Contact Sheet – Draft Ideas

Our most recent shoot was for our digipak, this shoot was admittedly far more meticulously planned than any of our other shoots. In this shoot we knew exactly what we wanted to gain from it and we managed to obtain all the shots we wanted as well as a variety of angles, distances and use of depth of field. This means that we have a very broad range of shots to choose from when designing our digipak and we have a good variety of elements to utilize to remain relevant to our genre.

Here are my favorite shots from the shoot!

This is our back cover, it looks good and the focus of the image is fairly clear, we think in post we may blur the background to give a depth of field effect to highlight the focus even more on the center of the image.
this shot was a different perspective of one of our shots but I feel that the depth of field looks very nice and visually appealing and the lay out stills conveys what we wanted it to just a bit better.
This shot was originally not our intention but after taking the shot we originally wanted we decided that this could be more innovative and creative and it tells more of a story. This shot is more edgy and conveys our genre better than the original plan.
This is our front cover, it tells a story but isn’t too flashy or over the top, the minimalist design is conventional of other indie front covers and portrays our genre nicely.

In conclusion my group and I fully believe this to be one of our most successful shoots which has made our digipak process far easier to go through than any other shoots. This shoot was planned well, organized properly and overall communicated very well between our group. I think it is evident now that our previous mindset of planning a bit but winging some of it was not the way to go and this shoot has really taught me the most streamlined and effective way to go about this work. Our next step is to edit our photos, we intend to use some depth of field ideas so we can make our shots more diverse, we will create a band logo to go on the cover and we will most likely color correct and add more detail or less to the images overall.

PMA For Digipak

We have moved on from the phase of designing our Digipak and we now are planning the shoot and we made this Production meeting agenda in order to aid us in knowing exactly what we need to bring and who is responsible, normally we would have done a risk assessment but this time we where in school with nothing at all risky so we decided not to.

In conclusion I find Production meeting agendas to be vital as they truly aid us in knowing what to do and make the process of preparing for a shoot as easy and quick as possible in an easy to understand format.

Music Video Draft 3

This is our draft 3 of our music video.

Here is the feedback I received from my peers.

Pros –

. I really enjoyed the range of shot distances used
. I like the tension that was built up through the video
. The drums, guitar and lip syncing went with the music
Cons –
. I’m not sure about the black and white filter in the performance section. Possibly, instead you could use a filter with a dark concentration on it.
. The shot of the baby becoming blurred is slightly shaky and I think it may need to be replaced.
. I think you need more of a variety of shots whilst lip syncing.
Overall, it is really great and looks very professional.

I am glad to see that some of the things we edited have been noted in our peers reflection. Some of the things we changed from draft 2 to 3 are.
  • Got rid of some of the grainy shots as they are only used once in the video and it is not consistent.
  • Made some continuity edits, mainly singing.
  • Improved syncing in general.
  • We pushed back some scenes to establish the boy and girl better.

The feedback we have received has further improved our outlook and has given us more suggestions and ideas for our final draft. Our feedback indicates that we have a solid video which could be improved with a few more tweaks which is good because it means our work so far has been improving with every draft.

DP Mockup

For this task we had to draft a Digipak and decide what we wanted it to look like and how we can make it conventional and unique at the same time. We had many different ideas so it was difficult for us to decide on what we wanted but because we had so many ideas that meant there where many good options to choose and develop.

Here is the design we chose for our Digipak. It has a theme of letters and has a link to the album name ‘Letters from nowhere’.

Overall I am very pleased with how this came out, I like our theme of letters and how the song names are in the letters and the letters content actually reflects the songs. This creates a real narrative for our album overall and creates a good star image for our band. The conventional ideas within our genre is either minimalist or retro look, our design breaks those conventions a little bit but I think it is still faithful and it’s deeper meanings are a staple of the indie rock genre.

Digipak Conventions Analysis

For This task I had to get an album front and back cover from a band in the indie rock genre and analyze the conventions, details, themes and other things done to convey a message and be appealing to the target audience.

Here is my conventional analysis!

Overall I found this task very useful as it has helped me to think how I will structure my own Digipak and what things I will use to create the desirable brand image I am looking for. This task has shown me how people who are established in the genre have created their brand image and it has given me insight into how everything needs to be relevant and correlate and how I need to make things stand out.

