narrative. We where also told that we should re-use the fast pace of edit idea at the end of the video as to bring back original themes and to wrap the video up nicely.

Improvements to take away

  • Make sure the use of effects is relevant (done correctly in the video just not the best places for them)
  • Sharpen effect (Grain) isn’t used anywhere else in the video so no need for it
  • Don’t whip pan to castle if it has no relevance
  • Different shots of the performance, good amount just a wider range if angles
  • Make the stabbing scenes more obvious and fast pace in order to express severity and urgency
  • Far more establishment of the girl and the props surrounding her, mainly at the start, mainly things such as knife, face and doll

Overall I think this feedback has been useful as it will make our video better and has given us more ideas on how we can improve and how our video can be more understandable and easily watched.

Specsavers Feedback

Specsavers Feedback

After the completion of our second draft we got some feedback from the creative department at Specsavers. They watched through our video and gave us some very useful ideas and tips. They had some really interesting things to say and their constructive criticism was very handy at bettering our own work. Another thing they helped us with was utilising premiere to its fullest potential in which they taught us shortcuts and little tips which can make our work flow more efficient. Some of the most useful things taught to us by the supersavers people where how to make new sequences to try new things, useful shortcuts to make working easier and some general tips to make what we have more understandable and more fluent.

What they liked about our video;

  • Our performance is well shot and looks good
  • Our narrative is well planned and cohesive
  • our editing so far is interesting and maintains the pace of the video well

Their advice to improve;

  • More connections between the doll and jack to create a more cohesive link
  • Some more close ups of the doll
  • A wider variety of shots throughout
  • Push the scenes of the doll being stabbed further back to establish the narrative a bit more and to fit the mood of the song
  • Show a few more scenes of the girl to make an even balance

in conclusion it was very useful having the creative team come to help us out and give us advice. it really opened our eyes on what we can improve and how we can utilize the software to its fullest potential. it was nice to get a new perspective and was very useful to have a discussion with somebody who is an expert in the field.

Music Video Draft 2

Here is our second draft of our Music video!

Overall I am very pleased with how our video is going, we have a very well established idea and are doing very well to create our vision. We have added multiple effects such as color correction and we have filled out the video more. We have improved the editing so its on the beat and we have a multitude of edits varying from fast pace to slow paced. We have added adjustment layers and we have added transitions, zooms, sharpens and camera blurs.

Here is a previous students video

By watching some past videos it has allowed me to see what we can improve on more and what we can take away from their experience and how their video came out.

This video demonstrates

  • Great lighting which reflects the mood of the song
  • A variety of angles
  • Cool effects on the screen such as text and glitch effects
  • Crossover of parts of the girl and boy

In order to improve our own work I think we need;

  • To fill out the middle section of the video and the end
  • sync up a few more shots, mainly the guitar
  • establish a greater link between the voodoo doll and our actor
  • Show the girl more
  • Maybe some more angles and variation
  • Maintain pace throughout the video.
  • Color correct entire video

Overall I am confident with how our video is coming along and I believe with more time we can really create something good. This post was very useful as watching my video through a critical eye has allowed me to see where we can improve and be the best we can be. We also asked many of our peers for feedback and this was udeful as it has given us the angle of an unbiased, average media prosumer.

Video Narrative/Story Sheets

Here are some of our story Sheets for our music video.

Shot of the main star walking into the bunker.
An establishing shot of the bunker, this will be used to gauge where we are and where our character is going and will end up.
Shot of the voodoo doll and shot reverse shot or fade into protagonists face.
Shots of protagonist walking towards bunker, maybe following or static

These are our Narrative shot sheets.

Camera shot list:

  • Behind the back walking longshot, potential depth of field antics
  • establishing shot on bunker
  • Whip pan onto voodoo doll
  • extreme closeup of needle going into voodoo doll
  • Jumpshot so doll appears and disappears
  • Close ups to show facial expressions and acting
  • Mid shot to show the doll well
  • Shots showing the effect of the doll on the actor
  • Pan to establish the setting
  • Ped to create suspense

Overall this post details some of the shots that we will use for our narrative shoot. These shots are an important part of our video as they really help to convey the narrative and themes of the video. The voodoo doll shot in particular is crucial as it needs to stand out as it holds a large significance for the theme of our video. This task was very useful as now we are much more prepared to get these shots and we have discussed and analyzed which shots will allow us to have the most narrative impact on a scene and by doing this we are more organized and  prepared for what we hope to achieve.

Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

This is our first draft of our music video for Rango by Catfish And The Bottlemen. Overall it went together fairly easily as we had plenty of useable footage to work with and a fairly vast choice of shots. I think what we created was decent although I think there are certainly areas which require improvement.

Positives:

  • Fast pace of edit at the start
  • Cuts follow the beat and pulse of the song
  • Good lighting in most of it so it isn’t jarring
  • Edits make sense and work nicely together

Negatives:

  • Not enough variety of distances ie; Close up
  • Some shots are held for too long
  • Could be colour corrected in areas, potentially black and white
  • Potentially more energetic performance from actors

Targets to improve:

I believe in order to improve what we have we may need to get even more shots and add in a wider variety of distances, we need to add more transitions swell as there where very few in our current video. I think we need more energy from the actors aswell. I think overall this first draft is fine but it can definitely be improved and I think us lacking some shots really impaired our ability to create it to its fullest.

  • Far more transitions
  • Colour correction
  • Higher energy performance
  • Don’t hold shots for too long
  • More angles and distances

Shoot 2 Reflection Narrative

Our second shoot

For our second shoot we went to pleinmont and the fairy ring in order to get some shots for our narrative. We ran into issues when we had to change the exposure of our camera and the conditions meant that all of our shots where shaky due to the intense wind. At first we ran into issues with camera and exposure leaving a vast majority of our shots far too dark, the second issue was that due to the wind being so extreme even the tripod shook leadings to shaky footage which didn’t look very professional.

Positives

  • We attained some usable shots to use in our video
  • We have a variety of angles and transitions
  • We had some good shots

Negatives

  • Under exposed shots
  • Windy conditions made the camera shaky
  • shaky handheld camera due to lack of shoulder mount
  • Too many long shots and more close ups needed

Overall our first shoot was not overly successful, we needed to be more organised and planned out but we also need to time it better due to weather conditions. We need to go out and reshoot anyway with a girl so this first shoot was more of a test run but now we at least know what we need to improve on for our next shoot. In our planning documents we had arranged the shots we had wanted to get but we did not consider the weather as a variable so next time we must do that. Had we foreseen the forecast we could have potentially chosen to shoot on another day which would have provided us with far better footage.

From this experience however it has cemented the importance of planning and being prepared and has made me evaluate harder for what will have the best outcome for our shoots.

Narrative Development

This is our narrative outline sheet.

For this task we had to fill out a form describing our narrative. This has helped us a lot as it has established what we need to do and has helped me visualise our video more. This planning was important as it is crucial to know what we are doing and to ensure we all share the same vision. This was a very important task as it is our plan for what will be 50% of our music video. It is important that we make the video like a short film in the sense of a progressing narrative and meaning, however we also need to make sure there is rewatch ability in the video and the meaning is relevant to the lyrical content of the song. This sheet has really helped make sure that our narrative is cohesive and planned out.

For our narrative its important that we establish that our narrative is rewatchable with a simple message which can be interpreted in many ways. It needs to be distinct from a short film in that it needs to be understandable from only a visual point and in a very short amount of time and it needs to be interesting and relevant to the lyrical content of the song.

Overall this was super useful and has really helped me understand what is going to happen. Without this sheet we would be unsure what shots we would be trying to get and what message we would be trying to convey, this is very useful from an organising and planning perspective swell as now our whole group knows what we are doing and we are all on the same page.

Production Meeting For Shoot 2

This is our production meeting agenda for shoot 2.

This planning document has all the details for our recent shoot. This sheet is useful as it means that we have a clearly established idea of our locations, Mise en scene and camera.

This document is very important as it avoids faults in our communication and clearly indicates who is responsible for what. The act of making a planning document is very good as it makes things much more organized and predictable.
