Music Video Draft 4

Below is myself and my groups draft 4 of our music video:

Feedback from peers and audience:

  • Overall they both understood the concept and the story we wished to convey
  • The mise en scene was clear and well presented
  • The lighting in the performance element was good
  • To improve we should stop using the same clips and try use different ones

Below is feedback given from my teacher:

Targets for improvment:

  • Colour fix some shots of Millie
  • Slow down the shots of Millie shaking her head
  • Make sure to slow down the ending when her hand reaches out towards the camera or to transition the clip to black
  • Make the shots of Min in the bunker less central and scale in more as it is a bit repetitive

Music Video Draft 3

Above is our 3rd draft of our music video to the song ‘Panic Room’ by Au/Ra:

We have made many changes since the second draft, which are the following:

  • Looked over the footage at the start of the video as it looked blurry
  • Made sure we have every time we have used a filter that it is the same one throughout the video
  • We have zoomed in one some shots – for example the bunker and close ups in the underground hospital
  • Experimented with the scale and positioning of particular shots
  • Removed any dark or grainy clips
  • We have edited to the pace of the beat in particular parts of the song
  • We have made sure to edit a clip if we have used it more then once – for example flipping a clip horizontally
  • Added in a new jump cut sequence

Not only do we have to give our own feedback, but we have to collect five youtube comments from two of our peers:

Peer one:

Peer two:

General feedback from both peers:

  • Very good mise en scene
  • Good variety of different shots
  • Make the pace of edit quicker during the chorus as they are fast
  • The music video is slow – paced for the song currently
  • Some shots became a little bit repetitive – experiment with other shots

Below is some feedback given by my dad’s co workers who are interested and experiment with creating music videos using premiere pro. This is very helpful as we are able to gather more feedback, which will allow us to grow as editors and adapt our music video to be even better.

Targets of improvement for our final draft:

  • To ensure we are editing to the pace of the beat in some shots
  • Check that all of the lip syncing clips are lined up with the song
  • Edit Millie to appear more in quicker parts of the song
  • Try to have some short fade ins or fade outs to black
  • Add a title at the start of the song
  • Fade the ending out to black

Teacher Feedback

Screencastify feedback from teacher:

Upon viewing the footage, my teacher gave us the following feedback:

  • Check the footage at the start of the video as it appears to be blurry and grainy
  • Very good jump cuts
  • Make sure you are consistent with the filters throughout the video as some have different filters to others
  • Zoom in some clips in particular the chains clip.
  • Try to experiment with scale and position when it comes to the performance shots, therefore the performer isn’t central all of the time.
  • Remove the dark and grainy clip in the wall
  • Make sure to add pace to the edit on the beats when Millie is banging on the wall.
  • Don’t use the same shot twice, try editing the clip so it appears to be different
  • Only use narrative over the “Welcome to the, welcome to the” lyrics.

Specsavers and Digital Greenhouse Feedback

Earlier in the week the Specsavers creative team came in and overall i found the feedback to be very valuable as we know have a basic understand on more advanced editing tricks and effects.

A tool that particularly stands out to me that the specsavers team showed us was the adjustment layer. When you apply the adjustment layer, it will apply all of the selected effects to any clips below the layer. I found this to be helpful as it will save myself and my group a lot of time during editing, which leaves us with more time to cut down the clips and edit to the beat of the music.  In addition to that, another i found to be very useful was the mask toolwhen you apply the mask tool. The mask tool allows us to merge different clips and move them around the frame creating unique outcomes. The team stated that they liked what they had seen from our video so far due to the fact that at the time we had not edited or cut a lot of our clips yet.

Earlier this week, we had some of the creative team from the Digital Greenhouse come in to answer any questions we had about editing and equally to look our all of our videos. One of the team members stated that she liked our song and enjoyed watching our video. However a piece of advice she gave to our group was to quicken the pace of edit to when the beat drops to mimic the beat. An interesting tool that the team showed us was how to ensure all of our clips are at a perfect brightness and exposure. The team explained in detail how this can be done, which is by: Creating an adjustment layer and ensure all of the shadowing and white on the clip are of a correct level of lighting, contrasting and exposure. I believe this will be beneficial for our group and will once again save us a lot of hassle and time during editing.

Music Video Draft 2 (Includes shoot 2 footage )

Above is our second draft for our music video, this draft includes our narrative footage which we shot recently. When reflection I believe this draft has a few strengths and quite a few improvements that we have to make.

What went well:

  • In certain sections, we have edited well to the beat.
  • We have included a variety of shots including close ups, mid shots and jump cuts, alongside some background  footage to add for extra effect.
  • We have experimented with a wide variety of different filters and effects to ensure they fit within our genre of electro-pop.

Improvements to be made:

  • To add a title at the start of the video which flickers in and out
  • To use more filters and do colour correction to try and improve the darker and more grainier shots.
  • Try to experiment with the pace of edit within the song
  • Ensure consistency with using filters

Shoot 2 Reflection (Narrative)

For our narrative, we conducted to shoots, one in the White Studio at the Guernsey Grammar School tudio and another off site at the German Underground Hospital and both of these shoots highlighted and tested us with a wide variety of different things. Overall I believe that our shoot was a success,  as we were able to capture the energy and story that we wanted to have for narrative. We stuck to our storyboard and focused on what we wanted to film. The storyboard was useful in that it gave us a structuring for the day, meaning that we were able to have a set idea of what we had to have filmed.

However with that being said, some of our shots were slightly blurry which leaves us with less footage to experiment and use in the final product. With that being said, myself and my group have decided that we do not need to re conduct the shoot as the rest of the footage we have is of a good standard. During editing we may have to zoom in on some shots in order to create the extreme close ups required to take our video to a whole other level.

In terms of our location, it raised multiple challenges due to the fact that it was poorly lit throughout the hospital. Yet this did not phase us as we brought lights with us, yet the angling of shots were tricky to do as some brought a shadow with them. Upon reviewing the footage, it appears that some of the shots are a little bit dark or they are also grainy. There are two possible outcomes for this situation which are: To use the effect controls in premiere pro in order to lighten the footage, for example we could use lighting effects and/or lumentri colour effects or we could just not use any of the grainy/dark footage.

Video Narrative Story/Shot sheets

Below is myself and my groups story board. Storyboards are very important as they allow us to have a basic outline of what we need to film in order for our music video to be a success. We have highlighted what type of camera shots will be used and equally what will roughly happen in each shot, giving us more of a creative structure when it comes to filming.

Narrative Development

Below is myself and my groups extended step outline for our music video narrative shoot. The narrative is key within a music video as it creates tension and buzz about the story line, and equally is the main factor that engages the target audience to crave more, this allows for more profit for the artist.

There are three kinds of narrative, which are:

  • Disjunctive – The narrative has little or nothing to do with the song itself
  • Amplified – Themes within the music video narrative link to the themes within the song
  • Illustrative – The songs lyrics and meanings are acted out within the narrative

Myself and my group have chosen to do an amplified narrative and the planning sheet below will be helpful in future making sure we have everything we require to ensure our narrative but most importantly our music video has a positive outcome after production stages.