The Look Book – The Package

For this task we researched many different indie rock bands in order to identify their inspirations and themes within the genre. We found a lot of common features which we intend to utilise in our own Digipak. We researched via google and captioned some of the images describing key features and conventional details.

Here is our Look Book!

Made with Padlet

This task was very useful as it has given us a large amount of influential material in one place which describes the look and feel we are trying to convey to a tee. This Look book has shown us the there is a repertoire of elements that these bands use which seem to be a retro or minimalist and simple look for their material. This helps establish the bands brand image and to appeal to the target audience as much as possible.

Our Mission Statement – The Package Brand

Introduction

Moving on from our music video we now have to make our digipak and social media page. We have been researching bands in the same genre and we have been modelling our ideal audience member down to the finest details. We have found common themes and conventions used by other bands and we have formed our mission statement and unique selling point based off of those things.

Reflection

This task was a great insight on how our audience views our brand image and star image. This has helped us understand what our fans want and how we can innovate so we have a unique selling point as well as conventional features. This task has helped me understand our audience better and this has enabled us to write a mission statement which appeals to the audience and is a recognisable brand image. This post has taught me the importance of branding and really selling the star image to the audience, It is vital that our design is coherent or you risk getting lost in translation or not having a majority of audience members see your media due to it not visually appealing to them or they don’t believe it will be something they will be interested in as it doesn’t contain the repertoire of elements which appeal to them so they are not interested.

Music Video Final Draft

Here is our final draft for our music video!

Overall I am very pleased with how our music video came out, we took onboard the criticism given to us by our peers, professionals and teachers and integrated them into the final version of our product. Our video has gone through a lot of changes but I think we have ended up producing a professional and enjoyable video.

Teacher Feedback – Screencastify

Here is our teacher feedback on our second draft of our music video!

Summary

After watching our feedback video we have really been able to think about what we need to improve on and what is good. Following what our teacher said it is clear that we have some very solid performance shots which are synced well and have a well thought out cut time which lands on beat with the music. Our editing pace is chosen well and also reflects the feel of the song. Overall we can confirm that our performance is the best part so far but we need to diversify the showcasing of instruments and not use the same shots. Some suggestions we have taken on board for draft three is the further establishment of the girl in order to make it clearer her importance and link to the other half of the narrative. We where also told that we should re-use the fast pace of edit idea at the end of the video as to bring back original themes and to wrap the video up nicely.

Improvements to take away

  • Make sure the use of effects is relevant (done correctly in the video just not the best places for them)
  • Sharpen effect (Grain) isn’t used anywhere else in the video so no need for it
  • Don’t whip pan to castle if it has no relevance
  • Different shots of the performance, good amount just a wider range if angles
  • Make the stabbing scenes more obvious and fast pace in order to express severity and urgency
  • Far more establishment of the girl and the props surrounding her, mainly at the start, mainly things such as knife, face and doll

Overall I think this feedback has been useful as it will make our video better and has given us more ideas on how we can improve and how our video can be more understandable and easily watched.

Specsavers Feedback

Specsavers Feedback

After the completion of our second draft we got some feedback from the creative department at Specsavers. They watched through our video and gave us some very useful ideas and tips. They had some really interesting things to say and their constructive criticism was very handy at bettering our own work. Another thing they helped us with was utilising premiere to its fullest potential in which they taught us shortcuts and little tips which can make our work flow more efficient. Some of the most useful things taught to us by the supersavers people where how to make new sequences to try new things, useful shortcuts to make working easier and some general tips to make what we have more understandable and more fluent.

What they liked about our video;

  • Our performance is well shot and looks good
  • Our narrative is well planned and cohesive
  • our editing so far is interesting and maintains the pace of the video well

Their advice to improve;

  • More connections between the doll and jack to create a more cohesive link
  • Some more close ups of the doll
  • A wider variety of shots throughout
  • Push the scenes of the doll being stabbed further back to establish the narrative a bit more and to fit the mood of the song
  • Show a few more scenes of the girl to make an even balance

in conclusion it was very useful having the creative team come to help us out and give us advice. it really opened our eyes on what we can improve and how we can utilize the software to its fullest potential. it was nice to get a new perspective and was very useful to have a discussion with somebody who is an expert in the field.
