2nd Shoot Contact Sheets

2nd Shoot Contact Sheets

The shoot went well this time, initially I had a few problems with lighting but quickly sorted it. I experimented with different poses and angles to get a variety of shot types.

The photo that I will use is likely to be 0029.JPG as it conveys important emotions that relate to my article while also not being so over the top that the meaning can’t be interpreted differently.

Chosen Magazine Adverts

Chosen Magazine Adverts

These are the adverts I have picked out for my magazine.

I chose this advert for a music festival specifically because my magazines genre is indie/alternative and the festival features many names that fall into that genre, such as the Arctic Monkeys, Maneskin, Bring me the horizon, etc. As such, my target audience would be most interested in these groups performing at the festival.

I also chose this advert as my target audience are between Gen z and Millennials (~age 20) as such, they have most likely learned to drive and are likely looking for good cars to go travelling with. Furthermore, articles from the New York Times and Credit Acceptance state that cars are most popular amongst Gen z and Millennials. Therefore, it is a fitting ad for my magazine.

3rd Draft of Magazine

3rd Draft of Magazine

Reflection

From the previous draft no changes have taken place apart from additions to the cover lines, I am happy with how this page has turned out and wont make many/any more changes to the layout as I believe it captures the essence of my chosen genre (Indie) very well. The repeated colour scheme of the black and white serves to keep the page organized and keep consistency. I believe that nothing else will need to be added as it would make the page cluttered as there is no more large areas of negative space.

Reflection

The contents page has only received minor changes in this draft concerning recolouring of the images at the bottom of the page, shifting the header of the page over to the left and adding a page number in the top right. No more changes are likely to take place on this page as there is not more to add, the differentiation of the page numbers from the featured articles allows for easier identification of the page it is on, while the images give a visual indication of articles containing people who appear in the images as well as adding some life to the page and breaking up the constant columns of text. The layout of the individual columns helps to stagger the text while the lines provide a good way to break up the titles from the content while the audio symbol to the right of the headings adds some quirk and a reminder of the themes of my magazine as well as a fun graphic that would appeal to my target audience

Reflection

Notable changes have been made to this spread, to fill the negative space that was prevalent in the last draft of this, I have added another quote to further emphasize the themes and tone of my article and I have also added another text box as well as adding a drop cap at the start of the article. A fewer small changes have been made concerning the addition of page numbers and changing the font of the writing in the article to better reflect the tone that I want to convey through this article and spread.

However, there are still improvements that I think I can make to do with the repetitive layout and boring rectangular boxes. To help me with this, I can add more minor images to break up the text and add more colour to the page.

1st Draft of Double Page Spread

1st Draft of Double Page Spread

Reflection

The first draft of my double page spread features only the headline, a graphic and the article. The clunky layout of the article has been broken up with the introduction of a pull quote, however, further improvements could include a drop cap to quickly identify the starting point of my article and the graphic could be replaced by one similar of my own make. Furthermore, the font will change to better reflect the theme of the article and tie in nicely with the image that will occupy the second half of the page.

What’s New

There have been several notable changes to the double page spread. Firstly, I have implemented a background made in photoshop with a picture of my second model blended against a wall. secondly the at the top has been created by myself in Adobe Illustrator, using the original as a basis for the design.

What’s Next

The implementation of the background image on my spread has lead to one noticeable issue with the page, there is a large amount of negative space immediately to the left of the model, this could be remedied by placing another text box on that side to let the article continue over the page and fill the remaining space above with another quote helping to further dramatize the story that occupies most of the spread. The typeface is still unfitting for the current status of the spread, highlighted with the addition of the background and reinforced by the article, a more fitting font would be something reminiscent of handwriting or a more scruffy font.
