Video for meaning. The Camera Talks Part II

Below is my video for meaning I have created:

This is a video we created as a group to emphasise the importance of camera movement when recording videos, specifically for a music video. Camera movement is important because it can be used to create a meaning, convey a narrative, and represent a star, etc. Firstly, to create this video we did some research beforehand on YouTube video tutorials on how to shoot different camera movements on an iPhone, below is the one of the videos I gained my knowledge from:

From this video I made a note of some of the camera movements and shots I liked the best and some I already knew:

  • Vortex roll
  • Pan tilt
  • Dolly
  • High/Low angle
  • Close up, Mid shot, Long shot
  • Push past

The video also gave some top tips on how to shoot with your iPhone, these can include:

  • Keep a constant speed
  • Lower your exposure
  • Shoot in 0.5x
  • Don’t shoot vertical
  • Bend knees whilst walking to get a smooth movement
  • Shoulders flat
  • Hold the phone with two hands, one being on the side and the other in the middle

Reflection

For a first time making a short music video clip I think myself and my group appeared to be quite successful but obviously there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some things that worked well was attempting to edit to the beat of the lyrics ‘ABC’, experimenting with some of the effects on Adobe Premiere Pro such as the speed and duration of clips, and doing a range of camera movements to represent the stars and make it more interesting and exciting to watch. However some things that didn’t work as well was some of the awkward movements/actions, a lack of post production/transitions, and not much variety of shots, such as close ups. If we were to complete this task again I believe we should include a variety of shots (close ups, mid shot, long shot) and do some more post production to show we gained a further understanding of the software application.

Focus Forward

By completing this Preliminary Video Task it will help me when creating my music video because I have a wider knowledge on how to shoot videos with different movements which influence what narrative/meaning is conveyed to the audience, and also how to edit these video clips together on Adobe Premiere Pro with a range of effects available to experiment with. Not only this but since we created our music magazines individually, it gave me more of an experience of working in a group and seeing how others work.
