I am a media prosumer

This is my media collage to show what different platforms of media I consume, and for what purpose I consume them for. I watch a lot of Netflix series, and movies made by Marvel and DC comics.  This collage shows what kind media I consume for a certain purpose, personally I use loads of different media platforms, each dependant for what I want to do.

Blumler and Katz came up with a theory of how different people can use the same media but for different purposes.  There are four main purposes that they came up with: Entertainment, Information, Social Interaction and Personal Identity.

For entertainment purposes, I watch TV series’ on Netflix, or I watch movies on Sky Cinema. I support Arsenal Football Club and I watch their premier league and European football matches every week. Because I am a huge Arsenal fan I often follow Arsenal Fan TV (AFTV) on YouTube,  Instagram and TikTok. I gain a lot of information from AFTV such as transfer deals/rumors, injury updates and the general status of the club.  Supporting a football team gives me a lot of social interaction with people who support other clubs and have different opinions to me.

For entertainment and Social Interaction purposes I either watch Only Fools and Horses with my family, or I watch Niko Omilana or The Sidemen on YouTube. When I watch these creators on YouTube I talk to my friends about them afterwards. Interacting with other people about these things gives me information on other’s personal identity, they may share my opinion on a certain media artist or it may not. It opens my world to so many new people, because often I’m recommended to follow a certain page, or watch a certain creator’s content.

This knowledge will help when designing my products because it gives me the idea of what makes something entertaining or socially interactive.  By analysing what entertains me, and what interests me, I will be able to apply those features onto a product of my own.
