Reflection
We thought of a few different angles and shots that we can use in our music video, we analysed these shots to identify when we may need to use these shots and what they are used for.
The reason why we chose this song is because my partner pitched his idea for this song and I believed that it was a good idea. We both have a clear idea of what the music video will be about and the song fits our idea perfectly and we have a venue perfect for this. The sad tone and the lyrics would work well with a music video of a couple splitting up and becoming more distant, the line “lost in the blue” is repeated a few times in the video and has given us more options for what we can do with this video.
I selected three videos to evaluate in order to perhaps develop a better knowledge of narrative for when I come to create my own music video. For this task, we are exploring the narrative of a music video and how it relates to the lyrics of a song.
The three types of narratives that can be used in a music video to tell a story were Amplified, Illustrative, and Disjunctive. Amplified narratives use the song’s lyrics to encourage viewers to think about the song’s various themes, while Illustrative narratives have lyrics that are clearly related to and simple to follow. Disjunctive is when the lyrics and the video have no relation and the narrative is whatever the audience think it is.
We also learned the four different Narrative structures.
the first thing they did well was implementing a theme into the video with the drinks and the cards game, whilst wearing their suits they gave the audience an idea of the story they’re telling.
They also used a variety of shots in the video, there was a pan of the table and they also used a fade effect whilst the man was in prison, showing that time had passed
There was many cuts in the video, quick cuts giving information and telling the story to the viewers.
The lip syncing looked very low effort and could have been improved with more expression on his face.
They could have used less hand held shots, there was many shaky clips in this video
The singer had no variety of shots, his whole performance was recorded with the angle and distance
I like this video because the story they told was interesting and they made me interested in the character that they have created for the video with the gambling and being in prison makes him mysterious.
The use of the camera was done well in this video, using a variety of angles and conventional music video techniques makes the video more enjoyable =
I have some ideas for my own music video thanks to my analysis of these other music videos. I’ve been able to comprehend the typical practices and narrative structure of music videos thanks to this assignment. All of the music videos use the same camera settings and viewpoints to portray the star as both spectacular and commonplace.
