My Tour Poster

My Tour Poster

Reflection

This is my tour poster, created from a basic mise-en-scene image that communicates a typical idea of the Pop genre, evidenced through the use of quirky accessories and clothes, bright colours and a main figure on the poster. After taking the photo of the model for the poster, I moved onto editing in photoshop which involved removing the background, done through the use of the magic wand tool and select and mask function. Once I had completed this I placed the image into Indesign, I followed the layout of popular tour posters from the Pop genre seen through the placement of the model in the center of the poster, the subtle fading of the model into the background to give it a seamless look. My main inspiration for this poster was the Sabrina Carpenter 2016 tour, borrowing the background colours and the idea of the name of the star in a typeface reminiscent of hand writing. The main typeface used is a very simplistic sans serif font, taking inspiration from Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift posters. Once I had made the heading for the poster I moved on to the smaller information at the bottom of the poster which included a list of capital cities that will be visited, some persuasive language and where to buy tickets.

From making this poster, I have learned how images using mise-en-scene can communicate certain ideas and themes, how the placement of elements on a poster can heavily affect the intended style, with more uniform posters representing a focused idea and a more chaotic layout leaning towards an anarchic, freeform idea. The use of typefaces can also communicate several different meanings as sans serif connotes modernity and neutrality whereas serif fonts connote tradition, sophistication and formality.

These connotations linked to the formatting and composition of a poster are something I will keep in mind and utilize fully in future pieces to enhance them and make them in exactly the way I envisioned.

The Camera Talks

The Camera Talks

Reflection

These are the nine best photos we took for this project. We used a large array of angles such as high and low angles as well as canted angles and birds eye views. We also thought carefully about how close or far the camera was from the subject and tried to utilize the rule of thirds by putting the subject in the first or last thirds of the frame. We experimented further with using leading lines to draw the viewers eye along the photo in a way we wanted. In some of our photos there was more than one person in the shot, as such, the relationship between the people in frame is as important as the angles and zoom used. In the bottom left photo the relationship between the two people could be an imbalance of power or status as one person is clearly above the other, the poses adopted by the people also conveys information as the person lower down is sat in a more slack position while the person above is sat straight with hands closed infront of themselves.

In the future we will use continue to use these techniques further to enhance our work by leading the eye along specific parts and emphasizing important details.

My Image that uses mise-en-scene to communicate meaning

This is our research on the pop genre. We looked at the conventions within our genre in order to style our images in a similar way using mise-en-scene and the acronym CLAMPS (costume, lighting, acting, makeup and hair, props and setting)

This is our padlet:

To get an idea of the costume we wanted we researched popular uses of colour and types of clothing, this included jackets, coats and shirts. We also analysed some colour palletes that were commonly used on clothing and as a background. Furthermore, we looked at how the stars themselves are presented, we found that there were many close ups and mid shots with a few long shots aswell. After all our research we finally settled on using a rainbow coloured patch coat and a thick coat with fur and colourful flower glasses to bring across the quirky, playful and colourful sense that many pop stars have.

For this photo we had Archie strike a pose at the camera, as during our research we had found that quite a few pop stars do the same when being photographed, we through it was a good way to bring across the sense of an effervescent personality portrayed by many pop stars.

In this photo we had Archie look more serious to create a juxtaposition between the fun and playful energy of his clothing and the seriousness of his expression to subvert the typical convetions of the pop genre, this unorthodox pose allowed us to experiment with the expectations of the genre.

For this final photo we had Archie adopt a playful and active pose, as if he is in the process of doing something, and found that it helped give the photo a sense of life and energy as the idea of movement in the photo is conveyed to the audience.

Through the research done in this task, we have learnt and understood how mise-en-scene is a big part of making and portraying a star in an appropriate way for the genre. By using all the elements of mise-en-scene you can create a star that brings a photo to life but can also push the expected norms of a genre and surprise an audience with a unique approach.
